JFK Runway Repair May Increase Spring Air Travel Delays

Travelers using the U.S.'s air travel system, already groaning from more than a decade of inadequate maintenance, will have to bear with another hardship for four months as the longest runway at New York's JFK International Airport undergoes repairs, The Wall Street Journal reported (subscription required.)

One-third of JFK's traffic and half of its departures with be diverted to three smaller runways, resulting in longer lines at take-offs/landings, the AP reported.

How does work on JFK's Bay Runway affect travelers in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, etc.? As veteran air travelers know, the U.S.'s air travel system is so efficient and interdependent that travel delays at one hub frequently ripple throughout the system.

JetBlue finally replaces Neeleman as CEO

In a long overdue move, JetBlue Airways Corp. (NASDAQ: JDBLU) replaced founder David Neeleman as chief executive officer. Shares of the discount airline soared 6 percent.

Neeleman, who will remain as chairman, was replaced by chief operating officer Dave Barger, who will remain president. Barger certainly has his work cut for him.

As I've argued before, JetBlue's brand has been damaged by service snafus that left thousands of passengers stranded on airport runways for hours on planes that didn't take off.

In response to the negative press, Neeleman established the "Customer Bill of Rights" which promises vouchers for future flights for passengers that find themselves in the same situation. I'm not sure if people that have experienced poor service on an airline would want to fly that same airline again even with a discount.

When it comes to customer service, talk is cheap and actions speak louder than words. If Barger can convince the flying public that the "Bill of Rights" really means something, then JetBlue will be able to expand into other markets and be a serious competitor to Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV).

But that's a big if.

JetBlue can't catch a break

JetBlue Airways Corp. (NASDAQ:JBLU) canceled 68 flights scheduled to come in and out of its hub at John F. Kennedy International Airport today because forecasts were calling for the region to get hit with as much as 7 inches of snow.

The storm may not be as bad as originally thought. Forecasts this morning on Weather.com are calling for 1 to 3 inches of snow tonight. Did JetBlue overreact? Maybe. But the low-cost airline has good reason to be cautious.

JetBlue's performance is under an electron microscope following the disastrous performance on Valentine's Day in which people were trapped on board planes for hours that never took off. Chief Executive David Neeleman has apologized more than Bill Clinton, Michael Richards and Mel Gibson combined and has offered what he calls a Passenger Bill of Rights that gives vouchers if their flights are delayed.

All hope isn't lost for JetBlue. Judging from the huge response to my previous post, the airline has plenty of fans. The public is fickle though.

People aren't stupid. They understand that airlines don't always run on time and that luggage gets lost. JetBlue will lose the goodwill it enjoys if the public starts to think that it doesn't know what it's doing.
