Top Picks for 2010: Becton, Dickinson (BDX)

This post is part of a special report, Top Picks for 2010, the 27th annual survey in which TheStockAdvisors.com asks the nation's leading advisors for their single favorite stock for the new year. See all 80 stocks listed here.

"Medical equipment giant Becton, Dickinson and Co. (BDX) is our top investment pick for the coming year," says Jonas Elmerraji. Here's his review from the advisor's Rhino Stock Report.

"If anything's certain for 2010, it'll be that nothing's certain as far as stocks are concerned. With a substantial rally that's pushed the valuations of major indexes like the S&P 500 and Dow more than 60% higher since mid-March lows, it's inevitable for investor anxiety to spill over into the New Year.

NRG Energy (NRG): 'Wholesale' power play

"The uncertain market has changed our risk appetite and shifted our focus to stocks deemed safe enough for even the most conservative investors," says Jonas Elmerraji.

The editor of The Rhino Stock Report suggests, "Among them are regulated utilities, including our latest recommendation -- NRG Energy (NRG), which is involved in wholesale power generation.

"The peanut butter and jelly sandwich has been a staple of our diets here in the U.S. for a long time now. In fact, one survey estimated that the average American eats 1,500 PB&J sandwiches before graduating high school.

Food for thought: Best buys in food & beverage

In a difficult economic environment, it is often wise for investors to consider stocks in more defensive and relatively recession-resistant sectors. And one such area is food and beverage stocks.

As the long-standing market maxim goes, consumers can pull back on spending for vacations, remodeling, and new cars, but they still need to eat and drink.

In that light, I turned to nine leading newsletter advisors who serve up their current favorite ideas in the food and beverage sector:

On tap with Molson Coors (TAP)

"Molson Coors Brewing Company (NYSE:TAP) is a way to drink your way to profits," jests Jonas Elmerraji. In The Rhino Report, the advisor suggests that the brewer is well-positioned to benefit as consumer scale down from more expensive beer brands. Here's his review.

"The stock price of TAP has slid in price in recent months, largely the result of underwhelming Wall Street in its latest earnings release a month ago.

"The company posted earnings of $96.8 million, or $0.44 per share, missing analyst estimates by 30 cents per share. But digging deeper reveals a quarter that wasn't quite as bad as Wall Street made it out to be.
