Closing Bell: Stocks moving around government and year-end (MVL, DIS, SLGN, AAPL, OSIS, KFRC, FNM, CIEN)

Today was down to the wire, where you didn't know if we'd see a positive or negative close until right before 4:00 PM. A very positive regional economic report from Chicago was trumped by what some feared was a NASDAQ bomb threat because of sloppy reporting in and around New York City, and because of media outlets taking advantage of post-failed-terror hype. Oil inventories were mixed but prices still rose on the day.

Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 10,548.51 +3.10 (0.03%)
S&P 500 1,126.42 +0.23 (0.02%)
Nasdaq 2,291.28 +2.88 (0.13%)

Analyst calls: AAI, AMR, CAL, POT, AIG, DHI, PHM, GS, JPM, LOW ...

Analyst upgrades:
  • UBS believes US airlines estimates are too low and will move higher. The firm upgraded AirTran (NYSE: AAI), AMR Corp (NYSE: AMR), Continental (NYSE: CAL), Delta (NYSE: DAL) and Northwest (NYSE: NWA) to Buy from Neutral and JetBlue (NASDAQ: JBLU) to Neutral from Sell.
  • JMP Securities upgraded DealerTrack (NASDAQ: TRAK) to OUtperform from Market Perform as they believe 2H08 guidance represents a floor and that 2009 estimates are achievable, among other reasons.
  • Potash (NYSE: POT) and Mosaic (NYSE: MOS) were raised to Buy from Hold at Soleil.
  • Argus upgraded Seagate (NYSE: STX) to Buy from Hold on Friday.
Analyst downgrades:
  • Jefferies downgraded Citrix Systems (NASDAQ: CTXS) to Underperform from Hold as they do not see a catalyst for the company to grow into 2009 consensus estimates. The firm lowered their target price to $25 from $32.
  • Citigroup said following Lehman's (NYSE: LEH) bankruptcy, they expect a distressed-sale of American International's (NYSE: AIG) MBS portfolio, resulting in the worst quarter yet for the company. Shares were cut to Hold from Buy.
  • D.R. Horton (NYSE: DHI) was downgraded to Sell from Hold and Pulte Homes (NYSE: PHM) was downgraded to Hold from Sell at Citigroup.
  • Merrill downgraded Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) to Neutral from Buy and JP Morgan (NYSE: JPM) to Underperform from Neutral.

Analyst downgrades 9-7-07: BSC, OCR, KFRC and WYE

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Bear Stearns, Omnicare, Kforce.com and Wyeth were today's noteworthy downgrades:
  • Bear Stearns Companies (NYSE: BSC) was downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Banc of America to reflect weaker fixed income trends, challenges in prime-brokerage and asset management, and no positive catalysts. They feel the stock is "dead money" for the next 6-12 months.
  • Morgan Stanley lowered Omnicare Inc's (NYSE: OCR) rating to Underweight from Equal Weight citing the Department of Justice's inquiry into the company's business practices.
  • Suntrust believes Street expectations for Kforce Inc (NASDAQ: KFRC) may be too optimistic given a potential slowdown in finance and accounting temporary staffing volumes and downgraded shares to Neutral from Buy.
  • Wyeth (NYSE: WYE) was downgraded to Hold from Buy at Citigroup to reflect a more negative industry outlook, recent pipeline setbacks and the negative court ruling related to the Protonix litigation.
