Now the shares are attracting even more attention, thanks to an industry report suggesting that average summer airfares could rise 25% on a year-over-year basis.

As a result, LCC's call options have been drawing a crowd. On Tuesday alone, call volume surged to more than double the norm, with 7,345 contracts crossing the tape. During the course of the session, traders on the International Securities Exchange (ISE) alone bought to open 4,129 calls on the airline, compared to just one put.

Continue reading Call Buying Climbs on US Airways Group

Call Buying Climbs on US Airways Group originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 14 Apr 2010 12:20:00 EST. Spirit Airlines, out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is going to start charging a fee on August 1, 2010. The only group that is not chagrined are probably the nudists that travel light when vacationing.

Given all the fees the airlines are tacking on they might as well evolve into banks. Actually I think this is another instance where business has learned a bad lesson from government agencies. The government may require legislative action to raise taxes but bureaucrats the world over seem to be able to add new fees at will.
Continue reading Spirit Airlines Adds Carry-on Fee -- Nudist's Delight?

Spirit Airlines Adds Carry-on Fee -- Nudist's Delight? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 09 Apr 2010 17:00:00 EST. According to the report, this is the third time in the past decade that the two have talked merger. Will this time be different?

I honestly believe that this time will be different, in large part because of the economy. As The Times points out, Southwest Airlines (LUV) was the only low-cost air carrier to turn a profit last year. A merger between UAUA and LCC could turn the companies a profit faster than as separate entities.
Continue reading United Airlines and US Airways Discussing Possible Merger

United Airlines and US Airways Discussing Possible Merger originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 08 Apr 2010 08:00:00 EST. Excluding items such as hedging write-downs, US Airways' loss was only 20 cents per share, down from $1.94 in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Meanwhile, revenue dwindled 4.9% to $2.6 billion. Passenger revenue per available seat mile dropped 7%, while load factor backpedaled from 80% to 79.8%. US Airways was able to boost its bottom line even as top-line results suffered, thanks to a 17% decline in operating expenses (mostly due to more favorable fuel costs).

Continue reading US Airways Rises After 4Q Report, but Still Faces Challenges

US Airways Rises After 4Q Report, but Still Faces Challenges originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 28 Jan 2010 12:30:00 EST. Richard Anderson, CEO of Delta Airlines (DAL), says that the airline industry could consolidate further -- not exactly a shock in an industry that is known for universal financial suffering. He notes, "If a transaction were to occur, economics should prevail."

The only concern, of course, is whether the Obama administration would sign off on any future deals. They've been able to post better numbers as a result, and in the current travel slump, they've outperformed the larger carriers. Well, they've also picked up a considerable amount of market share.

According to a report by USA Today, low cost carriers now have 30% of the market in the United States. Price-sensitive consumers are turning to cheaper alternatives, even if it means (for fliers with elite status) giving up the perks they've earned through years of customer loyalty.

Jamie Baker of JPMorgan said in a July 20, 2009 report that these companies couldn't do anything to prevent a cash crisis. They only savior available to them would have to be an outside investor. To call the position grim would be optimistic. Unfortunately, it couldn't have come at a worse time.

As Baker was walking the bear into the airline industry, United was starting to celebrate its change in direction. The carrier has improved its on-time rate, according to a USA Today report, and its operations are coming around. Despite the fact that the airline industry has been brutalized by the global recession, the airline has made some progress. Through August, the company's share price doubled, and its ascent has continued in September. So, the company is locked in an ongoing struggle to manage its identity, cope with its past and shape how the world sees it today.

The operational "makeover" has resulted in a reduction of its fleet from 601 jets in 2000 to 386 as of the summer of 2009. In terms of passenger traffic, it's in the #4 spot in the United States - trailing Delta (NYSE: DAL), Southwest (NYSE: LUV) and American. With Q2 revenues off 25.2% year-over-year, however, drastic measures are still necessary.

Seven of the country's nine largest carriers saw traffic drop, with only Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) and JetBlue Airways Corp (NASDAQ: JBLU) bucking the trend. The continued upward climb of unemployment, tighter corporate budgets and sluggish demand for leisure travel has resulted in fewer passengers in seats.

JetBue was the only carrier not to report a drop in available seat miles (ASMs), the primary measure of airline productivity. Load factors, however, which indicate how full a plane is, tended to be higher, largely a result of flights that have been cut in an effort to reduce costs.

Continue reading August a sluggish month for U.S. airlines

August a sluggish month for U.S. airlines originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sun, 06 Sep 2009 15:10:00 EST. While I wouldn't expect these companies to become top performers anytime soon, it looks like the best revenue stream is the one nobody's been talking about: change and cancellation fees.

These penalties, which can reach up to $150, bring $2 billion in revenue into the industry annually. According to the Department of Transportation, they were good for $527.6 million in the first quarter -- in the United States alone. This is 3.2% of U.S. airline revenue.

American Airlines parent AMR (NYSE: AMR) raked in $116 million in revenue from these penalties in the first quarter of 2009 -- compared to $108 million from the more highly publicized extra bag fees. For JetBlue (NASDAQ: JBLU), the numbers are smaller (JetBlue, of course, isn't as big as AMR) but no less compelling. By pumping its change and cancellation fee from $100 to $150, the airline scored $32.2 million in Q1 2009, up from $25 million in Q1 2008.

Continue reading Could cancellation fees save the airlines?

Could cancellation fees save the airlines? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 30 Jul 2009 11:40:00 EST. The airline had hoped not to cut this many positions, anticipating that resignations and departures would do the hard work for it. But employee attrition fell sharply from last year - probably because this isn't exactly the best market for job hunting. Unfortunately, the same reasons that cause employees to stay force US Airways to cut them loose.

At nine airports, US Airways is moving to outside contractors for ramp work. The Las Vegas US Airways Club will close and its staff cut. Also, the walk-up ticket counter at the airline's Tempe, AZ headquarters is on the chopping block.

Continue reading US Airways to slash 600 jobs, asks 400 flight attendants to take furlough

US Airways to slash 600 jobs, asks 400 flight attendants to take furlough originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 15 Jul 2009 10:30:00 EST. Miserable conditions for the airline industry have led the low-cost carrier to turn to financial markets for the infusion that operations can't seem to deliver.

The debt, which is convertible into common stock, will be sold in two $75 million series. And the 20 million common shares would raise another $101 million (at yesterday's closing price of $5.03). If there's enough demand for the debt and equity securities, JetBlue may sell another 3 million shares of common stock and another $11.25 million in debt.
