(<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/cobalt-international-energy-l-p/cie/nys">CIE</a>). Traders plowed into 1,553 new <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Call%20Option">call option</a> contracts -- 4.65 times the average volume -- on the stock on Monday. And we know that traders were eager to get into this trade because 98% of the trades came in on the ask price.</p>
<p>Cobalt just bounced up off of support at $7. The stock closed Monday at $8.25, down 1.32% during the past month.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/30/option-traders-buy-cobalt-international-energy-calls-and-mirant/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Option Traders Buy Cobalt International Energy Calls and Mirant Puts</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/30/option-traders-buy-cobalt-international-energy-calls-and-mirant/">Option Traders Buy Cobalt International Energy Calls and Mirant Puts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 30 Aug 2010 18:20:00 EST. This seemed impossible just last week. Despite some choppy retail sales, stocks were up triple-digits in the DJIA in the final minutes before the close and another day not in the red was assured. A slight drop in jobless claims helped as well, even if the pre-holiday week is generally viewed as a wash by Wall Street. <br />

The retail company <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/17/business/17limited.html?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss" target="_blank">unloaded</a> the remaining 25% of the eponymous women's apparel retailer to private equity firm Sun Capital Partners, which already held 75% of the company. The final chunk of the 220-store chain sold for roughly $32 million. Sun bought its initial 75% stake in the name in August 2007. <br />
<br />
Sun Capital's influence has been good for The Limited, which posted positive pretax annual earnings for the first time since 1993 (ironically, that's the year when I spent 90% of my allowance on their clothes. Honeycomb sweaters, anyone?).<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/18/limited-brands-sells-the-limited/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Limited Brands Sells The Limited</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/18/limited-brands-sells-the-limited/">Limited Brands Sells The Limited</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 18 Jun 2010 09:30:00 EST. The company posted earnings of 25 cents per share, beating the 19 cents per share that analysts had been expecting to see. Others are convinced there's nowhere to go but up. Both views are oversimplified market predictions, considering the complicated economic environment.</p>
<p>A closer look at the latest stock market news proves that while things aren't all coming up roses on Wall Street, there are plenty of reasons to be cautiously optimistic the bull market will continue. Here are three of the latest reasons we learned about in the past few days: strong retail sales, strength in one of the worst housing markets and significant increases in corporate spending and dividends.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/09/three-big-reasons-to-keep-being-bullish/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Three Big Reasons to Keep Being Bullish</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/09/three-big-reasons-to-keep-being-bullish/">Three Big Reasons to Keep Being Bullish</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 09 Apr 2010 12:40:00 EST. Excluding one-time items, LTD earned $1.01 per share on revenue of $3.06 billion. Analysts had forecast a profit of 98 cents per share on revenue of $3.05 billion. Since the rest of the market is in the dumps today, the advances made by LTD stock are even more significant as they have to overcome that downward push. If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on LTD.<br />
<br />
LTD opened this morning at $22.03. So far today the stock has hit a low of $21.90 and a high of $22.53. As of 1:00, LTD is trading at $22.07 up 53 cents (2.5%). The chart for LTD looks neutral and <a href="http://www.iotogo.com/spoutlookonline" target="_blank">S&amp;P</a> gives LTD a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold ranking.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/25/limited-brands-q4-earnings-beat-estimates/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Limited Brands Q4 Earnings Beat Estimates</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/25/limited-brands-q4-earnings-beat-estimates/">Limited Brands Q4 Earnings Beat Estimates</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 25 Feb 2010 13:30:00 EST. JCPenney (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/penney-j-c-co-inc-holding-co/jcp/nys">JCP</a>), on the other hand, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/19/jcpenney-shares-soar-on-earnings-beat/">easily topped earnings expectations</a>.</p>
<p>Many more shopping mall and strip mall stalwarts are scheduled to report results this week. The expectations of analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are high for the likes of Sears Holdings Corp. And this coming Valentine's Day may be extra sweet since it falls on a Sunday, making it a great excuse for a romantic night out. Shoppers looking for deals the week before Christmas -- and making up for the day lost to <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/04/day-after-christmas-tops-all-but-black-friday-for-retailers/" target="_blank">stormy weather on the East Coast</a> -- spent aggressively, <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34745638/ns/business-retail/" target="_blank">sparing the retail sector a dismal 2008-like performance</a>. </p>
<p>The healthy conclusion to the holiday season led to a positive change from November and made December one of only three months (including September and October) in which retail sales increased year-over-year.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/08/retailers-post-solid-december-but-consumer-still-strapped/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Retailers Post Solid December, but Consumer Still Strapped</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/08/retailers-post-solid-december-but-consumer-still-strapped/">Retailers Post Solid December, but Consumer Still Strapped</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 08 Jan 2010 10:20:00 EST. A report by outplacement consulting company <a href="http://www.challengergray.com" target="_blank">Challenger, Gray &amp; Christmas</a>, reavealed to BloggingStocks, shows that retail sector payrolls grew to 321,300 in November, an improvement from the previous month's 233,700. This follows 54,200 retail hires in October, bringing the total number of seasonal retail employees up to 375,500. Already, that comes close to the 384,300 hired from October through December in 2008. The analysis is based on data supplied by the <a href="http://www.dol.gov" target="_blank">Department of Labor</a>.<br /><br />High expectations for the holiday season likely contributed to the up-tick in hiring. The estimated 0.5% growth from Black Friday 2008 to <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/BlackFriday/">Black Friday</a> 2009 was a disappointment, and <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/04/retail-sales-fell-in-november-surprising-analysts/" target="_blank">November sales were off 0.3%, surprising analysts</a>, who expected the trend to go in the other direction. Costco (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/costco-wholesale-corporation/cost/nas" target="_blank">COST</a>) and Limited Brands (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/limited-brands-inc/ltd/nys" target="_blank">LTD</a>) came out ahead, but most retailers, including Target (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/limited-brands-inc/ltd/nys" target="_blank">TGT</a>) and Macy's (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/macy-s-inc/m/nys" target="_blank">M</a>) struggled. Saks (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/saks-incorporated/sks/nys" target="_blank">SKS</a>) is also suffering from an anemic luxury goods market.<br /><br /><br /></p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/09/retail-hiring-up-from-last-year-but-still-well-below-average/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Retail hiring up from last year, but still well below average</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/09/retail-hiring-up-from-last-year-but-still-well-below-average/">Retail hiring up from last year, but still well below average</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 09 Dec 2009 08:00:00 EST. As if the drop weren't bad enough, it's a decline on top of last year's November retail freefall, which means we went from bad to worse. </p>
<p>Meanwhile, analysts had expected a strong increase. U.S. government data on retail sales isn't due to be reported until December 11, 2009, and it's expected to be a better indicator of the sector's performance. The data released Thursday doesn't include sales by Wal-Mart (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys" target="_blank">WMT</a>).<br /><br /><br /></p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/04/retail-sales-fell-in-november-surprising-analysts/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Retail sales fell in November, surprising analysts</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/04/retail-sales-fell-in-november-surprising-analysts/">Retail sales fell in November, surprising analysts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 04 Dec 2009 10:15:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/InternationalCouncilofShoppingCenters/">International Council of Shopping Centers</a> and <a target="_blank" href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-goldman-sachs-group-inc/gs/nys">Goldman Sachs</a> (NYSE: <a target="_blank" href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-goldman-sachs-group-inc/gs/nys">GS</a>) found that retail sales inched 0.1% higher last month. It doesn't seem like much, but a gain when you anticipate a fall is good news magnified. But, it came at the expense of great deals and other tools to entice somewhat hesitant customers into stores. </p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kss/NYS">Kohl's</a> (NYSE: <a target="_blank" href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kss/NYS">KSS</a>) and <a target="_blank" href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/limited-brands-inc/ltd/nys">Limited Brands</a> (NYSE: <a target="_blank" href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/limited-brands-inc/ltd/nys">LTD</a>) reported sales increases in September for stores open more than a year. <a target="_blank" href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/penney-j-c-co-inc-holding-co/jcp/nys">J.C. Penney</a> (NYSE: <a target="_blank" href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/penney-j-c-co-inc-holding-co/jcp/nys">JCP</a>), <a target="_blank" href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/macy-s-inc/m/nys">Macy's</a> (NYSE: <a target="_blank" href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/macy-s-inc/m/nys">M</a>) and <a target="_blank" href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/tgt/NYS">Target</a> (NYSE: <a target="_blank" href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/tgt/NYS">TGT</a>) posted declines, but they were better than expected. Delayed school openings thanks to a late Labor Day helped push to September sales that might have occurred in August otherwise. </p>
<p>Of course, all eyes are on the coming holiday season. The <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/NationalRetailFederation/">National Retail Federation</a> forecasts U.S. <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/consumerspending/">consumer spending</a> of $437.6 billion - up only slightly from $433.7 billion four years ago. So, we still have a lot of ground to make up before we can celebrate a recovery. As long as the situation is staying steady, though, we'll at least have a solid starting point. </p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/09/consumers-wallets-prying-open/">Consumers' wallets peeking open</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 09 Oct 2009 16:20:00 EST.
