The S&P 500 has now literally doubled since the March-2009 lows. CEOs are becoming more confident again in a survey today.
The natural gas market is about to become an export market. The U.S. has abundant natural gas and now two companies plan to take advantage of the opportunity, as reported in the Wall Street Journal (subscription required).

The company has an import terminal and it plans to add the equipment that will allow it to export as well.

Continue reading U.S. Firms to Export Natural Gas

U.S. Firms to Export Natural Gas originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 04 Feb 2011 11:30:00 EST. Markets opened lower this morning before turning around slowly to post a slight gain in late afternoon trading. Continuing worries on Ireland's banks and US and Chinese monetary policy pointed the market toward a small loss for the week.

Traders appear to have overcome worries about the effect of China's latest monetary tightening moves, choosing to believe that Chinese growth would remain strong. Discussions in Europe related to Ireland's banks and more debate about the possible inflationary effect of QE2, which also served to cool the market.

Here are the numbers for late afternoon trading today:

Dow Jones 11,181.34 +0.11 (0.00%)
S&P 500 1,197.17 +0.48 (0.04%)
Nasdaq 2,514.57 +0.17 (0.01%)

1. Reserves deplete faster than oil (in general).

2. Oil/natural gas ratio: the price of oil divided by the price of natural gas is at an all-time high (or close). This ratio stands at 17 (historically it has been at about an 8 or so). Natural gas prices will go, oil will decline, or both.

3. At $4 a gallon, it is uneconomical to develop and look for new oil reserves.

4. No OPEC competition.

It is a smaller energy company that also participates in oil and gas exploration and development in the Gulf of Mexico.

Should oil continue on its current trajectory, demand for natural gas will increase at a greater rate. LNG suffered from increased competition from larger players that entered the space when oil prices were rocketing higher and a large amount of debt on its balance sheet. The credit crisis pushed shares to the brink, but retirement of certain notes in exchange for common stock reduces LNG's interest expense and provides liquidity for the foreseeable future.

Continue reading Oil stock #3: Cheniere Energy (LNG)

Oil stock #3: Cheniere Energy (LNG) originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sun, 24 May 2009 11:00:00 EST.
Crude traders are betting that a stronger economy will result in increased demand for oil. At the same time, OPEC is holding firm on production cuts that reduces supply.

And let's not forget about the summer driving season which officially kicks off this Memorial Day weekend.

All of these factors mean investors can confidently operate under the assumption that oil prices will go up in the foreseeable future.

Continue reading 3 oil stocks for slick profits

3 oil stocks for slick profits originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sat, 23 May 2009 09:00:00 EST. Here, the advisor looks at Teekay LNG Partners (NYSE: TGP).

"Some shippers take their chances in the spot market; these should be avoided. Teekay, however, offers a high yield and lower earnings volatility due to its lower-than-average exposure to the spot market.

"Teekay is well exposed to the growing market for liquidified natural gas (LNG). The growth profile of the LNG market is compelling. The vast majority of the world's natural gas reserves are stranded in Eurasia and the Middle East, while consumption is greatest in the U.S., Far East and Europe.

"Imports of LNG to the U.S., for example, are expected to increase by more than 400%, by some estimates, between now and 2012. Clearly, there is wide-eyed potential growth in the LNG market.

"There are also high barriers to entry in its transportation since it requires huge investments in loading and reliquification terminals for highly specialized ships. Given the support of its parent company -- Teekay Corp. -- Teekay LNG Partners is a force far larger than its relatively small size would have your believe at first blush.

"The company's growth is virtually assured for years to come due to the imbalance in the geographic distribution of reserves and consumers of natural gas. Teekay LNG Partners, yielding 7.7%, is a publicly-traded master limited partnership, which means you should look into the peculiarities of tax treatment of distributions."

If regulators approve the terminal, it would cost more than $1 billion to build, but it would be able to supply about 1.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day, enough to meet the needs of more than 5 million residential consumers. This would ease the supply of natural gas to New Jersey and neighboring New York.

Since the gas is cooled to liquid form, it can be shipped through tankers, rather than pipelines, thus allowing nations the use of more gas than is nearby. Exxon expects demand for gas in North America to rise above the ability of drillers to supply it. It also expects worldwide demand for LNG to more than triple to 500 million metric tons a year in 2030, 20% of which will be consumed in North America, meaning America would have to rely on imported gas. Hence the need for the terminal.
Continue reading Exxon Mobil plans liquefied natural gas terminal off New Jersey

Exxon Mobil plans liquefied natural gas terminal off New Jersey originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 12 Dec 2007 13:25:00 EST.
