Top toymaker Mattel Inc. (NYSE: MAT) may initiate another recall after again finding excessive lead levels in some toys' paint. Mattel recalled some 1 million Fisher Price toys earlier this month.

Cell-phone maker Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) is replacing 46 million batteries made by Matsushita Electric Industrial (NYSE: MC), saying the batteries are subject to overheating.

A consumer satisfaction survey out of the University of Michigan showed Yahoo! (NASDAQ: YHOO) rated higher than Google (NASDAQ: GOOG).

In the wake of a series of courtroom setbacks vs. rival Broadcom (NASDAQ: BRCM), chipmaker Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM)'s head counsel has resigned.

General Motors
(NYSE: GM) and Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM) both lowered their sales forecasts for the auto industry Wednesday, saying rising fuel prices and credit market weakness had softened the automobile market.

Blockbuster Inc. (NYSE: BBI) has acquired Movielink LLC, an online film download service owned and operated by six major movie studios.

Campbell Soup Co. (NYSE: CPB) said Thursday that it may sell off its money-making Godiva Chocalatier business because the decadent sweets don't fit with its focus on healther foods.

Before the bell: Friday's plunge points to slight rebound


Companies reporting earnings Monday include Conseco (NYSE: CNO), EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) and Spectra Energy (NYSE: SE).

Stocks slipped in Europe and Japan, with the Nikkei falling 0.4 percent to 16,914.46. The dollar declined against the euro and fell 0.2% against the yen.

Traders await Tuesday's rate decision from the Federal Reserve. The Fed is expected to maintain rates at 5.25%.

Bear Stearns Cos.
(NYSE: BSR) has ousted co-president Warren Spector, holding him responsible for two slumping hedge funds that touched off the recent decline in credit markets.

Broker UBS upgraded Merrill Lynch (NYSE: MER) to "buy."

Pharmaceutical firm Merck (NYSE: MRK) is feeling pressure as a British probe into an outbreak of foot and mouth disease has led authorities to seal off a lab co-owned by Merck and French counterpart Sanofi-Aventis SA.
