The week in preview: Another earnings season begins: Alcoa, PepsiCo, Monsanto ...

Alcoa Inc. (NYSE: AA) kicks off another earnings season this week, and analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are looking for another net loss for the third quarter. Can we take that as a sign of things to come, or as a bellwether for the economy? Well, barring a big downside surprise, this will be the third narrower quarterly loss for Alcoa. But while Alcoa beat estimates in July, it missed them in April. Alcoa's shares, on the other hand, are up 145.6% since the March low, which is well more than twice as much either the Dow or the S&P 500.

During its third quarter, New York-based Alcoa continued restructuring efforts, remained a part of the DJIA Sustainability Index, and declared a quarterly dividend. It is expected to report a net loss of $0.12 per share for the three months that ended in September. That compares to a profit of $0.37 in the same period of last year. Third-quarter revenue is forecast to have fallen 38.3% to $4.5 billion. Analysts so far expect to see a profit in the fourth quarter, but not for the full year. Alcoa has missed earnings expectations in three of the past four quarters. The long-term EPS growth forecast is 20.0%, again much better than the S&P 500. The First Call consensus recommendation is to hold AA; CNBC concurs that now is not the time to buy. At $12.82, shares are 30.0% higher than three months ago, but 33.4% lower than a year ago.

Timeshare growth spurt ends severely

Timeshares, that wonderful relic from the 1970s, are about as popular as disco and excessive chest hair this year. Thanks to the recession, timeshare sales are forecasted to suffer their worst fall since this vacation option came on the scene more than 30 years ago. The plunge could reach 30 percent, according to Howard Nusbaum, president and CEO of the American Resort Development Association, a trade group, and the next year and a half could be tough, as well.

In the United States, timeshare sales fell 8.5% last year to $9.7 billion. They reached their peak the year before, when sales hit $10.6 billion, according to a study by Ernst & Young. The 2008 decline was the first sustained by the industry since it started keeping score in 1975.

  • Goldman upgraded Fortune Brands (NYSE: FO) to Buy from Neutral citing potential EPS improvement driven by the Home division. Fortune Brands price target to $49 from $45. Note that the firm downgraded General Mills to Neutral from Buy.

Marriott hopes to save its bacon by saving its bacon

MariottIn an over-the-top example of watching the pennies so the dollars add up, Marriott Intl. (NYSE: MAR) has found an extra $2 million a year in its bacon. Fortune Magazine reports that the chain has abandoned uniform six-inch strip of crispy goodness in favor of strips of varying lengths. The lower price of the irregular sizes should bolster the bottom line, it hopes without harming the perception of value of its customers.

The week in preview: Coke versus Pepsi

It's about that time again: Pepsi vs. Coke. No, not another taste test or another Battle of the Brands. It's time for the next quarterly results from these two soft drink titans.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters anticipate that PepsiCo Inc. (NYSE: PEP), global beverage and snack food giant, will report fourth-quarter earnings this week that are 9.1% higher that a year ago, or $0.88 per share. Revenue is expected to total $12.8 billion, which is 3.9% higher than last year. For the full year, the profit is expected to be $3.67 per share on revenue of $43.4 billion, up from $3.38 per share on $39.5 billion in 2007. PepsiCo's earnings met or beat estimates in four of the past five quarters, but missed by only two cents per share in the third quarter. The consensus recommendation of analysts remains to buy PEP. The share price fell to a 52-week low in January and is now 24.4% lower than it was a year ago. During the fourth quarter, PepsiCo declared a $0.42 per share quarterly dividend, agreed to acquire a Spitz International, and announced investments in China and Mexico.

Marriott Q3 profit declines, Constellation Brands posts a Q2 loss

On Thursday, Marriott International Inc. (NYSE: MAR) said its third-quarter earnings fell 28% and warned of deteriorating conditions for 2009, and Constellation Brands Inc. (NYSE: STZ) posted a loss of nearly $23 million in its fiscal second quarter due to charges to reduce operations in Australia.

For the quarter ended Sept. 5, Marriott's net income slipped to $94 million, or 26 cents per share. Excluding a $29 million tax planning charge, adjusted income from continuing operations totaled $123 million, or 34 cents per share. Revenue rose 1% to $2.96 billion.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters had expected earnings of 32 cents per share on revenue of $2.95 billion.

Marriott said its revenue per available room declined in North America, and timeshare sales evaporated due to the tight credit market and cutbacks in business and consumer spending.

The Bethesda, Md.-based hotel company lowered its full-year 2008 earnings guidance to $1.62 to $1.68 per share, from its previous guidance of $1.77 to $1.88 per share. Analysts had forecast 2008 profit of $1.78 per share. For 2009, Marriott said the outlook is uncertain, but it expects the environment to remain challenging. Marriott said it will focus on cash flow by trimming investments and share repurchases.

Marriott shares fell $1.34, or 5.3%, to $23.74 Thursday. The stock price is down 30.5% year to date.

Marriott (MAR) beats estimates, but lowers forecasts

As we discussed in our earnings preview yesterday, hotel manager Marriott International (NYSE: MAR) reported its second quarter numbers this morning, and as we expected, we were given some more troublesome news from the company.

First the good news. While analysts had been expecting to see the company show earnings of 49 cents a share, the company was actually able to come in higher, with 51 cents per share. However, despite showing 2 cents better than expected, this still represents an 11% drop in earnings from continuing operations.

With so much uncertainty around the company going into this morning's earnings report, you may assume that beating its number by 2 cents would have the stock moving higher in premarket trading. Well, you would be wrong. The stock is actually trading down a little more than 6% following the news.
