She's been named one ofForbes' top five Most Powerful Women, one ofTime's Digital 50, Salon calls hers one of their fave "Brilliant Careers" and Business Week calls her an Empire Builder. Inshort, she rocks the board room with her underplayed charm and woman-of-the-people management style. With her at thehelm, eBay has gone from little company that could to one of the biggest economies anywhere.

And now. Rightabout the time her hand-picked COO, Maynard Webb, retires thisAugust, Meg will turn 50. She has already been at this CEO job for eight years (equal, it should be noted, with herlongest tenure ever at a job up until now), rebuffing the opportunity to be CEO of Disney and (one wouldimagine) any number of less-well-publicized overtures.

When I saw the news about Maynard's retirement, Ithought, boy Meg has been at this job forever. And, hasn't she about done all she set out to do? And naturally, the next thing I wondered was, how long until Meg hands in her resignation? I predict it won't be long.
Continue reading Are Meg Whitman's days at eBay numbered?

Are Meg Whitman's days at eBay numbered? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 02 May 2006 20:09:00 EST. That .26% drop was a lot less than the Nasdaq's .77%drop, so I'll call it a decent day for the volatile stock. The shares could have been off more, but in the lasthalf hour of trading, the stock perked up. Could there be some bargain hunters coming in around the $34 mark?

Hitting the wires after the close was news that Chief Operating Officer <a href="http://eBay has no plansto fill Webb's role. It sounds like Webb may have workedhimself out of a job. The release notes, "eBay has no plans to fill Webb's role. Over the past year, Webb andWhitman oversaw the decentralization of many operational functions in order to better serve the business needs of thecompany's various platforms."

I couldn't find much in the blogosphere about this move yet, but TechFinancialNirvana noted last Friday that Webb was sellingshares.

eBay after hours: COO Maynard Webb retires originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 01 May 2006 17:47:00 EST.
