U.S. stock futures are flat Tuesday morning after China's central bank raised interest rates. Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 5 points to 12,113.00, and S&P 500 futures dropped 0.20 point to 1,315.60. Nasdaq 100 futures gained 0.50 point to 2,345.50.

U.S. stocks closed higher Monday, with the Dow gaining 0.57% to end the day at 12,162.

The NFIB index of small business optimism for January is due at 7:30 a.m. ET.

Intel Corporation (INTC) is a stock that looks cheap. But the one-year chart isn't so encouraging for investors. In August, I wrote a piece that was, at best, extremely hesitant on the short-term prospects for the equity. Long-term, I'm certainly more bullish; how can you not be on a business like Intel, right?

The shares closed today's regular session at $19.76, which represented a gain of about 1%. The 52-week low for the stock is $17.60, while the 52-week high is $24.37. I'd say that places the market more on the bearish side of the aisle. But the company just reported earnings for the third quarter. What do they tell us about the situation?

There's a downside and an upside to news regarding Intel's (INTC) $48-per-share successful effort to acquire McAfee (MFE), first discussed here on July 5, 2009 at a price of $40.82.

Boosted by likely FY2010/FY2011 EPS of $2.57 to $2.85, McAfee probably would have re-tested $45 later this year, assuming the U.S. economic recovery remained intact, then took on the $50 hurdle in 2011.

McAfee (MFE) logoBit of a surprise in the tech sector Thursday morning, as Intel (INTC) announced that it will purchase Internet-security firm McAfee (MFE) for the tidy sum of $7.68 billion.

This move comes as a bit of a surprise, as some analysts and investors believe the acquisition shows the importance that computing firms are applying to security. Intel noted that more "elements of our lives have moved online," meaning that security will become a "third pillar of what people demand from all computing experiences." Intel said that the deal "elevates focus on security on par with energy-efficient performance and connectivity." Bottom line: Intel wants to protect customers who are taking advantage of our new online lifestyle.

A reading of +2.4% GDP is still growth. It is just not very robust growth. It is also as the argument continues of whether the U.S. is headed for a double-dip recession or just a period of slower growth. PIMCO's Bill Gross calls it a long protracted period of slow growth. Today was lighter than normal on the earnings news, and the final verdict over a green or red ticker at the close was not clear until the final minutes today.

They explains, "Global Internet traffic is projected to grow 40 to 50 percent annually for the foreseeable future. According to Cisco, wireless data traffic is growing at an annualized rate of more than 130 percent, solid fundamentals.

"In the first quarter, 82 percent of S&P 500 companies beat earnings estimates, whereas 90 percent of the index's technology names though it accounts for less than 1 percent of total traffic.

The stock of McAfee Inc. (MFE), first discussed here on July 5, 2009 at a price of $40.82, continues to exhibit sideways action, but I still like the shares. Here's why:

Look for McAfee's revenue to increase 10% to 15% in 2010, as the slow recovery in IT spending continues. Further, companies have delayed upgrading their IT networks for an extended period, hence this should serve as a decent tailwind for MFE in the second half of 2010. Of course, there are no guarantees.

The company also has ample room to increase market share in key markets, and margins should also inch higher in 2010. The First Call FY2010/FY2011 EPS estimates for MFE are $2.70 to $3.01.

  • Acer Inc. reported its highest quarterly earnings in almost three years due in part to growth in shipments.
  • Baidu Inc. (BIDU) swung to a better-than-expected Q4 profit, with strong revenue growth, and offered rosy guidance.
  • Biogen Idec Inc. (BIIB) offered an upside surprise as well as full-year earnings above Wall Street estimates.

McAfee (MFE - option chain) shares are rising today after the company reported a fourth-quarter profit of $54.5 million, or 34 cents per share. Excluding one-time items, MFE earned 64 cents per share on revenue of $525 million, matching analysts' profit forecasts of 64 cents per share on revenue of $514 million. MFE also said its board approved a stock repurchase program of up to $500 million through December 2011. If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on MFE.

MFE opened this morning at $37.73. So far today the stock has hit a low of $37.66 and a high of $40.29. As of 11:30, MFE is trading at $39.55 up $1.66 (4.4%). The chart for MFE looks bullish and S&P gives MFE a positive 4 STARS (out of 5) buy ranking.

Analyst Upgrades

  • Deutsche Bank upgraded PNC Financial (PNC) to buy from hold on valuation as it believes the recent pullback in shares provides a buying opportunity. The firm raised its target on shares to $57 from $45.
  • Kaufman Bros. upgraded Expedia (EXPE) to buy from hold on valuation as it finds the risk/reward on shares attractive following the company's Q4 results and believes revenue margin concerns are overblown. The firm has a $27 price target on the stock.
  • Jesup & Lamont upgraded Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) to hold from sell following the company's Q4 results to reflect its improving traffic trends. The firm raised its target on shares to $96 from $81. Shares were also upgraded at BofA/Merrill to buy from neutral.
  • Rio Tinto (RTP) was upgraded to outperform from neutral at Credit Suisse.
  • FirstEnergy (FE) was upgraded to hold from underperform at Jefferies.
  • Marriott (MAR) was upgraded to perform from underperform at Oppenheimer.

I've upgraded McAffee (MFE), the security software company, to buy from hold. A hold rating had been issued on November 13, 2009, after McAfee's stock chart formed a short-term double-top at $46.

However, McAfee's chart is now showing signs that it will hold support at or near $37, hence the upgrade to buy.
