But analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters have high hopes for results from fertilizer and animal feed maker Mosaic (MOS), apparel maker Phillips Van Heusen (PVH) and discount retailer Family Dollar (FDO). So here's a look at what they anticipate from these three companies.

Mosaic

During its fiscal second quarter, Cargill agreed to distribute its stake in Mosaic, and Mosaic also said it would redeem senior notes. Analysts anticipate that the Minnesota-based potash producer will report per-share earnings of $1.07, a jump of 53.3% from the same quarter of last year. Mosaic also is expected to post revenue of $2.4 billion for the three months that ended in February. That's a 35.9% rise from a year earlier.

Continue reading Week in Preview: Mosaic, Family Dollar Earnings and March Unemployment Rate

Week in Preview: Mosaic, Family Dollar Earnings and March Unemployment Rate originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sun, 27 Mar 2011 12:30:00 EST. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) forecast lower yields for the current corn crop. Worldwide the rising demand for raw agricultural products is creating a need for more production. One way to increase production is to use more fertilizer.

Enter Mosaic (MOS), the world's largest combined producer of phosphate and potash. Mosaic is sitting on a virtual gold mine. It produces about 10 million tons of phosphate and the same for potash. Business is flourishing. Quoted in Investors.com, Chief Financial Officer Larry Stranghoener said: "The supply- demand factors are quite tight in our favor. (POT) as a related stock, reported fiscal first-quarter numbers Monday after the bell, but the market wasn't too pleased by them. Although net profit increased, expectations were not met. We've seen this sort of situation before; it can be painful for shareholders, but that's just the way Wall Street operates.

Take a look at the press release. Earnings per share jumped from 23 cents in last year's Q1 to 67 cents this time around.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are anticipating a profit of 72 cents per share, substantially higher than the company's year-ago earnings of 23 cents per share. Mosaic has a dismal history in the earnings spotlight, having fallen short of Wall Street's consensus profit expectations in three of the past four quarters.

Continue reading Can Mosaic Co. By contrast, MOS was only expected to see about 7,300 calls change hands. Meanwhile, fewer than 3,700 puts were exchanged during the course of Tuesday's trading, revealing a distinct bias toward bullishly oriented options.

Taking a closer look at the day's volume, one speculator has high hopes for MOS to rally during the latter half of 2010. The trader constructed a long call spread by buying to open 1,500 contracts of the equity's December 45 call, and simultaneously selling to open 1,500 contracts of the December 55 call. MOS was trading just north of $40 at the time of this transaction, placing both calls out of the money.

Continue reading Mosaic Co. Things aren't looking much better today, as the stock has surrendered nearly 3% following a downgrade at Goldman Sachs. The brokerage lowered its rating on POT (along with its peer - Mosaic ( MOS)) to "neutral" from "buy" today. Goldman also trimmed its 12-month price target on POT to $123.69 from $131, citing a number of fundamental concerns, including weak volume and lower corn prices.
Analysts had forecast a profit of 62 cents per share on revenue of $1.82 billion. If you think this stock won't be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on MOS.

This morning, MOS opened at $59.60. So far today the stock has hit a high of $60.21 and a low of $57.70. As of 11:55, MOS is trading at $58.41, down $2.36 (-3.9%). The chart for MOS looks bearish.
Continue reading Mosaic Drops on Disappointing Q3 Earnings

Mosaic Drops on Disappointing Q3 Earnings originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 01 Apr 2010 13:20:00 EST. But here's a look at what analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are expecting from a few of the stragglers that are scheduled to report results.

In the three months that ended in February, Mosaic Co. (MOS) declared a quarterly dividend and denied that the company was for sale. Analysts expect this potash and phosphate producer to report that fiscal third-quarter earnings surged nearly 80% from the same period of last year to $0.63 per share. Revenue for the period is expected to be 31.6% higher to $1.8 billion. So far, analysts anticipate sequential and year-over-year EPS and revenue growth in the fourth quarter. However, Mosaic's earnings results have fallen short of expectations in three of the past four quarters, by as much as 11 cents per share.

Continue reading The Week in Preview: End-of-Season Earnings from DG, MOS, RIMM ...

The Week in Preview: End-of-Season Earnings from DG, MOS, RIMM ... originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sun, 28 Mar 2010 12:30:00 EST.

JPMorgan upgraded TiVo (TIVO) to overweight from neutral as it believes Thursday's appeal win against DISH Network could lead to revenue upside. The firm raised its target price for shares to $23 from $15.

Collins Stewart upgraded DISH Network (DISH) to buy from hold on valuation, as it believes much of the impact from the negative appeals ruling is priced into the stock. The firm has a $30 target for shares.

Cowen upgraded Ciena (CIEN) to outperform from neutral. The firm believes Ciena's acquisition of MEN is transformative and will accelerate top line growth.
