Wednesday morning, New York Times Co. (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-new-york-times-company/nyt/nys">NYT</a>) warned that its <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20100922-707249.html">third-quarter revenue will decline</a> by a wider-than-expected margin, due to slower growth in digital advertising. Speaking at an investor conference in New York, CEO Janet Robinson explained that digital ad revenue is expected to rise about 14%, compared to its earlier forecast for growth in the mid-to-high teens.<br />
<br />
As a result, the company expects to swallow a third-quarter operating loss of 5 cents to 7 cents per share. Excluding items, <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/earnings/">earnings</a> are expected to arrive at 3 cents to 5 cents per share, compared to Wall Street's <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Consensus Estimate">consensus estimate</a> of 4 cents per share.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/22/new-york-times-q3-guidance/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New York Times Offers Bleak Q3 Guidance</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/22/new-york-times-q3-guidance/">New York Times Offers Bleak Q3 Guidance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 22 Sep 2010 12:10:00 EST. Though wildly popular with the nerd crowd (of which I'm a member ... the nerd world, not Foursquare), could a year-old location-based game go head-to-head with the 400 million-user-strong behemoth of the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/socialmedia/">social media</a> industry? In a strange twist, Facebook is actually <a href="http://weblogs.hitwise.com/heather-dougherty/2010/03/1_year_anniversary_for_foursqu_1.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+hitwise+%28Hitwise+Intelligence%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Feedfetcher">breathing life into the killer app</a> many expected it to kill.<br />
<br />
Thirty-three percent of Foursquare's traffic comes from Facebook, according to data from Hitwise (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/experian-ord-usd0-10/expn/ise">EXPN</a>), followed by Google (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/google-inc/goog/nas">GOOG</a>) at 22% and Twitter at 8%. The remaining one third of traffic, from everyone else, is fed in part by partnership with major brands such as the New York Times (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-new-york-times-company/nyt/nys">NYT</a>), Bravo and Zagat.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/15/facebook-growing-not-killing-foursquare/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Facebook Growing, Not Killing, Foursquare</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/15/facebook-growing-not-killing-foursquare/">Facebook Growing, Not Killing, Foursquare</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 15 Mar 2010 11:20:00 EST. Spending in January rose 0.5% but outpaced a 0.1% gain in personal income. This morning's strength came on the heels of an overseas stock market rally and that was enough to keep things rolling all day, even if the manufacturing data was lackluster. Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:</p>

S&amp;P 500: 2,273 (+1.58%)<br />
NASDAQ: 1,115 (+1.02%)</p>

Fifty-seven percent of respondents are drawn to local <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/newspaper/">newspaper</a> websites. But take this with a grain of salt: 54% chose online portals and 53% selected local <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/television/">television</a> websites. In terms of what consumers consider the most trusted local news source to be, newspapers have the lead, but the gap is narrowing. Now, only 33% choose the newspaper for this reason, with local television sites pulling in 32%.<br /> <br /> "While newspaper Web sites often face dozens of competitors touting their own local offerings in any given market, they have been able to thrive by leveraging trusted brands and strong local content to appeal to consumers and advertisers alike," <a target="_blank" href="http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1004070834">John Sturm, president and CEO of the NAA, said in a statement</a>.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/26/newspapers-claim-to-be-classified-leaders/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Newspapers Claim to be Classified Leaders</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/26/newspapers-claim-to-be-classified-leaders/">Newspapers Claim to be Classified Leaders</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 26 Feb 2010 12:30:00 EST. <p>During the three months that ended in December, New York Times released an <a href="http://money.aol.com/rtn/pr/new-york-times-releases-application-for-blackberry-smartphones/rfid273940236?channel=pf">app for the BlackBerry</a> and new features for <a href="http://money.aol.com/rtn/pr/the-new-york-times-launches-times-skimmer/rfid276528732?channel=pf">NYTimes.com</a>, as well as named <a href="http://money.aol.com/rtn/pr/the-new-york-times-company-names-todd-c-mccarty-senior-vice-president-human-resources/rfid280242087?channel=pf">a new HR chief</a>. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are looking for earnings for that period of $0.38 per share. That's up from $0.16 per share in the previous quarter and $0.30 per share a year ago. But revenue for the fourth quarter is expected to be 15.4% lower than a year ago to $653.2 million.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/09/will-the-new-york-times-ended-tough-year-with-earnings-bump/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Will The New York Times End Tough Year with Earnings Bump?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/09/will-the-new-york-times-ended-tough-year-with-earnings-bump/">Will The New York Times End Tough Year with Earnings Bump?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 09 Feb 2010 16:00:00 EST. Here's a look at a few of the companies that analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect to be the biggest earnings gainers this week.</p>
<p>Analysts are looking for <strong>Coinstar Inc.</strong> (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/coinstar-inc/cstr/nas">CSTR</a>), which distributes coin-counting, DVD-rental, and other self-service kiosks, to report that its fourth-quarter earnings more than doubled from a year ago to $0.32 per share. Revenue for the three months that ended in December is expected to have jumped 26.1% to $329.2 million. The analysts' forecast for the full year calls for earnings of $0.94 per share (+46.8%) on $1.2 billion in revenue (+25.9%). Coinstar has beat earnings estimates in the past three quarters, by as much as six cents per share.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/07/the-week-in-preview-high-hopes-for-coinstar-agilent-chipotle/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Week in Preview: High Hopes for Coinstar, Agilent, Chipotle, Baidu, Hasbro</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/07/the-week-in-preview-high-hopes-for-coinstar-agilent-chipotle/">The Week in Preview: High Hopes for Coinstar, Agilent, Chipotle, Baidu, Hasbro</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 07 Feb 2010 12:30:00 EST. Well, increasingly, <a target="_blank" href="http://digital.venturebeat.com/2010/02/03/is-facebook-becoming-a-portal/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=twitter-publisher-main&amp;utm_campaign=twitter">the answer is Facebook</a>. The social networking site, which boasts well over 350 million registered users, is now the fourth largest referral source of traffic to online news destinations. Almost a year ago, only 0.5% of traffic to news and media sites came from <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/Facebook/">Facebook</a>. Today, that level is 3.5%, according to <a target="_blank" href="http://weblogs.hitwise.com/us-heather-hopkins/2010/02/facebook_largest_news_reader_1.html">data from Web analytics firm Experian Hitwise</a>.</p>
<p>Only Google (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/google-inc/goog/nas">GOOG</a>), Yahoo! (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/yahoo-inc/yhoo/nas">YHOO</a>) and MSN (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/microsoft-corporation/msft/nas">MSFT</a>) send more traffic to news sites. <a target="_blank" href="http://news.google.com">Google News</a>, a subset of the search engine giant, failed to keep pace with Facebook, despite the fact that it exists specifically to send Internet users to media outlets. Only 1.39% of referrals came from this source.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/07/facebook-grows-as-a-source-for-news/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Facebook Grows as a Source for News</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/07/facebook-grows-as-a-source-for-news/">Facebook Grows as a Source for News</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 07 Feb 2010 10:20:00 EST. Indeed, a press release from The New York Times Company (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-new-york-times-company/nyt/nys">NYT</a>) hit the wires Wednesday morning, revealing that a paid version of NYTimes.com <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&amp;newsId=20100120005487&amp;newsLang=en" target="_blank">would launch</a> at the beginning of 2011 -- that's next year. So "All the News That's Fit to Print" will be available to Web browsers at a cost.</p>
<p>But the only folks that will have to open their wallets are those who leaf through lots of <em>Times </em>articles. The casual news browser will have free access to a specified number of articles each month before being charged. Subscribers who pay for home delivery of the traditional paper will have free and unlimited access to the site.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/20/its-official-your-online-new-york-times-will-come-at-a-price/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>It's Official: Your Online New York Times Will Come at a Price </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/20/its-official-your-online-new-york-times-will-come-at-a-price/">It's Official: Your Online New York Times Will Come at a Price </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 20 Jan 2010 13:00:00 EST. Well, the Times seems likely to take the plunge, hoping to replicate the successes of the <a href="http://www.ft.com" target="_blank"><em>Financial Times</em></a> and <em><a href="http://www.wsj.com">Wall Street Journal</a></em> ... except, of course, that the <a><em>Wall Street Journal</em></a><em> </em>is famous for not really delivering profits. Fortunately, the new pay wall is expected to look more like the <em>Financial Times </em>than the <em>Wall Street Journal</em>. The <a href="http://www.nytimes.com" target="_blank"><em>New York Times</em></a> is considering a "metered" system. Visitors will be able to read a certain number of articles free before being required to subscribe.</p>

<p> <span style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-top: 7px;"><script> digg_url = 'http://digg.com/business_finance/Most_News_Outlets_Are_Repetitive_New_York_Times_Repeats'; </script> <script src=" http://digg.com/api/diggthis.js"></script></span> This is an interesting twist -- instead of touting readers or paid circulation or ads or total revenue, it's talking about production. It's almost as if Ford (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/ford-motor-company/f/nys" target="_blank">F</a>) were to announce: "We make more cars than anyone else." Who the hell cares if they sell any, right? What's important is production, not sales! For the <em>Times</em>, and print media in general, it feels like yet another attempt to justify its existence and "prove" that it is more valuable than the more cost-effective and nimble online outlets.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/11/most-news-outlets-are-repetitive-new-york-times-repeats/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Most News Outlets Are Repetitive, New York Times Repeats</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/11/most-news-outlets-are-repetitive-new-york-times-repeats/">Most News Outlets Are Repetitive, New York Times Repeats</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 11 Jan 2010 12:30:00 EST. The reach offered by this <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/microblogging/">microblogging</a> platform is profound, and skipping it means yielding digital turf to the competition. </p>
<p>Yet, as the country's major brands have flocked to Twitter, not all have mastered it. Some merely push headlines and deals, while others have used it as a way to open a dialogue with their customers, build relationships and ultimately grow their businesses. A study by <em>The Big Money </em>sought to determine the <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34243625/ns/business-the_big_money/">dozen companies that are mastering Twitter</a> and why they are the masters.</p>

Total ad revenue plummeted in the third quarter to $6.4 billion for the print jockeys, a decline of 28%. <a href="http://www.naa.org/TrendsandNumbers/Advertising-Expenditures.aspx" target="_blank">This info from the Newspaper Association of America</a> drives home the notion that conditions will only worsen for the newspaper industry. So, if you're hoping those shares of New York Times Company (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-new-york-times-company/nyt/nys" target="_blank">NYT</a>), Gannett (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/gannett-inc-del/gci/nys" target="_blank">GCI</a>) and Washington Post Company (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-washington-post-company/wpo/nys" target="_blank">WPO</a>), holding your breath will leave you little more than dizzy.</p>
<p>Of the total advertising revenue generated in the third quarter of 2009, $5.8 million came from print, the lowest quarterly amount this year. The $623 million in online advertising sold by America's newspapers was also 2009's worst. Both are down substantially from the same quarter in 2008, when the newspapers posted print ad revenue of $8.2 million and online ad revenue of $750 million, according to NAA data. At this time last year, we lamented year-over-year declines approaching 20%. Now, we have the same feelings as ad revenue drops approach 30%.</p>

The New York Times News Service will lose 25 editorial positions next year and shift the service's editing to one of the parent company's Florida <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/newspapers/">newspapers</a>. At present, the news service has 30 editorial jobs. Some of the layoffs will occur in February, and the others will happen in May.</p>
<p>These layoffs are not included in the planned slashing of 100 jobs in the flagship newspaper's newsroom -- a workforce reduction of 8% that should take hold by the end of the year. Cond&eacute; Nast's ad page results are out for its 2009 issues, now that the last issue of the year has been sold for each of them ... <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/12/business/media/12mag.html" target="_blank">and the situation is grim</a>. </p>
<p>Cond&eacute; Nast lost 8,359 ad pages this year, according to a report released on Wednesday. Ad pages have plunged 30% this year. Cost cutting has been used to offset the revenue declines, with more than 450 positions removed this year and several magazines shuttered, including <em>Gourmet</em> and <em>Modern Bride</em>.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/12/ad-pages-at-conde-nast-down-nearly-a-third/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ad pages at Conde Nast down nearly a third</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/12/ad-pages-at-conde-nast-down-nearly-a-third/">Ad pages at Conde Nast down nearly a third</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 12 Nov 2009 12:40:00 EST. New owners and editors are trying to make the magazine a <strike>success</strike> reality again, and they are making the web a priority ... which shouldn't be news but is for an ailing print industry. </p>
<p>The new editor-in-chief, Jermaine Hall, told <em>AdAge</em> that "Vibe.com is really the hub," and that everything needs to point back to the online presence. The print publication will be just one part of the Vibe Lifestyle Network, a move we're also seeing with the likes of <em>Rolling Stone</em>, where the website is being brought back into the fold (and may actually get some resources).</p>

Can't say I was mightily impressed by the numbers. Sure, there was a profit increase, but the top line wasn't exciting, and the newspaper division, as you might have expected, experienced a sharp decline in sales. </p>
<p>Net revenues rose 2%. Earnings per share came in at $1.81. That was sharply higher than the $1.08 per share recorded in the comparable period. Yet, I think you have to be careful in terms of reading too much positive spin into the growth rate.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/30/the-washington-post-company-increases-income-but-shares-sell-of/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Washington Post Company increases income, but shares sell off</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/30/the-washington-post-company-increases-income-but-shares-sell-of/">The Washington Post Company increases income, but shares sell off</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 30 Oct 2009 16:40:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.wsj.com" target="_blank">Wall Street Journal</a>, a <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/news-corporation/nws/nas" target="_blank">News Corp</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/news-corporation/nws/nas" target="_blank">NWS</a>) property, is <a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/the_revolving_door/more_business_journalism_layoffs_wall_street_journal_closes_boston_office_141650.asp" target="_blank">closing its Boston bureau and sending nine employees into the wind</a>. The newswire and <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com" target="_blank">MarketWatch</a> operations are going to stay open in <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/Boston/">Boston</a>, however, with no headcount impact. </p>
<p>The Journal doesn't have any plans to close other offices, according to a memo by managing editor Robert Thomson: "there are no plans, nascent or otherwise, to close any other U.S. or international bureau." The <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/WSJ/">WSJ</a> will still support an "investigative function" in Boston, but the New York-based Money and Investing team will cover Boston's <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/mutualfund/">mutual fund</a> industry, which boasts such heavy hitters as <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/Fidelity/">Fidelity</a>. </p>
<p>At the same time, magazine company <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/TimeInc/">Time Inc</a>., owned by <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/time-warner-inc/twx/nys" target="_blank">Time Warner</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/time-warner-inc/twx/nys" target="_blank">TWX</a>) is looking to cut $100 million in expenses, and <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/layoffs/">layoffs</a> will undoubtedly figure into the equation. The company that owns <a href="http://www.time.com" target="_blank">Time</a>, <a href="http://www.fortune.com" target="_blank">Fortune</a>, <a href="http://www.people.com" target="_blank">People</a> and <a href="http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/" target="_blank">Sports Illustrated</a> - and falls under the same umbrella as <a href="http://www.aol.com" target="_blank">AOL</a>, which owns <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com" target="_blank">BloggingStocks</a> - is feeling the squeeze of a media recession that's even worse than the regular recession we've all been battling for what feels like decades. </p>
