Microsoft competes with other tech bellwethers like Google (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/google-inc/goog/nas" class="inlinked">GOOG</a>), Research In Motion (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/research-in-motion-limited/rimm/nas" class="inlinked">RIMM</a>) and Apple (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/apple-inc/aapl/nas" class="inlinked">AAPL</a>) that make smart phones and tablets, as well as the corresponding operating systems for mobile phones and tablet devices. <br />
<br />
We believe the Nokia deal presents upside for Microsoft, as it provides an opportunity to gain share in both the smart phone operating system market and the search advertising market by leveraging Nokia's large global presence.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/22/nokia-partnership-provides-upside-for-microsoft-stock/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nokia Partnership Provides Upside for Microsoft Stock</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/22/nokia-partnership-provides-upside-for-microsoft-stock/">Nokia Partnership Provides Upside for Microsoft Stock</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 22 Feb 2011 09:30:00 EST. Some of the recent transactions include QNX, Dash Navigation and Torch Mobile.<br />

Tthe latest deal came this week: RIM agreed to <a href="http://blog.gist.com/2011/02/14/gist-is-now-part-of-research-in-motion-rim/">buy Gist</a> (the price tag was not disclosed). Kind of a boring day, at least for my portfolio. In particular, one of my holdings, Microsoft (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/microsoft-corporation/msft/nas">MSFT</a>), is acting in a very boring manner. I was hoping to see some interest on the part of Wall Street in that name today following the stock's recent weakness, but alas, there is none to be had. At the time of this writing, shares are down fractionally to $27.15.</p>
<p>Investors have been digesting the news <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/13/microsoft-and-nokia/">concerning the deal</a> between the maker of Windows and Nokia (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/nokia-corporation/nok/nys">NOK</a>). The plan is to generate some competition in the smartphone business. Success with this initiative would be nice for shareholders of both companies.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/14/microsoft-should-i-add-to-my-position/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Microsoft: Should I Add to My Position?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/14/microsoft-should-i-add-to-my-position/">Microsoft: Should I Add to My Position?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 14 Feb 2011 15:30:00 EST. Would this outsider - who was a former executive at Microsoft (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/microsoft-corporation/msft/nas">MSFT</a>) - shock the slumbering organization into action? Well, based on the stock price over the past week, the answer is "no."<br />
<br />
It seems that Elop is trying to remake Nokia into, well, Microsoft. True, Microsoft is a great company - but it is certainly not a model of renewal. And the company is desperate to get a big deal in the mobile space.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/14/nokia-focuses-on-microsoft/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nokia Focuses on Microsoft</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/14/nokia-focuses-on-microsoft/">Nokia Focuses on Microsoft</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 14 Feb 2011 14:00:00 EST. Microsoft (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/microsoft-corporation/msft/nas" class="inlinked">MSFT</a>) jumped out the starting gate with its Windows operating system and took the world by storm. Then for some unknown reason, Microsoft missed the entire search engine revolution and Google (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/google-inc/goog/nas" class="inlinked">GOOG</a>) raced to first place. Now Microsoft has again missed the next leg -- the iPhone and iPad revolution, and Apple (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/apple-inc/aapl/nas" class="inlinked">AAPL</a>) holds first place in this segment.</p>
<p>Nokia (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/nokia-corporation/nok/nys" class="inlinked">NOK</a>) was a pioneer in the smartphone revolution, but with Apple's drive to the top, Nokia lost its momentum. Once Nokia had <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/12/technology/12nokia.html"> 50% of the handset market</a>. Now that share has fallen to just 29%. It's hard to believe but Microsoft has only 2% of the global phone software market.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/13/microsoft-and-nokia/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Microsoft and Nokia Join to Build a New Smartphone</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/13/microsoft-and-nokia/">Microsoft and Nokia Join to Build a New Smartphone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 13 Feb 2011 09:00:00 EST. Now, The <a href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/0a835462-28c0-11e0-aa18-00144feab49a.html#axzz1C3boeTWv"><em>Financial Times</em></a> reports that Apple (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/apple-inc/aapl/nas">AAPL</a>) is planning to expand the iPhone to handle mobile commerce, giving the company access to the multibillion-dollar transaction industry.<br />
<br />
You are probably wondering what and how this will be done. The iPhone 5, due out this year, likely will incorporate technology called Near Field Communication (NFC). NFC incorporates financial account information and ties the data to specific devices.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/05/apple-wave-and-pay-for-iphone-5/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Apple Expected to Include 'Wave &amp; Pay' with iPhone 5</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/05/apple-wave-and-pay-for-iphone-5/">Apple Expected to Include 'Wave &amp; Pay' with iPhone 5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 05 Feb 2011 13:40:00 EST. That is, another quarter with a drop in earnings. As for Q4, there was <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/28/technology/28nokia.html?src=busln">a 21% reduction</a>. As for its global market share, it fell by 2% to 32%. So far in today's trading, the stock is off 2.52% to $10.46.</p>
<p>True, Nokia cranks out lots of cash. In the quarter, earnings still amounted to $1 billion. Things like better than expected <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/earnings/">earnings</a>, new contracts or a breakthrough discovery that will convert to better sales and profits. But they should also look for red flags, troubling developments within a company that could spell lower earnings in the future, even if they start with the opposite intent.</p>
<p>I'm reminded of that as I read about Microsoft (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/microsoft-corporation/msft/nas">MSFT</a>) getting into the mobile phone business. Of course, management thinks it will create more sales and profits, else why would they enter one of the most competitive markets on the planet? The problem (the red flag) is that there are already too many mobile phones with every type of application available and profit margins are much slimmer than in software. What can Microsoft add to this market that doesn't exist?</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/16/comfort-zone-investing-a-big-red-flag-or-a-little-one/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Comfort Zone Investing: A Big Red Flag or a Little One?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/16/comfort-zone-investing-a-big-red-flag-or-a-little-one/">Comfort Zone Investing: A Big Red Flag or a Little One?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 16 Oct 2010 10:30:00 EST. Brands (<a target="_blank" class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/yum-brands-inc/yum/nys">YUM</a>), while Marriott (<a target="_blank" class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/marriott-international-incorpora/mar/nys">MAR</a>) and Pepsico (<a target="_blank" class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/pepsico-inc/pep/nys">PEP</a>) met consensus <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Earnings%20Per%20Share%20-%20EPS">EPS</a> estimates. This week, bellwether companies Intel (<a target="_blank" class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/intel-corporation/intc/nas">INTC</a>), General Electric (<a target="_blank" class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/general-electric-company/ge/nys">GE</a>), Google (<a target="_blank" class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/google-inc/goog/nas">GOOG</a>) and JPMorgan Chase (<a target="_blank" class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/jpmorgan-chase-and-co/jpm/nys">JPM</a>) are scheduled to report their third-quarter results, and analysts polled by Thomson Reuters are looking for earnings growth from all of them.</p>
<p>Santa Clara, Calif.-based <strong>Intel </strong>announced the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/intel-to-acquire-mcafee/rfid359365006/?channel=pf">acquisition of McAfee</a> and joint ventures with <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/ge-intel-to-form-new-healthcare-joint-venture/rfid354017938/?channel=pf">General Electric</a> and <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/intel-and-nokia-create-first-joint-laboratory/rfid360718221/?channel=pf">Nokia</a> (<a target="_blank" class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/nokia-corporation/nok/nys">NOK</a>) during its third quarter. Analysts forecast earnings for that period to come to 50 cents per share, which is up 34.0% from the same period of last year. The number one semiconductor maker's revenue for the three months ended in September is expected to total $11.0 billion, or 17.1% more than a year earlier. Looking ahead to the full year, the forecast thus far is for earnings of $1.94 per share (+44.8%) and $43.3 billion in revenue (+23.4%). The per-share earnings topped analysts' expectations in the past four quarters, by as much as a dime per share.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/10/week-in-preview-intc-ge-goog-jpm-earnings-expectations/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Week in Preview: Earnings Expectations for Intel, GE, Google and JPMorgan</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/10/week-in-preview-intc-ge-goog-jpm-earnings-expectations/">Week in Preview: Earnings Expectations for Intel, GE, Google and JPMorgan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 10 Oct 2010 12:30:00 EST.
