According to InvestorPlace's survey of NPD figures, consoles systems saw a 10% increase in sales. Microsoft's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/microsoft-corporation/msft/nas" class="inlinked">MSFT</a>) Xbox 360 was particularly robust. The Nintendo (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/nintendo-co-ltd-unsp-adr/ntdoy/nao">NTDOY</a>) Wii didn't do badly, either.</p>
<p>As you might imagine, there were other companies mentioned in the article. Electronic Arts (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/electronic-arts-inc/erts/nas" class="inlinked">ERTS</a>) scored pretty well, as did Activision Blizzard (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/activision-blizzard-inc/atvi/nas" class="inlinked">ATVI</a>). In fact, the latter's latest Call of Duty entry is apparently still selling a bunch of copies in retail shelves even though the holiday season is long gone.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/11/video-games-do-all-right-in-february-which-stock-should-an-inve/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Video Games Do All Right in February: Which Stock Should an Investor Buy?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/11/video-games-do-all-right-in-february-which-stock-should-an-inve/">Video Games Do All Right in February: Which Stock Should an Investor Buy?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 11 Mar 2011 17:30:00 EST. The Nintendo 3DS is supposed to deliver a fascinating, futuristic portable-gaming experience. The company's American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) have been compelling on their own. An active trader has had several opportunities in recent weeks to play the ups and the downs of this name. <br />
<br />
Today, the ADRs find themselves on the downside. At the time of this writing, they were off by 4.4% to $36.60; so far, the volume backing the price movement is lackluster. The 52-week low for the video-game giant is $31.10 while the 52-week high is $43.95.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/28/cautious-approach-with-nintendo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cautious Approach with Nintendo</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/28/cautious-approach-with-nintendo/">Cautious Approach with Nintendo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 28 Feb 2011 15:40:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/electronic-arts-inc/erts/nas">ERTS</a>) received a downgrade today, according to <a href="http://www.theflyonthewall.com/permalinks/entry.php/ERTSid1363156/ERTS-Electronic-Arts-downgraded-to-Hold-from-Buy-at-Brean-Murray">TheFly</a>. The company is now considered a hold by Brean Murray. What should investors make of this change? <br />
<br />
Well, looking at it a little over an hour to go before the end of the day, it's notable that the stock is up 1.6% to $15.37 and that volume isn't overwhelming. Encouraging? Perhaps. Whenever there's a downgrade, shareholders usually must brace themselves for a sell-off. Thankfully, that didn't happen in this case.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/24/electronic-arts-how-does-the-stock-look/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Electronic Arts: How Does the Stock Look?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/24/electronic-arts-how-does-the-stock-look/">Electronic Arts: How Does the Stock Look?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 24 Jan 2011 16:40:00 EST. Hey, they very well could be.<br />
<br />
However, if you took a look at a recent <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSL3E6N605E20101208?">Reuters</a> article, you might suddenly question the idea of stocking up on those very same ADRs. That's because, simply put, the cultural status of the Wii seems to be further weakening. Not only that, but the extremely popular Nintendo DS handheld system is facing increasing competition from other devices.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/09/nintendo-buy-or-sell/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo: Buy or Sell?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/09/nintendo-buy-or-sell/">Nintendo: Buy or Sell?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 09 Dec 2010 18:00:00 EST. I do. It's a fun sector. And there's such theoretical potential for growth (assuming compelling titles are produced that can compete with casual online offerings and can command a decent price premium).<br />
<br />
But you're nervous. I know I am. We've been hearing how the industry isn't necessarily doing as well as it had been. And with the latest sales report, we have further confirmation that caution may be the best strategy for investors when it comes to dealing with ideas like Activision Blizzard Inc. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/activision-blizzard-inc/atvi/nas">ATVI</a>) and Electronic Arts Inc. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/electronic-arts-inc/erts/nas">ERTS</a>).<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/15/video-game-industry-remains-challenged/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Video Game Industry Remains Challenged</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/15/video-game-industry-remains-challenged/">Video Game Industry Remains Challenged</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 15 Oct 2010 17:00:00 EST. It has to do with disappointment surrounding the release date of the Nintendo 3DS hand-held system -- which will miss the holiday season -- as well a bad <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/story/company-news/nintendo-cuts-profit-forecast-and-says-new-3-d-device-will-miss/19654300/">profit outlook</a> (I'm presuming the latter issue was more responsible for the bearishness than the former one).</p>
<p>My colleague Gary Sattler <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/29/nintendo-slashes-earnings-forecast-while-betting-heavily-on-3ds/">gave his opinion</a> on the situation the other day. The question is, should an investor buy the company's American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) on pullbacks? What kind of opportunity do they represent? Yesterday, they closed down 4.9% to $31.20. Volume was very heavy.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/01/is-nintendo-a-buy-on-dips/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Is Nintendo a Buy on Dips?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/01/is-nintendo-a-buy-on-dips/">Is Nintendo a Buy on Dips?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 01 Oct 2010 09:00:00 EST. The company has cut its earnings forecast by more than 50% and is speaking in terms that signal wishful thinking more than corporate direction. As of this writing, Nintendo shares have lost over 8.5% on the day.<br />
<br />
What bothers me here is not the market's reaction to the company's guidance, as much as the appearance that Nintendo is suffering from an uncharacteristic lack of precise forward momentum.<br />

(<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/nintendo-co-ltd-unsp-adr/ntdoy/nao">NTDOY</a>) has decided to make its higher-end handheld hardware a little cheaper for consumers. According to <a href="http://www.theflyonthewall.com/permalinks/entry.php/NTDOYid1291312/NTDOY-Nintendo-dropping-prices-of-Nintendo-DSi-DSi-XL-systems-on-September-">TheFly</a>, the Nintendo DSi and the Nintendo DSiXL will sport a cost of $149.99 and $169.99 beginning September 12, respectively. That's $20 less than the old price. <br />
<br />
Now, you would have thought that the Nintendo DS Lite would have seen its price reduced as well, but I'm sorry to say you'd be wrong. That unit will remain at $129.99. I guess Nintendo is sending a strong message: go for the higher-end models.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/30/nintendos-new-ds-pricing-strategy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo's New DS Pricing Strategy</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/30/nintendos-new-ds-pricing-strategy/">Nintendo's New DS Pricing Strategy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 30 Aug 2010 17:50:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/nintendo-co-ltd-unsp-adr/ntdoy/nao">NTDOY</a>). I wish I had good news to report. I don't: they're down by almost 4% at the time of this writing, coming in at a quote of $33.60. Those who invest in the famous video-game giant are certainly disappointed today, given the news about total Wii sales in the United States. <br />
<br />
As <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/story/nintendo-wii-sales/19589014/">Douglas McIntyre</a> stated, over 30 million of the consoles are in American households. And the rate at which they got into those households was pretty quick. The company has sold a ton of its first-party software to users. The Wii has been the toast of casual (as well as some not-so-casual) players this console cycle, to the eternal chagrin of Sony Corporation (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/sony-corporation/sne/nys">SNE</a>) and Microsoft Corporation (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/microsoft-corporation/msft/nas">MSFT</a>).<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/11/nintendo-has-sold-a-lot-of-wii-systems-does-it-matter-to-stock/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo Has Sold a Lot of Wii Systems: Does It Matter to Stock?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/11/nintendo-has-sold-a-lot-of-wii-systems-does-it-matter-to-stock/">Nintendo Has Sold a Lot of Wii Systems: Does It Matter to Stock?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 11 Aug 2010 15:40:00 EST. Even Best Buy (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/best-buy-incorporated/bby/nys">BBY</a>) has redesigned its floor plan to heavily focus on videogames, and also recently got into the <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20100615-709683.html" target="_blank">used game business</a> to compete with juggernaut GameStop (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/gamestop-corp-new/gme/nys">GME</a>).<br />
<br />
Despite the macro tailwinds, video games are a cyclical sector that depend on the lifecycle of a console as well as game release schedules. This year, the sector has particularly struggled as a result of weaker games and investor fears that mobile games will eat into demand for console games.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/16/video-game-sales-continue-decline/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Video Game Sales Continue Decline</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/16/video-game-sales-continue-decline/">Video Game Sales Continue Decline</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 16 Jul 2010 15:10:00 EST. My screen shows the ADRs up by $1.53, or well over 4%. <br />

There's a lot of excitement surrounding the Electronic Entertainment Expo this week. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/15/nintendo-e3-keynote-live-from-the-nokia-center/">Joystiq.com</a> has coverage of Nintendo's part of the program. And I would have to imagine this is why we're seeing some excitement in the shares today. When thinking of motion controlled technology most of us would immediately think of Nintendo (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/nintendo-co-ltd-unsp-adr/ntdoy/nao">NTDOY</a>) Wii and its body-controlled technology, which is meant to capture some of the mindshare from the console favored by the casual player.<br />
<br />
Is Microsoft's attempt too little too late? Will its motion-sensing help boost the prospects for the stock? I would definitely not buy shares of Microsoft based on this news. While it could indeed help the Xbox 360 sell more units in the short term once it eventually hits the market, I'm not certain it will have any long-term appeal. Plus, you don't invest in Microsoft solely for its video-game division.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/14/will-new-video-game-technology-help-microsoft/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Will New Video-Game Technology Help Microsoft?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/14/will-new-video-game-technology-help-microsoft/">Will New Video-Game Technology Help Microsoft?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 14 Jun 2010 10:30:00 EST. Earlier in the year, I took a <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/27/trade-update-realized-loss-on-gamestop/">lousy loss</a> on it, only to see the shares <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/18/gamestop-up-on-q4-news-time-to-get-back-in/">rebound</a>. After the rebound, they started to go down again. And now, with international issues destroying the markets, there's added confusion following the release of the company's first-quarter report. <br />
<br />
The chart, as they say, says it all. Over the last <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/gamestop-corp-new/gme/nys/tech-chart">twelve months</a>, the stock has confounded the traders (well, maybe I should just speak for myself and say it's confounded me). There's been no solid direction to the shares as players attempt to figure out exactly where the business model is going. Can it withstand the threat of games-by-download? Can it compete with the casual titles people play on mobile platforms? And what about Best Buy Co., Inc. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/best-buy-incorporated/bby/nys">BBY</a>), Target Corporation (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/target-corporation/tgt/nys">TGT</a>), and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">WMT</a>)? They want their share of the industry, too. <p>According to industry reports, Playboy is planning on a mix of new sites aimed at tackling a tamer market -- and none of them involve nudity. According to Playboy insiders, the company is developing a "free, safe-for-work site" its calling TheSmokingJacket.com, as well as additional subscription content with a slightly tamer feel.</p>
<p>Broadening your appeal beyond a core product is no easy task. But if done successfully, it can forever change the fortunes of a company. Just look at <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/nintendo/" class="inlinked">Nintendo</a> (NTDOY) and its efforts to make video games mainstream and not a niche product for pimply-faced teenagers.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/07/what-playboy-can-learn-from-nintendo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>What Playboy Can Learn from Nintendo</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/07/what-playboy-can-learn-from-nintendo/">What Playboy Can Learn from Nintendo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 07 May 2010 16:40:00 EST. (ADR) (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/nintendo-co-ltd-unsp-adr/ntdoy/nao">NTDOY</a>) is an entity I've been cautious on. I've made money on it before, but to be honest, even though it has done very well for some market players in <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/nintendo-co-ltd-unsp-adr/ntdoy/nao/tech-chart">recent months</a>, I find the ADRs difficult to buy. They are currently priced at $42.45. I would really like to see them a lot lower before entertaining a trade.</p>
<p>Problem is, I'm not sure when, or if, they will go lower (not in the short term, anyway). They're currently near a 52-week high, and after a news item I just read, I have to admit I'm feeling more and more bullish on the business.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/03/is-nintendo-a-buy-after-news-item/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Is Nintendo a Buy?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/03/is-nintendo-a-buy-after-news-item/">Is Nintendo a Buy?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 03 May 2010 17:40:00 EST. <br />
Video game console makers -- including Sony, Microsoft (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/microsoft-corporation/msft/nas">MSFT</a>) with its Xbox, and Nintendo (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/nintendo-co-ltd-unsp-adr/ntdoy/nao">NTDOY</a>) with its Wii -- have taken great pains to ensure that their devices do more than just play the latest Mario or Halo title. As <a target="_blank" href="http://www.investorplace.com/experts/jeff_reeves/march-video-game-sales-activision-atvi-electonic-arts-erts-sony-sne.html?cp=bloggingstocks&amp;cc=synd&amp;cs=investorplace">March video game sales figures show,</a> hardware sales are still anemic thanks to weak consumer spending. Pitching their products as multi-use entertainment devices is one strategy to stop the downward trend.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/23/mlb-games-coming-to-sony-ps3/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MLB Games Coming to Sony PS3</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/23/mlb-games-coming-to-sony-ps3/">MLB Games Coming to Sony PS3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 23 Apr 2010 12:00:00 EST. But investors should beware: Not everything is what it seems. <br />
<br />
Part of the recent enthusiasm around video game stocks comes from game maker Activision's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/activision-blizzard-inc/atvi/nas" class="inlinked">ATVI</a>) announcement on Thursday that it was raising its guidance for its Q1 results, which will be released on May 6. The company expects earnings of 72 cents per share, up from its earlier forecast of 70 cents per share. Shares were up nearly 4% on the news and the stock is up about 19% for the year. <br />
<br />
Nintendo is also the source of some intrigue as it pushes ahead with ambitious plans to bring <a href="http://www.investorplace.com/experts/jeff_reeves/nintendo-ntdoy-schools-video-game-stocks-lf-leapfrog-sony-sne-microsoft-msft.html?cp=bloggingstocks&amp;cc=synd&amp;cs=investorplace">video games to the classroom</a> and to implement <a href="http://www.investorplace.com/experts/jeff_reeves/video-game-stocks-intendo-ntdoy-3d-ds-3ds.html?cp=bloggingstocks&amp;cc=synd&amp;cs=investorplace" target="_blank">3D video game technology</a>. Plus, the company is rolling out a souped-up <a href="http://www.investorplace.com/experts/jeff_reeves/nintendo-ntody-apple-aapl-ipad-dsi-video-games.html?cp=bloggingstocks&amp;cc=synd&amp;cs=investorplace" target="_blank">DSi video game console with a bigger screen. </a><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/16/rise-in-video-game-sales-was-expected-as-is-april-slump/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Don't Expect Much Upside for Video Game Stocks</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/16/rise-in-video-game-sales-was-expected-as-is-april-slump/">Don't Expect Much Upside for Video Game Stocks</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 16 Apr 2010 15:00:00 EST. <p>The biggest reason is simply because the bar is set pretty low. March 2009 video game sales were down 17% when up against 2008 numbers, and unless the data gets seriously skewed we should see an organic rebound in numbers just from that low. If you'll recall, March 2009 was pretty bad on all fronts -- the economy shed 650,000 jobs, stocks hit a 12-year low, and there was a -6% contraction in GDP for the first quarter of 2009.<br />
<br />
With lower expectations, the video game industry may win a reprieve when the March numbers roll out. But on top of those low expectations, a new Nintendo console and a few blockbuster titles should result in decent sales for the industry.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/06/march-video-game-sales-could-level-up-nintendo-sony-and-others/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>March Video Game Sales Could Level Up Nintendo, Sony and Others</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/06/march-video-game-sales-could-level-up-nintendo-sony-and-others/">March Video Game Sales Could Level Up Nintendo, Sony and Others</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 06 Apr 2010 15:00:00 EST. I'm no different. Here are four companies that I monitor almost every single day, and a brief opinion on each of them.</p>
<p><strong>Activision Blizzard</strong> (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/activision-blizzard-inc/atvi/nas">ATVI</a>): I sold this one <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/26/why-i-sold-activision-blizzard/">back in January</a>. Some believe I was wrong to do so. I definitely comprehend the sentiment, because really, this is the best publisher in the sector. Compared to Electronic Arts (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/electronic-arts-inc/erts/nas">ERTS</a>) and Take-Two Interactive (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/take-two-interactive-software-inc/ttwo/nas">TTWO</a>), Activision Blizzard has an enviable pipeline. Unfortunately, the video-game industry isn't firing on all cylinders; check out the most recent <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN1123020020100312?type=marketsNews">monthly-sales report</a>, and you'll see what I mean. In addition, the company's <em>Guitar Hero</em> franchise isn't the fad it once was. I do want to get in on the stock again, though; lately, the price seems to be perking up. I'm not ready to send in the buy order just yet. I'm waiting for further strength to materialize in the shares.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/13/stocks-on-my-watch-list-atvi-lgf-ntdoy-wwe/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Stocks on My Watch List: ATVI, LGF, NTDOY, WWE</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/13/stocks-on-my-watch-list-atvi-lgf-ntdoy-wwe/">Stocks on My Watch List: ATVI, LGF, NTDOY, WWE</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 13 Mar 2010 15:10:00 EST.
