Friday's fourth-quarter GDP numbers offered more evidence that the economy is picking up steam, but one of the biggest obstacles to the recovery remains the stubbornly high unemployment rate. We'll find out whether there's been any movement on that front when employment data for January comes out this week. The Challenger Job-Cut report and ADP employment data are due Wednesday, and the government's unemployment rate on Friday. Another mild increase in jobs is expected, in line with the three-month average, but not enough to significantly reduce the unemployment rate.
Also look for the ISM manufacturing and nonmanufacturing indexes this week, as well as the Chicago PMI and the New York NAPM index. And Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke will speak to the National Press Club on Thursday.

The earnings crunch continues this week, and analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are anticipating lots of strong quarterly reports.
For example, year-over-year earnings growth from big oil Chevron (CVX), ConocoPhillips (COP), ExxonMobil (XOM) and Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A) are expected to be in double digits. The same is true of many other energy and mining concerns reporting this week: Allegheny Technologies (ATI), Alliant Energy (LNT), Arch Coal (ACI), Cliffs Natural Resources (CLF), CMS Energy (CMS), CONSOL Energy (CNX), DPL (DPL), Hess Corp. (HES), Minerals Technologies (MTX), Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD), PPL Corp. (PPL), Southwestern Energy (SWN), Total (TOT), Whiting Petroleum (WLL), Williams Companies (WMB) and Wisconsin Energy (WEC).

After a horrible 2009, this year is shaping up much better for the semiconductor operators. Just look at Novellus (
NVLS). In its latest quarterly
report, the company beat expectations as the stock price is up over 3% to $27.47. Actually, the stock has roughly doubled over the past year. And in light of the rebound in the market, the momentum is likely to continue.

TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says you take your life into your own hands if you fade the opening in today's market. A year ago with the futures up, all you could think of is how much you wanted to "fade" that opening, how great it would be just to lay out any shorts into strength. You could choose pretty much anything going into earnings season.
The techs? Last good quarter. The banks? A travesty. You didn't even know if the banks you are short would survive. The oils? Free fall. The metals? Amazing downward pressure coming from hedge fund redemptions. The insurers? Will they make it? Retail? The balance sheets looked terrible going into what would be a terrible holiday selling season. The autos and auto-related? Disaster.

TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says the diamonds in the rough don't get much press, but they're the real heroes in this market. The troubled airline industry. The troubled auto industry. Have they ever not been "troubled"? For as long as I have been in this business, these two industries have been in huge trouble. Yet somehow it is news that
United (NASDAQ:
UAUA) (
Cramer's Take),
AMR (NYSE:
AMR) (
Cramer's Take) and
Delta (NYSE:
DAL) (
Cramer's Take) are in trouble. Somehow we're still sweating the auto program -- and I, for one, thought Steve Rattner was doing a pretty good job and don't want to read into his resignation because too many times in my life I have seen the smear and know it for what it is.
I want to talk about the industries that aren't troubled. Last night
CSX (NYSE:
CSX) (
Cramer's Take) reported a hugely profitable quarter despite a big decline in revenues. At one point the rail industry was a hugely troubled industry and you used to worry about the companies swinging to big losses every downturn. Now CSX gets 6 inches of ink today and the deeply troubled airline industry gets reams.

TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says an earnings surprise from Philips, like Alcoa last week, didn't do much to put markets in gear. Upside surprise No. 2,
Philips (NYSE:
PHG) (
Cramer's Take), doesn't seem to do anything more than upside surprise No. 1,
Alcoa (NYSE:
AA) (
Cramer's Take). That's right, we got a quick run-up for Philips when it reported a nice profit, but no follow-through from the rest of the markets in Europe after this electronics company reported.
Why should there be, though? Philips might as well have said "this profit is a sham" from the commentary it put out --more firings, numbers down huge from last year, terrible outlook.
