The most prominent earnings reports on tap are Wednesday's results from Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY) and from Monsanto (MON). Here's what analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect to see.

Bed Bath & Beyond

During its fiscal fourth quarter, the nation's largest domestics retailer opened new stores and its CEO sold shares. Analysts anticipate that the New Jersey-based company will report per-share earnings of 97 cents, an increase of 11.3% from the same quarter of last year. The company also is expected to post revenue of $2.4 billion for the three months that ended in February, a 6.3% rise from a year earlier.

Continue reading Week in Preview: Bed Bath & Beyond, Monsanto and Pier 1 Earnings

Week in Preview: Bed Bath & Beyond, Monsanto and Pier 1 Earnings originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sun, 03 Apr 2011 12:30:00 EST. And this coming week's economic calendar for the U.S. starts off with the ISM nonmanufacturer's survey results for April and NAR's pending home sales for February on Monday morning. This glimpse at the service and housing sectors will be followed by March's consumer credit numbers Monday afternoon. Then things are pretty quiet until Friday's release of factory orders and wholesale trade numbers for February.

Between the Monday and Friday economic numbers will come the release on Tuesday of the minutes of the March 16 FOMC meeting, a record of the Fed's most recent thinking on monetary policy.

Continue reading The Week in Preview: A Quiet Start to the Cruelest Month

The Week in Preview: A Quiet Start to the Cruelest Month originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sun, 04 Apr 2010 12:30:00 EST. A year ago, PIR lost 33 cents per share in the fourth quarter. Moreover, the consensus estimate for the retailer's quarterly earnings checks in at 25 cents per share.

This wasn't the only news from PIR, as the company forecast fourth-quarter merchandise margins of 55.7%, which is better than last year's 44.3% and the Street's expectations. PIR's same-store sales also increased by 6.5%. A true bevy of good news, but we could see the jubilation tempered by the fact that PIR predicts its fourth-quarter revenue will total $396 million while expectations call for $406.02 million.
Continue reading Pier 1 Issues Healthy Fourth-Quarter Forecast

Pier 1 Issues Healthy Fourth-Quarter Forecast originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 04 Mar 2010 09:00:00 EST. So a question going in to FedEx's fiscal first-quarter report this week is whether the company is still a bellwether.

For the three months that ended in August, when FedEx opened distribution hubs in Chicago and Toledo and declared a quarterly dividend, analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are looking for it to report that earnings fell 60.2% from a year ago to $0.49 per share. That's also down 23.4% from the previous quarter, as well as less than the recently updated outlook. First quarter revenue is expected to be down 18.3% from a year ago to $8.2 billion.

Continue reading The week in preview: Is FedEx still a bellwether?

The week in preview: Is FedEx still a bellwether? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sun, 13 Sep 2009 12:30:00 EST. The company disclosed that it is negotiating with landlords in an effort to negotiate lower rent payments to help cope with its tanking sales. In the press release, Pier 1 noted that "The Company has begun negotiating with landlords to achieve rental reductions across the chain. These negotiations may lead to the execution of early termination agreements for up to 125 underperforming store locations, if rental reduction negotiations on those locations prove unsuccessful."
If an extremely large number of retailers do close, the job loss could be incredible. Troubled retailer Pier 1 (NYSE: PIR), which trades at $0.33, has more than 6,100 employees. Rite Aid (NYSE: RAD), which also trades at $0.33, has over 60,000. If several medium-sized to large store chains move into bankruptcy, hundreds of thousands of jobs will be at stake. This does not include more modest-sized operators.

The retail industry is critical to the American economy. If it falls apart rapidly, it helps put the recession into a deeper downward spiral. Retail employees lose jobs and then are no longer consumers. With fewer consumers, more retailers and other business fail. Tax income for municipal, state, and the federal governments is also undermined, putting pressure on government employment.

The jobless rate my be close to 7% now. The retail part of the economy could move that number up quite a bit all by itself.

This coming week should bring reports from more food-related companies, from cereal maker General Mills and food packager CongAgra to grocery chain Kroger, to the parent companies of restaurants Cracker Barrel, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Carl's Jr., and Hardees. The company is attempting a dramatic turnaround under the leadership of a new CEO after years of underperformance and tough competition from lower cost providers of similar products like Target (NYSE: TGT) and Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT).

Turnarounds are always tough; most of them have a way of not really turning around at all. A weak economy and cautious consumer spending could be enough to make a very tough turnaround nearly impossible.

It appears that more than a few investors are betting this turnaround will end badly -- roughly 20% of the float is short.
Pier 1 slides on downgrade -- more trouble to come? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 05 Feb 2008 11:47:00 EST.
Nine months into his first year as chief executive officer, retailing veteran Alex W. Smith has cut costs and slowed the pace of sales declines at the Fort Worth, Texas, company. Adding impulse items such as Halloween merchandise to storefronts, scrapping television ads in favor of spunky and targeted mailings, and implementing other changes have produced what Mr. Smith has called "seedlings of success." ... Couple those positives with recent insider buying and a coming show-and-tell by management, and some fans see a compelling case for the stock to double or triple within a couple of years.

I'll believe it when I see it. Much though I love Pier 1, the store just isn't as unique as it once was. Big box competitors like Target (NYSE: TGT) are offering very, very similar stuff -- for a lot less money. The Pier 1 brand probably still has some value. But buyout rumors have been circling for years as the stock has declined and so far nothing has come of it. And let's face it: You can only close so many stores, and watch your sales plummet as margins decline for so long before your brand starts to lose some of its equity.

Back in June, I wondered whether some kind of partnership with Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) could be beneficial. Wal-Mart needs some way to compete with Target for more upscale buyers, and perhaps a less-expensive line of Pier 1 products could help Pier 1 boost its sales -- the downside of course would be further erosion of the brand's equity, but many big-name brands offer off-priced products through the big boxes.

The purchase of new home furnishings is an easy expenditure for consumers to put off -- if people are anxious about their mortgage, or disheartened that their home isn't appreciating in value like it was a few years ago, that old couch starts to look a lot better.

All of this makes Pier 1 Imports (NYSE: PIR) look like a tough bet. The stock rallied last week on an analyst upgrade, but continues to face sales and margin pressures, in part because of lower-price competitors like Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT). The company is in the midst of an attempted turnaround but the combination of competitive pressures and an industry-wide slowdown that recently claimed Bombay could be too much for the company to handle.

In the most recent quarter, Pier 1 saw its sales decline 7%, and it's going to be hard to turn that around if the industry as a whole continues to sputter.

In June, I suggested that it might be time for Wal-Mart and Pier 1 to team up. if Pier 1 continues to struggle with sales and profitability, and Wal-Mart continues to struggle to reach the more upscale demographic Target (NYSE: TGT) has nailed, it's something that both parties might want to consider.

Housing woes hurt home decor stores; Pier 1 (PIR) and Wal-Mart (WMT) should team up originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 08 Oct 2007 13:15:00 EST. The company reported a net loss of 64 cents, well below the consensus, in addition to drops in comparable-store sales, total sales and merchandise margins.

Despite a string of poor fundamental results, the stock has seen some signs of life this year. The reason: pure takeover speculation. But after seeing quarter after quarter of dismal results, is anyone -- even cash-rich private equity -- going to bite? My thought is that if they were, they would have done it when the stock was below $6 a share. Now, even after a 3% drop today, the stock is trading above $8.

I'm sure somebody, somewhere that believes Pier 1 Imports is a good value play, but I would not want to be the one trying to bottomfeed here. There are better value plays and better retail plays to be found elsewhere.
Pier 1's earnings swim with the fishes originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 21 Jun 2007 14:03:00 EST.
