<br />
Any time the volatility skews above 1.00, it is an indication that calls are more expensive than puts. Typically, when calls are more expensive than puts, it means the demand for calls is greater than the demand for puts because investors believe the stock is going to rise in the future, and they want to take advantage of that movement by buying calls.<br />
<br />
The opposite is also true. Any time a volatility skews below 1.00, it is an indication that puts are more expensive than calls.<br />
<br />
<strong>Bullish Volatility Skews</strong><br />
<br />
Unisource Energy Corp. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/unisource-energy-corporation-hld/uns/nys" class="inlinked">UNS</a>)---part of the Electric Utilities industry---came in at the top with a volatility skew of 1.15. This shouldn't be a surprise as UNS is up 7.37 percent for the past month.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/04/unisource-energy-tops-bullish-volatility-skews-towers-watson-to/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Unisource Energy Tops Bullish Volatility Skews; Towers Watson Tops Bearish Skews</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/04/unisource-energy-tops-bullish-volatility-skews-towers-watson-to/">Unisource Energy Tops Bullish Volatility Skews; Towers Watson Tops Bearish Skews</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 04 Aug 2010 14:00:00 EST. This report is a compilation of anecdotal information on current economic conditions from each of the 12 Federal Reserve Bank districts, and it is released eight times a year. The data comes from interviews with business contacts, economists, market experts, and other sources. The June report is expected to show strengthening signs of expansion, though results could be mixed across the 12 districts.</p>

The Beige Book report in March suggested that, by most measures, the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/2009/03/04/u-s-economy-continues-to-deteriorate-latest-fed-beige-book-dec/">economy was continuing to deteriorate</a> and that prospects for near-term improvement was poor. But the April report showed that the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/04/15/closing-bell-when-less-bad-starts-looking-great-axp-dndn-g/">deterioration was beginning to slow</a> in some regions. Also, the <a href="http://aol.ccbn.com/economiceventdetail.asp?event=2039872&amp;client=aol">TIPP Economic Optimism Index</a> is scheduled to be released Tuesday, and the University of Michigan <a href="http://aol.ccbn.com/economiceventdetail.asp?event=2038737&amp;client=aol">Consumer Sentiment Index</a> comes out Friday. So by the end of the week, we could have a good gauge of the mood over the U.S. economy.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/06/07/the-week-in-preview-the-beige-book-and-other-mood-gauges/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The week in preview: The Beige Book and other mood gauges</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/06/07/the-week-in-preview-the-beige-book-and-other-mood-gauges/">The week in preview: The Beige Book and other mood gauges</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 07 Jun 2009 12:30:00 EST. <ul>
    <li><a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/amgen-inc/amgn/nas"><strong>Amgen Inc.</strong></a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/amgen-inc/amgn/nas">AMGN</a>) <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/12/30/amgen-offers-safety-growth-in-2009/">earnings growth</a> prospects for 2009 make the stock worth a look. </li>
    <li><a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/big-lots-inc/big/nys"><strong>Big Lots Inc.</strong></a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/big-lots-inc/big/nys">BIG</a>) offered <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/12/31/will-big-lots-make-a-comeback-in-2009/">no 2009 guidance</a> but may benefit from bankruptcies of other retailers. </li>
    <li><a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/cal-maine-foods-inc/calm/nas"><strong>Cal-Maine Foods Inc.</strong></a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/cal-maine-foods-inc/calm/nas">CALM</a>) <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/12/30/cal-maine-drops-on-q2-earnings-miss/">Q2 earnings fell</a> more than expected but revenue rose. </li>
    <li><a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/chevron-corporation/cvx/nys/option-chains"><strong>Chevron Corp.</strong></a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/chevron-corporation/cvx/nys/option-chains">CVX</a>) said it will soon post <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/12/30/options-update-volatility-decreasing-into-eps-reports-mos-cvx/">preliminary Q4 results</a> in the face of falling oil prices. </li>
    <li><a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/piedmont-natural-gas-company-inc/pny/nys"><strong>Piedmont Natural Gas Co. Inc.</strong></a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/piedmont-natural-gas-company-inc/pny/nys">PNY</a>) reported a <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/12/29/piedmont-natural-gas-sinks-on-disappointing-earnings-2009-outlo/">widened Q4 loss</a> while revenue improved. </li>

</ul>
<p>Also, a survey indicated that U.S. corporate profits in the fourth quarter probably <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/12/29/u-s-corporate-profits-probably-fell-for-6th-straight-quarter-s/">fell for the sixth straight quarter</a>. Interest cuts haven't helped bank earnings, will <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/12/31/finally-a-big-idea-from-the-fed/">the Fed buying mortgage-backed securities</a> do better? And, are <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/12/30/everyones-gotta-eat-right-food-stocks-may-not-be-as-defensive/">food stocks still a defensive play</a>?</p>

PNY reported a <a href="http://www.rttnews.com/ArticleView.aspx?Id=812140&amp;Category=Breaking%20News">widened fourth-quarter loss</a> of $13.2 million, or 18 cents per share, while revenue improved by 12% to $311.8 million. Gross margin for the period contracted from 29.1% to 28.1%.</p>
<p>Ahead of the report, analysts were expecting a more modest quarterly loss of about 13 cents per share, according to Thomson Financial. Piedmont's forecast for the next fiscal year also fell short of Wall Street's expectations; the company backed its fiscal 2009 guidance for earnings of $1.55 to $1.65 per share, compared to analysts' consensus estimate for earnings of $1.66 per share.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/12/29/piedmont-natural-gas-sinks-on-disappointing-earnings-2009-outlo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Piedmont Natural Gas sinks on disappointing earnings, 2009 outlook</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/12/29/piedmont-natural-gas-sinks-on-disappointing-earnings-2009-outlo/">Piedmont Natural Gas sinks on disappointing earnings, 2009 outlook</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 29 Dec 2008 13:29:00 EST. With Krispy Kreme also among the handful of companies scheduled to report this week, we may yet see whether consumers are turning to comfort foods in these uncertain times.</p>
<p><a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/campbell-soup-company/cpb/nys">Campbell Soup Co.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/campbell-soup-company/cpb/nys">CPB</a>), the world's biggest soup maker, is still expected by analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial to post net income of 25 cents per share (up 44.0% from a year ago) on revenue of $1.7 billion (up 7.4%). The Camden, N.J.-based company has just <a href="http://finance.aol.com/earnings/campbell-soup-company/cpb/nys/actuals-estimates">missed earnings estimates</a> in the past few quarters. Its long-term EPS growth forecast is 7.9%, which is less than the industry average, but about the same as rivals <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kraft-foods-inc/kft/nys">Kraft Foods</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kraft-foods-inc/kft/nys">KFT</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/heinz-h-j-co-united-states/hnz/nys">HJ Heinz</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/heinz-h-j-co-united-states/hnz/nys">HNZ</a>). The analysts' consensus recommendation is currently to <a href="http://finance.aol.com/earnings/campbell-soup-company/cpb/nys/analyst-recommendations">buy Campbell</a>.</p>
<p>Hip, Canadian apparel retailer <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/lululemon-athletica-inc/lulu/nas">Lululemon Athletica Inc.</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/lululemon-athletica-inc/lulu/nas">LULU</a>) is also anticipated to be a big earnings gainer when it reports this week. Net income is expected to come in at 13 cents per share (up 46.2% from a year ago) on revenue of $88.2 million (up 50.3%). <a href="http://finance.aol.com/earnings/lululemon-athletica-inc/lulu/nas/earnings-release">Lululemon met expectations</a> when it reported 12 cents per share in the previous quarter.
