Today we saw action fueled by earnings from banks and weakening consumer sentiment, but this also comes after a barely-down day and after an 800 point run in the last two weeks on the DJIA. Banks were soft on regulatory fears as well outlining hurdles ahead.
Here were today's closing bell levels:

Overseas markets were up on St. Patrick's cheers, or up on continued FOMC promises of keeping rates low. Then a lower producer price index sealed in the day. We are basically back to where the markets are just not wanting to trade off.
Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

MAJOR PAPERS:
- Troubled Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE: S) is searching for a replacement for CEO Gary Forsee, and expects to have a new person in place by December, reported the Wall Street Journal.
- Two Bear Stearns Companies (NYSE: BSC) collapsed mortgage related hedge funds, that lost $1.6B, have drawn an investigation from the U.S. attorney in Brooklyn, NY, reported the Wall Street Journal.
- The Financial Times reported that the U.K. economy will be affected by the global credit crisis, according to Chancellor of the exchequer Alistair Darling, who said that while the U.K. economy is in a strong position to ride out the impact, growth projections will be lowered from the current 2.5%-3%.

- Sotheby's (NYSE: BID) has benefited from Wall Street's equity market gains, with high-end investors piling money into art, and Rommel Dionisio of Wedbush Morgan Securities sees the stock going to $60 in a year.
- Amid concern that it might miss the Street's Q3 forecast, is Polycom (NYSE: PLCM) oversold at $26? Yes, says Greg MacArthur, president of investment outfit Viewpoint2000.

MOST NOTEWORTHY: EMC Corp (EMC), NetEase.com, Inc (NTES), Wireless Ronin Technologies (RNIN), Activision (ATVI) and GameStop Corp (GME) were today's noteworthy initiations:
- BMO Capital expects upside to EMC Corp's (NYSE: EMC) June quarter estimates, but only sees limited share upside from current levels. The firm started shares with a Market Perform rating and $21 target.
- Pali Research believes NetEase.com (NASDAQ: NTES) must address the discontinuity in its growth and started shares off with a Neutral rating.
- Barrington expects Wireless Ronin (NASDAQ: RNIN) to benefit from growth towards broadcasting to the outdoor component of out-of-home and views the company as an emerging growth opportunity that is starting with a strong technological base and management team. The firm started shares with an Outperform rating.
- First Albany initiated shares of GameStop (NYSE: GME) with a Buy rating, citing upside potential to 2008 estimates.
- Activision (NASDAQ: ATVI) was also initiated at First Albany, with a Buy rating, as the firm is expecting strong results and guidance...

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc (TTWO), Sony Corp (SNE), Sun Microsystems, Inc (SUNW), PetSmart, Inc (PETM) and Constellation Energy Group, Inc (CEG) were today's more notable initiations:
- Prudential started Take-Two Interactive Software (NASDAQ: TTWO) with a Neutral rating and $25 target, citing valuation and limited impact from GTA IV for the rating.
- Prudential believes Sony Corp (NYSE: SNE) is well-positioned to benefit from digital media revolution in consumer electronics and that operating margins will continue to improve; Sony was initiated with an Overweight rating and $62 target.
- Cowen views Sun Microsystems' (NASDAQ: SUNW) valuation full and initiated shares with a Neutral rating.
- Pali Capital initiated PetSmart, Inc (NASDAQ: PETM) with a Buy rating and $37 target, room for price optimization as their recent checks suggest that consumers prefer PETM, regardless of price.
- Credit Suisse initiated shares of Constellation Energy Group (NYSE: CEG) with an Outperform rating and $94 target.

- Stifel initiated several stocks in the network technology sector: Juniper Networks, Inc (NASDAQ: JNPR) was initiated with a Buy rating and $23 target, while Acme Packet, Inc (NASDAQ: APKT), Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO) and Polycom, Inc (NASDAQ: PLCM) were initiated with Hold ratings.
