You are probably wondering what is going on. While you weren't paying much attention, the price raw commodities surged in 2010. Corn, sugar, wheat, cotton, coffee and soybeans prices soared last year, as reported in the Wall Street Journal.

A confluence of factors pushed prices up. We had and still have demand explosion from China and India. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization's monthly food index which monitors a basket of commodities including meat, dairy and sugar rose for the sixth straight month to a record.

Continue reading Higher Commodity Prices Are Grabbing Your Money

Higher Commodity Prices Are Grabbing Your Money originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 03 Feb 2011 14:30:00 EST. The producer of poultry products did pretty well in terms of beating expectations, but the stock came under pressure anyway. At the time of this writing, shares were off by 3% to $41.18. Volume was significant.

According to Bloomberg, net income for fiscal Q4 calculated out to $2.08 per share. The overall consensus was set at $1.72 per share. Big difference. Investors should be impressed, correct?

Continue reading Sanderson Farms Down After Earnings Beat

Sanderson Farms Down After Earnings Beat originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 14 Dec 2010 15:40:00 EST. With less than three hours to go before the market closes its doors, shares of the company were up by 4.5%. The quote was $45.12.

That's pretty interesting considering that the shares were initially weak today after the third-quarter report. As this article over at TheStreet.com indicates, per-share profit came in well below Wall Street's expectations. The business generated $1.55 per share, a number that was a little over thirty cents light.
Continue reading Sanderson Farms Trading Up on Q3 News

Sanderson Farms Trading Up on Q3 News originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 23 Aug 2010 15:20:00 EST. When I last wrote about the company back in May, I found that its shares were under pressure after a quarterly report was issued. Today, the same thing has occurred: investors were getting rid of the stock upon a fresh round of earnings data. My condolences to those who own this name in their portfolio.

The results weren't as bad as the selling would make it seem. For the fiscal third quarter, the business made 65 cents per share versus 35 cents per share in the year-ago period. According to Reuters, adjusted profit of 67 cents per share beat projections by nine pennies. The actual press release shows an expansion in operating cash flow: $1.1 billion was booked this time around over the last three quarters; $684 million was recorded in the comparable frame.
Continue reading Tyson Foods Stock Sells on Q3 News

Tyson Foods Stock Sells on Q3 News originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 09 Aug 2010 17:00:00 EST. Last year at this time, Tyson earned 3 cents per share. This year, the food company, famous for its chicken brand, made 35 cents per share. Sales actually dipped a little under 3%, but management is diligently fighting the good fight when it comes to efficiencies. Both costs of sales and selling, general and administrative expenses went down.

According to Bloomberg, the adjusted income of 33 cents per share simply blazed past Wall Street's expectations. The call was for 22 cents per share. You've got to like that. Higher prices for poultry helped the quarter.

Continue reading Tyson Foods beats analyst expectations by wide margin

Tyson Foods beats analyst expectations by wide margin originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 04 Aug 2009 08:00:00 EST. It seems that there is a long standing feud over chicken imports to the US. According to Etter and Power, in 2006 the USDA issued a rule that permitted China to export cooked poultry products to the US as long as the raw poultry meat originated in the US. A bruhaha erupted, and lawmakers inserted a provision in the fiscal 2008 spending bill that prohibited processed chicken from being imported into the US.

Now, in retaliation, China is expected to ban imports of US chicken, a move that would cost US chicken exporters $370 million dollars over the next six months.

Smithfield Foods said it lost $12.6 million, or 9 cents per share, in its fiscal first quarter due in part to a $20.1 million write-down in the value of commodity contracts. The Smithfield, Va.-based company had reported a profit of $54.6 million, or 41 cents per share, a year ago.

Revenues rose 20% to $3.14 billion in the quarter. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters had forecast a loss of 4 cents per share on $2.87 billion in sales.

In addition to hurting from high costs for such ingredients as grain and fuel, Smithfield also faces an oversupply of meat on the market, which is keeping prices for pork lower. To help push prices up, meat producers such as Smithfield have announced intentions to cut supply.
