Analyst upgrades:

  • Citigroup upgraded Polaris Industries (NYSE: PII) to Buy from Hold after channel checks indicated the company's sales trends improved through September. The firm raised its target on shares to $49 from $33.
  • Jefferies upgraded Citrix Systems (NASDAQ: CTXS) to Hold from Underperform after channel checks indicated IT spending will be strong in the second half of 2009, but the firm finds the stock fully valued at current levels. Jefferies raised its target on shares to $40 from $32.
  • Pali Captital upgraded Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE: ANF) to Buy from Neutral on valuation and expectations that lower pricing and international growth will be catalysts going forward. The firm set a $45 price target on shares.
  • Plum Creek Timber (NYSE: PCL) was upgraded to Neutral from Underweight at JPMorgan.
  • Advanced Micro (NYSE: AMD) was upgraded to Buy from Neutral at UBS.
  • PPD Inc. (NASDAQ: PPDI) was upgraded to Outperform from Neutral at Baird.

Analyst upgrades, downgrades and initiations: AAPL, AMX, COST, KFT, LMT, RTP ...

Analyst upgrades:

  • Citigroup upgraded Kraft Foods (NYSE: KFT) to Buy from Hold as it believes the company's domestic retail business is improving while input cost inflation pressures are beginning to moderate. Citi raised its target on shares to $32 from $28.
  • Jefferies upgraded Sybase (NYSE: SY) to Buy from Hold as it believes slowing core IPG licenses in the second half of 2009 are now reflected in guidance. The firm raised its target on shares to $41 from $34.
  • Canaccord said Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) decision to ad video functionality into the iPod lineup is "very positive" as it expands its market into the low-end camcorder area. The firm, which upgraded shares to Buy from Hold and raised its target to $200 from $150, also views the launch of iPhone 3GS in all countries by the end of Q4 as another catalyst.
  • Rio Tinto (NYSE: RTP) was upgraded to Buy from Hold at Societe Generale.
  • Renasant Corp. (NASDAQ: RNST) was upgraded to Overweight from Equal Weight at Stephens.
  • America Movil (NYSE: AMX) was upgraded to Neutral from Sell at Pali Capital.

Analyst calls: MCO, VALE, GS, CSCO, PALM, LLY, JBHT, PTR

Analyst upgrades:
  • Deutsche Bank upgraded HealthSouth (NYSE: HLS) and Rehabcare (NYSE: RHB) to Buy from Hold after raising its Post Acute Care sector view to Positive from Neutral. The firm believes volumes and margin leverage can drive better than expected Q2 results and 2009 guidance. The firm raised its target on HealthSouth shares to $16 from $12 and on Rehabcare to $28 from $19.
  • Jefferies upgraded Moody's (NYSE: MCO) to Hold from Underperform to reflect stabilizing credit markets and its belief regulatory concerns are overstated. The firm raised its target on shares to $30 from $19.
  • Keefe Bruyette upgraded Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) to Outperform from Market Perform as it finds the stock inexpensive following the better than expected results. The firm has a $195 target on shares.
  • Vale (NASDAQ: VALE) was upgraded to Buy from Neutral at BofA/Merrill.
  • CNOOC (NYSE: CEO) was upgraded to Overweight from Equal Weight at Morgan Stanley.
  • International Game Tech (NYSE: IGT) was upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Janney Montgomery.

Analyst upgrades:
  • Barclays believes Procter & Gamble's (NYSE: PG) portfolio mix provides better leverage to stabilizing macro trends. The firm upgraded shares to Overweight from Equal weight and raised its target to $60 from $56. Note the firm downgraded Colgate (NYSE: CL) to Equal Weight from Overweight.
  • Deutsche Bank upgraded McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) to Buy from Hold as it finds the risk/reward on shares compelling at current levels and sees upcoming catalysts from McCafe and easing commodity pressures. The firm raised its target price to $65 from $60.
  • FBR Capital upgraded Talbots (NYSE: TLB) to Outperform from Market Perform to reflect an attractive risk/reward, reduced risk of a bankruptcy, and merchandise improvements. The firm raised its target price to $4 from $2.
  • Nokia (NYSE: NOK) was upgraded to Buy from Hold at Deutsche Bank.
  • Analog Devices (NYSE: ADI) was upgraded to Neutral from Underperform at Baird.

Analyst upgrades:
  • Jefferies upgraded Brocade (NASDAQ: BRCD) to Buy from Hold on expectations expanding OEM partnerships, new products and entry into new markets will drive long-term growth. The firm's channel checks indicate the first phase of an IBM (NYSE: IBM) deal for ethernet products will be announced next week. Jefferies raised its target price on the stock to $6 from $3.50.
  • JMP Securities upgraded Broadcom (NASDAQ: BRCM) to Market Perform from Underperform citing the potential settlement with Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM). The firm said Broadcom has far more to gain than Qualcomm has to lose.
  • Citigroup upgraded Air Products (NYSE: APD) and Praxair (NYSE: PX) to Buy from Hold on expectations that an improvement in customer operating rates will benefit gas companies. The firm raised its target price on Air Products to $70 from $55 and on Praxair to $79 from $63.
  • Royal Bank of Scotland upgraded BP Plc (NYSE: BP) to Buy from Hold to reflect its dividend yield at current levels.
  • Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) was raised to Outperform from Underperform at RBC Capital.
  • T. Rowe Price (NYSE: TROW) was upgraded at Sandler O'Neill to Hold from Sell.
  • Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) was lifted to Neutral from Underperform at Banc of America/Merrill.

Analyst upgrades: WFR, C and SANM

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Memc Electronic, Citigroup and Sanmina were today's noteworthy upgrades:
  • Citigroup upgraded shares of Memc Electronic (NYSE:WFR) to Buy from Hold on valuation as they believe the bad news is priced in following the company's quarter. The firm raised Memc's target to $65 from $64. JP Morgan upgraded shares to Overweight from Neutral on valuation.
  • Morgan Stanley upgraded Citigroup (NYSE:C) to Equal Weight from Underweight based on asset sales, improved top-line, and dividend.
  • Credit Suisse upgraded Sanmina (NASDAQ:SANM) to Outperform from Neutral citing valuation and margin traction. The firm raised Sanmina's target to $2.50 from $1.60. Cowen upgraded Sanmina to Outperform from Neutral following the Q3 report and guidance.
OTHER UPGRADES:

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Air Products, Eaton and Pharmaceutical Product Development were today's noteworthy downgrades:
  • Jefferies downgraded shares of Air Products (NYSE: APD) to Hold from Buy and lowered their target to $105 from $112 as they believe investors should wait for a better entry point given the company's more cyclical growth portfolio. They see downside risks to its electronics, chemicals and equipment businesses.
  • Eaton Corp. (NYSE: ETN) was downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Goldman due to its high exposure to the U.S. economy.
  • Baird downgraded Pharmaceutical Product Development (NASDAQ: PPDI) to Neutral from Outperform as its 2008 development guidance appears full and margins look full.
OTHER DOWNGRADES:
