Top Stock Picks '09: Amedisys (AMED)

This post is part of a special annual report -- Top Stock Picks '09 -- in which TheStockAdvisors.com asked 75 leading newsletter advisors to select their favorite investment for the new year.

"Amedisys (NASDAQ: AMED), a provider of home health services," notes Richard Moroney, whose Upside Stocks newsletter uses a quantitative system to select high growth, smaller cap issues.

"The company operates more than 500 locations, focuses on Medicare-eligible patients because of favorable reimbursement rates as well as a large and growing patient base.

"The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that some 8,000 Americans will become Medicare eligible each day beginning in 2011. By 2030, nearly 58 million baby boomers will be eligible for Medicare benefits.

"In 2007, nearly 90% of the company's revenue was derived from Medicare. "Acquisitions and market-share gains should fuel strong results. In addition, Amedisys should benefit from an aging population beset by chronic illnesses.

"The company has developed specialized services that focus on high-cost diseases and chronic conditions. An estimated one-half of the U.S. population will have a chronic condition in 2020, or nearly 160 million people.

Best Stocks for 2008: Forbes quant picks A. Schulman (SHLM)

For 25 years, Steven Halpern, editor of TheStockAdvisors.com, has surveyed the leading financial newsletter advisors asking for their favorite stocks for the coming year. This article is one of 100+ ideas in the Best Stocks for 2008 report.

"My top conservative idea for 2008 is A. Schulman (NASDAQ: SHLM), which makes high-performance plastic resins and compounds that are used by customers to produce everything from pens to artificial turf," says quantitative analyst Vahan Janjigian, editor of The Forbes Growth Investor.

"Almost three-fourths of fiscal 2007 sales (ended August 31) were generated from outside of North America. The firm makes resins that give plastics a specific color or physical property, such as conductivity.

"Its polyolefins units makes products such as interior trims for automobiles, toys, and office supplies and its engineered compounds division helps products maintain specific characteristics such as heat resistance, electrical conductivity, and high strength-to-weight ratios.

"SHLM is recovering from a difficult fiscal year. Management started several strategic initiatives to put profitability back on track. Most of these efforts focused on improving profitability in North America. Business units were reorganized with the aim of cutting costs.

Best Stocks for 2008: Credicorp (BAP) 'sparkles' through credit crisis

For 25 years, Steven Halpern, editor of TheStockAdvisors.com, has surveyed the leading financial newsletter advisors asking for their favorite stocks for the coming year. This article is one of 100+ ideas in the Best Stocks for 2008 report.

"Don't get scared off by the name at Credicorp (NYSE: BAP), my favorite 'home run' pick for 2008," explains John Reese, of Validea, a quantitative advisor service based on following the strategies of leading market gurus such as Peter Lynch and Warren Buffett.

"While US banks have been floundering amid the credit and subprime crises, this Peruvian upstart has sparkled, gaining 30% since mid-August.

"The holding company's businesses are involved in commercial banking, insurance, and investment banking, and, if subprime's got you down, consider this: Credicorp's main subsidiary, Banco de Credito del Peru, actually grew its mortgage business 8.2% in the third quarter as Peruvians' purchasing power continued to increase.

"What's more, Credicorp's fundamentals are so strong that it's one of just three stocks currently getting strong interest from three or more of my 'Guru Strategy' computer models -- those that I base on the writings of Peter Lynch, Martin Zweig, and The Motley Fool's David and Tom Gardner.
