Citigroup cited valuation as the main reason for the RBS upgrade. In the U.K., RBS finished the day nearly 1.3% higher.<br />
<br />
The brokerage firm said it downgraded Barclays because in its view "the 'new' theme that the first-half 2010 results highlighted is the effects that economic deleveraging is having on the loan books and revenues of the banks." Citigroup added that "A much higher proportion of revenues are linked to new business levels than are costs. To tackle this earnings threat, banks need a combination of pricing power, margin expansion and a strong cost story." In overseas trade, BCS finished the day more than 1% lower.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/10/citigroup-upgrades-royal-bank-of-scotland-downgrades-barclays/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Citigroup Upgrades Royal Bank of Scotland, Downgrades Barclays</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/10/citigroup-upgrades-royal-bank-of-scotland-downgrades-barclays/">Citigroup Upgrades Royal Bank of Scotland, Downgrades Barclays</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 10 Sep 2010 10:20:00 EST. That's because Canada's financial system is stable, it is rich with natural resources, and it can keep plugging along even if consumers don't open up their wallets again anytime soon.That means <a href="http://www.investorplace.com/stock-picks/canada-investments.html?cp=bloggingstocks&amp;cc=synd&amp;cs=investorplace">Canadian stocks</a> could be big in 2011.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/07/three-canadian-investments-for-2011/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Three Canadian Investments for 2011</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/07/three-canadian-investments-for-2011/">Three Canadian Investments for 2011</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 07 Sep 2010 15:40:00 EST. <br />
What's more, some of the banks may require state support, so says <a href="http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?hl=en&amp;sl=de&amp;u=http://www.i-cv.ch/files/4612/7476/3357/I-CV_Pressemitteilung_Bankenstudie_2010.pdf&amp;prev=/search%3Fq%3D%2522Independent%2Bcredit%2Bview%2522%26hl%3Den%26prmd%3Dn&amp;rurl=translate.google.com&amp;usg=ALkJrhj7NTRfVUO3buv14czSxgohksBy3Q">Independent Credit View</a>, a Swiss rating company that undertook the study.<br />
<br />
"Without state aid or debt restructuring these banks will hardly be able to raise capital," Christian Fischer, a partner and bank analyst at ICV<a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=aHnO_pWL.tRk&amp;pos=3"> told Bloomberg News Tuesday</a>, adding that he sees "massive dilution for existing shareholders."<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/26/global-banks-need-more-capital/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Global Banks May Need $1.5 Trillion More in Capital</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/26/global-banks-need-more-capital/">Global Banks May Need $1.5 Trillion More in Capital</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 26 May 2010 11:00:00 EST. <span style="font-style: italic;">TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says Dubai was blown out of proportion -- the system is now stronger and can handle it. </span><br /> <br />So I'm at the Apple store last night, the one I couldn't get into over the weekend because it was too crowded, and a guy stops and asks me, "Hey, how come you didn't talk about Dubai tonight?" <br /><br /> I shoot back, "'Cause I can't make any money off it." Yeah, he says, "but aren't we going to lose a lot of money off of it?" <br /><br /> To which I ask, "Tell me how Dubai's going to affect tomorrow's trading if it was yesterday's story? The show's worried about tomorrow, not today."<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/01/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-dubai-story-lacks-legs/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cramer on BloggingStocks: Dubai story lacks legs </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/01/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-dubai-story-lacks-legs/">Cramer on BloggingStocks: Dubai story lacks legs </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 01 Dec 2009 09:00:00 EST. <span style="font-style: italic;">TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says the futures suggest U.S. banks will trade in lock step with Europe, but he believes that linkage will be broken. </span><br /><br /> So, we're more Europe than Asia? Another rate hike from Australia, poor results from UBS and weak European markets weigh on sentiment.<br /><br />Monday was a volatile session. Stocks rallied in the morning following a surprise profit from Ford (NYSE: S) and an upbeat home sales reading, but mostly due to October's manufacturing index that jumped to its highest level in three and a-half years. That didn't hold up, though and the Dow skidded to negative territory only to bounce back later in the afternoon as buyers came back in.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/03/before-the-bell-futures-point-to-a-sharply-lower-start/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Before the bell: Futures point to a sharply lower start</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/03/before-the-bell-futures-point-to-a-sharply-lower-start/">Before the bell: Futures point to a sharply lower start</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 03 Nov 2009 07:45:00 EST. While Canadian banks on the whole held up better than their U.S. counterparts during the financial crisis, these five are expected to report that their earnings are still declining in the most recent quarter.</p>
<p>Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are looking for EPS for these banks to have fallen from 15% to 25% from a year ago. Their long-term EPS growth forecast is for between 10% and 12%, which is in the same range as U.S. rivals <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/jpmorgan-chase-and-co/jpm/nys">JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/jpmorgan-chase-and-co/jpm/nys">JPM</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wells-fargo-and-company/wfc/nys">Wells Fargo &amp; Co.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wells-fargo-and-company/wfc/nys">WFC</a>), but better than <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">Bank of America Corp.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">BAC</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys">Citigroup Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys">C</a>). Earnings multiples for these Canadian banks are 10x to 12x, but none of them have a First Call consensus recommendation is to buy. The Motley Fool, though, considers TD as <a href="http://www.fool.com/investing/value/2009/08/17/5-top-rated-value-stocks.aspx">a value stock</a> and RY a stock <a href="http://www.fool.com/investing/dividends-income/2009/07/28/4-star-stocks-poised-to-pop-rbc.aspx">poised to pop</a>. All of them are trading much closer to their 52-week highs than lows, and shares of all are up more than 100% since March lows.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/08/23/the-week-in-preview-canadian-banks-in-the-earnings-spotlight/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The week in preview: Canadian banks in the earnings spotlight</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/08/23/the-week-in-preview-canadian-banks-in-the-earnings-spotlight/">The week in preview: Canadian banks in the earnings spotlight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 23 Aug 2009 12:30:00 EST.
