<br />
"My pal Warren" has said for years that we should buy on fear and sell on greed. The toxic stock portfolio was a result of this sentiment.
<p>This is the fourth update to <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/19/buying-a-toxic-portfolio-bp-rig-c-gs-bac-ge/">my ranting eight months ago</a> that acquiring six of the most hated, and most highly traded stocks with constant negative headlines would outperform the overall market. The theory has born fruit as the toxic stocks are ahead and the difference is increasing over time.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/11/chasing-value-toxic-stock-update-4-bac-bp-c-ge-gs-rig/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value: Toxic Stock Update #4 -- BAC, BP, C, GE, GS, RIG</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/11/chasing-value-toxic-stock-update-4-bac-bp-c-ge-gs-rig/">Chasing Value: Toxic Stock Update #4 -- BAC, BP, C, GE, GS, RIG</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 11 Mar 2011 15:00:00 EST. Which stocks are being dumped? What are the new purchases?<br />
<br />
Just look at billionaire hedge fund manager John Paulson. Over the past couple of years, he has been a big holder of gold stocks. And yes, in light of the terrible plunge in the precious metal in January, investors are wondering if Paulson is still a bull. <br />

I am behind schedule, after publishing the first 5 earlier in the week (see: <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/05/chasing-value-2011-stock-picks-5-of-11/" title="View Chasing Value: 2011 Stock Picks -- 5 of 11 on BloggingStocks" target="_blank">Chasing Value: 2011 Stock Picks -- 5 of 11</a>). This year instead of starting completely anew, I am adjusting my 2010 picks. There is no sense in abandoning good ideas just because the calendar turned a page.</p>
<p>You will actually find support of running themes I have been writing about over the past few months. One of these is the idea of making a contrarian investment in a basket of stocks that have been both scalded and scolded in the headlines. Six stocks were included in such a group that I called the "toxic stocks" (see: <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/13/chasing-value-toxic-stock-update-3-bac-bp-c-ge-gs-rig/" title="View Chasing Value: Toxic Stock Update #3 -- BAC, BP, C, GE, GS, RIG on BloggingStocks" target="_blank">Chasing Value: Toxic Stock Update #3 -- BAC, BP, C, GE, GS, RIG</a>).</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/06/chasing-value-2011-stock-picks-6-7-8-9/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value: 2011 Stock Picks -- 6, 7, 8, 9</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/06/chasing-value-2011-stock-picks-6-7-8-9/">Chasing Value: 2011 Stock Picks -- 6, 7, 8, 9</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 06 Jan 2011 18:00:00 EST. This notion is continuing to work for what I called the toxic stock portfolio.</p>
<p>This is the third update to <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/19/buying-a-toxic-portfolio-bp-rig-c-gs-bac-ge/">my ranting five months ago</a> that six of the most reviled and most highly traded stocks featured by daily bad press as a group would outperform the overall market. It has, with the big winner rising from being one of the biggest losers.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/13/chasing-value-toxic-stock-update-3-bac-bp-c-ge-gs-rig/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value: Toxic Stock Update #3 -- BAC, BP, C, GE, GS, RIG</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/13/chasing-value-toxic-stock-update-3-bac-bp-c-ge-gs-rig/">Chasing Value: Toxic Stock Update #3 -- BAC, BP, C, GE, GS, RIG</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 13 Dec 2010 12:00:00 EST. Currently, intrade.com is projecting a 97% chance that the Republicans will take control of the House of Representatives and a 48% chance that they will win the Senate. What could a landslide win for the Republican Party mean for the stock market?<br />
<br />
Some observers are suggesting that gridlock in Washington, along with a more business friendly atmosphere, could be a catalyst for stock prices to rise. This, however, is offset by concerns about cuts in government spending. The private <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/economy/" class="inlinked">economy</a> is sputtering, and near-term spending cuts could have a detrimental effect on the recovery. Therefore, instead of focusing on the broader market, investors may want to look at some specific sectors that may benefit from a Republican victory.<br />
<br />
Three interesting areas are oil services, financials, and healthcare. The thinking is that some of the regulatory headwinds facing these sectors may be lifted if the political atmosphere in Washington <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/dundee-corp/dc%40/tor" class="inlinked">D.C.</a> changes. Some observers believe that a Republican-led House of Representatives will be able to chip away at some of the Obamacare legislation. This should benefit large pharmaceutical companies such as Merck (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/merck-and-co-inc-new/mrk/nys" class="inlinked">MRK</a>) and Pfizer (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/pfizer-inc/pfe/nys" class="inlinked">PFE</a>).<br />

Republicans are poised to gain control of the House of Representatives and gain governorships in Tuesday's mid-term elections. Also, the Federal Reserve is expected to announce another round of <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Quantitative%20Easing">quantitative easing</a> Wednesday, following the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Federal%20Open%20Market%20Committee%20-%20FOMC" target="_blank">FOMC</a> meeting. Major retailers are scheduled to report October <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/same%20store%20sales" target="_blank">same-store sales</a> Thursday, while the October unemployment rate, announced on Friday, is expected to remain at 9.6%.</p>
<p>Toyota's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/toyota-motor-corporation/tm/nys" class="inlinked" target="_blank">TM</a>) fiscal second-quarter results will be one of the highlights on the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/earnings/" class="inlinked" target="_blank">earnings</a> front this week. After three periods of way underestimating Toyota's earnings, have the analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters got it right this time? The stock sure could use a boost. Teva Pharmaceuticals (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/teva-pharmaceutical-industries-limited-american-depositary-shares/teva/nas" class="inlinked" target="_blank">TEVA</a>) is in a similar situation; i.e., high expectations for this week's quarterly results but a stock in need of a boost. I went on further to claim that the punishment was exaggerated and that this group would easily out perform the over all market.<br />
<br />
Normally, I would not post so soon but the market has done an about face (again) and I wanted to take a glance. The stocks I suggested buying were Bank of America (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">BAC</a>), Citigroup (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys">C</a>), General Electric (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/general-electric-company/ge/nys">GE</a>), BP (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/bp-p-l-c/bp/nys">BP</a>), Goldman Sachs (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/the-goldman-sachs-group-inc/gs/nys/classic-charts">GS</a>) and Transocean (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/transocean-ltd-switzerland-common-stock/rig/nys">RIG</a>).<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/05/chasing-value-toxic-stock-update-bac-bp-c-ge-gs-rig/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value: Toxic Stock Update BAC, BP, C, GE, GS, RIG</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/05/chasing-value-toxic-stock-update-bac-bp-c-ge-gs-rig/">Chasing Value: Toxic Stock Update BAC, BP, C, GE, GS, RIG</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 05 Aug 2010 15:00:00 EST. As a contrarian investor, I do buy on fear and sell on greed as "my pal Warren" has advised for many years. This has worked out to be very profitable over the past 18 months. However, in the past 30 days the financial stocks have dropped to second place in favor of oil and gas stocks.</p>
<p>I think the economic recovery is moving at a snail's pace, lowering anticipated demand for oil while gas was already depressed based on the same factors and the addition of numerous new large supplies. Add to this the mess in the Gulf of Mexico and the public's already negative sentiment about oil companies and you have the makings of depressed pricing in the sector.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/02/chasing-value-buffett-must-be-buying-oil/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value: Buffett Must Be Buying Oil</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/02/chasing-value-buffett-must-be-buying-oil/">Chasing Value: Buffett Must Be Buying Oil</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 02 Aug 2010 11:00:00 EST. While there are always plenty of great companies to invest in, I've chosen a group of stocks that everyone else actually hates.<br />
<br />
The stock market was none too pleased with the earnings reports from Bank of America (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">BAC</a>), Citigroup (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys">C</a>) and General Electric (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/general-electric-company/ge/nys">GE</a>). I was quite surprised that the trio, which are the most heavily traded stocks on the market, jolted investors as they did. I think all three are a buy.<br />
<br />
Not to leave out any of the recently orphaned stocks, let's add three more bad boys to the picture: BP (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/bp-p-l-c/bp/nys">BP</a>), Goldman Sachs (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/the-goldman-sachs-group-inc/gs/nys/classic-charts">GS</a>) and Transocean (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/transocean-ltd-switzerland-common-stock/rig/nys">RIG</a>). They have been hurt by the misdeeds of management, which resulted in crushing blows to shareholders. These three stocks are very scary: The prospects for a turnaround remain bleak in most everyone's eyes, with little chance of the negative headlines or business improvement changing the outlook anytime soon. Could the timing be right to buy these monsters too?<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/19/buying-a-toxic-portfolio-bp-rig-c-gs-bac-ge/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value: Buying a Toxic Portfolio -- BP, RIG, C, GS, BAC and GE</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/19/buying-a-toxic-portfolio-bp-rig-c-gs-bac-ge/">Chasing Value: Buying a Toxic Portfolio -- BP, RIG, C, GS, BAC and GE</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 19 Jul 2010 14:00:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/transocean-ltd/rig/nys" class="inlinked">RIG</a>) are currently trading near $47, but one investor is bracing for a drastic downside move from the security. On Wednesday, a long-term options trader picked up some plunge protection on RIG by purchasing a large number of deep out-of-the-money puts.<br />
<br />
Specifically, several large blocks totaling roughly 5,000 contracts traded near the ask price yesterday on RIG's January 2011 25-strike put. Implied volatility on the option rose 2% by the close, indicating rising demand for this LEAPS strike. Open interest climbed overnight by 4,710 contracts, confirming that these were newly opened bearish bets.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/01/traders-buy-plunge-protection-on-transocean-ltd/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Traders Buy Plunge Protection on Transocean Ltd.</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/01/traders-buy-plunge-protection-on-transocean-ltd/">Traders Buy Plunge Protection on Transocean Ltd.</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 01 Jul 2010 13:30:00 EST.
