The market wasn't taken by them. Looking at the extreme right side of the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/cvs-caremark-corporation/cvs/nys/tech-chart">chart</a>, it can be seen that the stock came under some pressure after the release. This afternoon, the shares are under further pressure: at the time of this writing, they were off by 1.1% to $32.55, with heavy volume backing the trade.<br />
<br />
Does it sound like the company missed the estimate attached to it? No, that wasn't the problem. According to the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/article/cvs-caremark-4q-profit-falls-2-percent/464013/">Associated Press</a>, adjusted profit came in at 80 cents per share, one penny ahead of the prediction.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/04/cvs-caremark-buy-after-latest-report/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CVS Caremark: Buy After Latest Report?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/04/cvs-caremark-buy-after-latest-report/">CVS Caremark: Buy After Latest Report?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 04 Feb 2011 15:30:00 EST. Sometimes you've just got to laugh when a stock that's trading around a dollar suddenly drops over 13%. That's exactly what the drugstore's shares did by the end of the day's regular session. It finished at a quote of 95 cents. And, as you might expect, volume was pretty significant.<br />
<p>
Who buys a stock like this? Clearly, someone braver than me. Adding this one to a portfolio is basically no different than playing the slots in Vegas. The <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/rite-aid-corporation/rad/nys/tech-chart">one-year chart</a> hasn't changed much since I discussed the company <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/23/rite-aid-smaller-loss-but-im-not-interested/">back in June</a>; it still tells a tale of volatility and downward momentum. It's not a ride I'm willing to take.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/24/rite-aid-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rite Aid Sold on Q2 News</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/24/rite-aid-earnings/">Rite Aid Sold on Q2 News</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 09:00:00 EST. At the time of this writing, the shares were higher by $1.34, or 4.4%. At a price of $31.94, they were trading well below the 52-week high of $38.27.<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/cvs-caremark-corporation/cvs/nys/tech-chart">one-year chart</a> is...interesting. I'm not sure an investor could look at it and confidently say with certainty where the stock is heading from here. However, for those who were already considering the company, they can at least be confident that they'd be buying lower instead of higher.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/28/cvs-caremark-up-on-earnings-news/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CVS Caremark Up on Earnings News</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/28/cvs-caremark-up-on-earnings-news/">CVS Caremark Up on Earnings News</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 28 Jul 2010 15:00:00 EST. I'm still not going to buy it. As I write this, the stock is up almost 7% on great volume. The quote? $1.08. Yep, it's one of those low-priced equities. <br />
<br />
The <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/rite-aid-corporation/rad/nys/tech-chart">one-year chart</a> relates a tale of volatility and risk. Nothing more than a vehicle for gambling, if you ask me. Wall Street players who buy Rite Aid are betting on a turnaround. I really don't see the pharmacy chain being worth the trouble right now on that count. Sure, you could invest in the concern and be surprised by a positive change in fortunes down the road, but what if that positive change doesn't occur? Well, the answer is, you'd incur opportunity costs for having capital tied up in a less-than-acceptable fundamental thesis.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/23/rite-aid-smaller-loss-but-im-not-interested/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rite Aid: Smaller Loss, but I'm Not Interested</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/23/rite-aid-smaller-loss-but-im-not-interested/">Rite Aid: Smaller Loss, but I'm Not Interested</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 23 Jun 2010 17:30:00 EST. My screen shows, at the time of this writing, the stock down 44 cents, or 1.2%, to $36.64.</p>
<p>That's not too bad for the kind of trading session we're having. I bet CVS would have been up today following its Q1 report had the market action been different. I know it's risen a lot over the last year, but such price action doesn't sway me in this case.</p>
<p>You've got to be careful when a company reports a loss, even if that loss is narrower than what was reported in the comparable period. In the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/rite-aid-reports-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-fiscal-2010-results/rfid314538044/?channel=pf">fiscal fourth quarter</a>, Rite Aid lost 24 cents per share. Last year at this time, the red ink came out to $2.67 per share. Yes, this is a vast improvement; same thing happened in the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/18/rite-aid-defeats-analysts-in-q3-but-investors-should-be-careful/">third quarter</a> back in December of last year.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/31/rite-aid-down-on-q4-report-avoid-it/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rite Aid Down on Q4 Report</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/31/rite-aid-down-on-q4-report-avoid-it/">Rite Aid Down on Q4 Report</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 31 Mar 2010 18:30:00 EST. <p>On a reported basis, net income increased three pennies to 68 cents per share. Sales increased 7%, and adjusted earnings per share from continuing operations (excluding, in addition, a penny per share relating to a tax benefit) came in at 78 cents -- good for a growth rate of over 11%. That bottom-line performance matched analyst projections, according to our <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/07/cvs-caremark-expected-to-post-higher-q4-profit/">earnings preview</a>.</p>
<p>As we all know, matching expectations is sometimes the death of a stock. The market has no conscience when it comes to mercilessly punishing an equity for not going beyond the call of the analysts. However, CVS actually did pretty well yesterday, rising 5% by the end of the session; the move was backed by healthy volume.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/09/cvs-caremark-long-term-bet-after-q4/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CVS Caremark: Long-Term Bet After Q4?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/09/cvs-caremark-long-term-bet-after-q4/">CVS Caremark: Long-Term Bet After Q4?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 09 Feb 2010 08:30:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/cvs-caremark-corporation/cvs/nys">CVS</a>), the largest retail pharmacy chain in the U.S., is scheduled to discuss its fourth-quarter financial results in a conference call Monday, Feb. 8, at 8:30 AM (ET). An audio webcast of the call will be available at the <a href="http://investor.cvs.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=99533&amp;p=irol-EventDetails&amp;EventId=2704887">company's website</a>.</p>
<p>During the three months that ended in December, CVS announced <a href="http://money.aol.com/rtn/pr/cvs-caremark-corporation-announces-new-authorization-of-repurchase-program-for-up-to-2-billion-of-common-stock/rfid267828588?channel=pf">share buybacks</a>, named <a href="http://money.aol.com/rtn/pr/cvs-caremark-names-new-chief-human-resources-officer/rfid279373041?channel=pf">a new head of HR</a> and provided <a href="http://money.aol.com/rtn/pr/cvs-pharmacy-and-minuteclinic-to-provide-h1n1-vaccinations-coast-to-coast/rfid283172923?channel=pf">H1N1 flu shots</a> nationwide. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are looking for earnings for that period of $0.78 per share. That compares with $0.65 per share in the previous quarter and $0.70 per share a year ago. Revenue for the fourth quarter is expected to be 8.6% higher than a year ago to $26.2 billion.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/07/cvs-caremark-expected-to-post-higher-q4-profit/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CVS Caremark Expected to Post Higher Q4 Profit</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/07/cvs-caremark-expected-to-post-higher-q4-profit/">CVS Caremark Expected to Post Higher Q4 Profit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 07 Feb 2010 15:40:00 EST. <p>Pharmacy sales had been fairly resilient of late, but the decline in the most recent month was attributed to the introduction of a growing number of generic drugs. This was indeed a good quarter.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/22/walgreen-achieves-impressive-growth-in-q1/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Walgreen Achieves Impressive Growth in Q1</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/22/walgreen-achieves-impressive-growth-in-q1/">Walgreen Achieves Impressive Growth in Q1</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 22 Dec 2009 17:30:00 EST. Although they did show improvement, I think most investors would be better off staying away from the stock.
<p>According to this summary at <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN1715713520091217?type=marketsNews">Reuters</a>, top-line sales decreased a little under 2%, and the loss per share came in at 10 cents. This was a lot better than the 30 cents per share lost in the comparable quarter. Expectations were for the red ink to be closer to 18 cents per share. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/18/rite-aid-defeats-analysts-in-q3-but-investors-should-be-careful/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rite Aid Defeats Analysts in Q3, but Investors Should Be Careful</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/18/rite-aid-defeats-analysts-in-q3-but-investors-should-be-careful/">Rite Aid Defeats Analysts in Q3, but Investors Should Be Careful</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 18 Dec 2009 16:30:00 EST. In fact, as <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/06/24/todays-big-stock-price-moves-on-big-volume/">Douglas McIntyre</a> observed, shares of Rite Aid were up 5% at one point during yesterday's session. However, the shares ended up losing their green status by the close of trading. Rite Aid actually lost 3% when all was said and done. What does it all mean? </p>
<p>Well, Rite Aid did beat analyst forecasts by a wide margin. The call was for a <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsNews/idUSN2454673420090624">loss of 13 cents</a> per share. Rite Aid lost only 6 cents per share once adjustments are made. Revenues dipped a little over 1%, and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/glossary/same%20store%20sales">same-store sales</a>, after excluding the effect of the Brooks Eckerd acquisition, increased 1.5%. Interestingly, the mix of this increase is as follows: the pharmacy sales went up 3.1% on a comparable basis, and the non-pharmacy sales went down 1.4% on the same basis. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/06/25/rite-aid-beats-analysts-but-not-right-for-me-yet/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rite Aid beats analysts, but not right for me yet</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/06/25/rite-aid-beats-analysts-but-not-right-for-me-yet/">Rite Aid beats analysts, but not right for me yet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 25 Jun 2009 09:00:00 EST.
