• JPMorgan upgraded Alliance Data Systems (ADS) to overweight from neutral to reflect potential upside to 2010 estimates. The firm raised its target on shares to $84 from $68.
• JMP Securities upgraded SVB Financial (SIVB) to outperform from market perform and has a $54 target on the stock. The firm believes industry conditions are improving and that the recent TARP repayment is a positive sign regarding credit and liquidity.
• Citigroup upgraded Agrium (AGU) to buy from hold on expectations that 2010 will bring a recovery in fertilizer volumes. The firm raised its target price on shares to $82 from $64.
• Edwards Lifesciences (EW) was upgraded to conviction buy from buy at Goldman.
• Barclays (BCS) was upgraded to buy from neutral at UBS.
• Tower Bancorp (TOBC) was upgraded to outperform from market.

• ING upgraded Roche (OTC: RHHBY) to Buy from Hold as it believes Roche will not pay more than $100/share for Genentech (NYSE: DNA) and that the Avastin adjuvant data due April 2009 provides significant upside potential.
  
• Oppenheimer upgraded Motorola (NYSE: MOT) to Outperform from Perform on valuation as it believes sentiment is at an all-time low and the stock has limited downside. The firm set a $5 target on shares.
  
• Morgan Stanley upgraded Comerica (NYSE: CMA) to Equal Weight from Underweight citing valuation that adequately reflects credit deterioration in its commercial-heavy loan portfolio and aggressive government action.

• Goldman upgraded Bed Bath & Beyond (NASDAQ: BBBY) to Buy from Neutral based on valuation and a potential margin rebound at Linens N' Things.
  
• Citigroup upgraded Rockwell Automation Inc. (NYSE: ROK) to Hold from Sell on valuation and believes expectations have been reset to a reasonable level. The company's target was lowered to $27 from $33.

MOST NOTEWORTHY:

• ThinkPanmure believes Corning (NYSE: GLW) is well-positioned to benefit from increased penetration of LCD panels into televisions, flat panel monitors, notebooks, and mobile handsets. Shares were initiated with an Accumulate rating and $31 target.
  
• Thomas Weisel said BTU International (NASDAQ: BTUI) is seeing strong order trends for the company's high margin solar sales in its in-line diffusion furnace and metallization products. The firm started shares with an Overweight rating and $15 target.
  
• RiskMetrics (NYSE: RMG) was assumed at JMP Securities with an Ootperform rating and $26 target. The firm expects RMG to benefit from greater focus on managing portfolio risk and on corporate governance issues.

• Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) was initiated at ThinkPanmure with a Buy rating and $29 target.

MOST NOTEWORTHY:

• Wachovia upgraded Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) to Outperform from Market Perform, as they believe Goldman has a superior capital position relative to competitors and will likely benefit more than any firm from Bear Stearns' (NYSE: BSC) collapse. They have a $180-$185 target range for the stock.
  
• Following Alexza Pharma's (NASDAQ: ALXA) Q4 report, JMP Securities said they have reduced concerns regarding Loxapine timelines and risks. The firm raised Alexza to Outperform from Market Perform.
  
• SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) was upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at Bernstein on valuation and a positive view on fundamentals.

• Tyson Foods (NYSE: TSN) was raised to Overweight from Equal Weight at Stephens.
• Citigroup upgraded Teekay Shipping (NYSE: TK) and General Maritime (GMR) to Buy from Hold.
  
• RiskMetrics (NYSE: RMG) was upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Banc of America.

With the turbulence in the markets, it was looking dicey for the RiskMetrics Group (NYSE: RMG) IPO. The company even priced its offering at $17.50, at the low end of its proposed $17-$19 range.

But RMG turned out to be a good deal for investors. RiskMetrics' stock price is now trading at about $23.

The company is the brainchild of JPMorgan (NYSE: JPM), which wanted to develop better ways to deal with risk. After all, the financial markets have become increasingly complicated - especially with the surge in derivatives.

To bulk things up, RiskMetrics purchased ISS, which provides research and voting services for corporate governance.

The upshot: RiskMetrics has about 3,500 customers. Revenues increased about 16% to $176 million for the first nine months of 2007.

However, perhaps the biggest boost for RiskMetrics came from announcement that Societe Generale lost $7.1 billion, which was the result of a nefarious trader. No doubt, the firm could have used some better risk management systems, huh?

The underwriters on the RiskMetrics IPO included Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs and Banc of America Securities LLC.
