Aaron Rents (RNT): Zacks sees resilient returns

"Aaron Rents (NASDAQ: RNT) is a new addition to the focus list that carries both fundamental and technical strength," says Michael Vodicka, an analyst with Zacks Elite Investment Research.

"The company is a specialty retailer of consumer electronic goods like stereos and televisions that owns or operates 1,545 stores in the United States and Canada. Aaron Rents was founded in 1955 and has a market cap of $1.38 billion.

"In spite of a short-lived drop in mid October, this stock has held up well in an environment where consumers are pulling back on discretionary spending. The big share-price rebound was predicated on the company's solid third-quarter results, reported in late October.

Analyst calls: CHS, CQB, CLWR, KO, K, ESLR, DT, FSLR, NBR

Analyst upgrades:
  • Cowen upgraded Aaron Rents (NYSE: RNT) to Outperform from Neutral and believes the company's business model is gaining momentum despite the difficult environment. The firm views valuation as attractive.
  • Citigroup upgraded shares of MedCath (NASDAQ: MDTH) to Hold from Sell on valuation following the recent sell-off. The company's target was lowered to $9 from $19.
  • Stanford upgraded AeroVironment (NASDAQ: AVAV) to Buy from Hold based on valuation and because they believe its visibility over the next year has improved.
  • Chiquita Brands (NYSE: CQB) was lifted to Buy from Hold at BB&T.
  • Chico's FAS (NYSE: CHS) was upgraded to Neutral from Sell at UBS.
  • FCStone (NASDAQ: FCSX) was raised to Strong Buy from Outperform at Raymond James.
Analyst downgrades:
  • RBC Capital downgraded Clearwire (NASDAQ: CLWR) to Sector Perform from Outperform based on reduced valuation parameters and lack of catalysts. The company's target was lowered to $9 from $15.
  • Kellogg (NYSE: K) and Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) were cut to Neutral from Buy at UBS.
  • Evergreen Solar (NASDAQ: ESLR) was downgraded at JP Morgan to Underweight from Neutral.
  • Deutsche Telekom (NYSE: DT) was downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Goldman and to Hold from Buy at Deutsche Bank.

Analyst initiations 4-02:07: MasterCard, CBS Corp & American Express initiated today

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Three consumer financial services companies, CBS Corp (CBS) and Dress Barn, Inc (DBRN) were today's noteworthy initiations:
  • Calyon initiated three consumer financial services companies:
    • American Express Co (NYSE: AXP) was initiated with a Buy rating and $67 target, based on valuation.
    • Capital One Financial Corp (NYSE: COF) was initiated with an Add rating, as the firm believes shares should be valued in-line with comparable banks, but feels the best investors should hope for is $90/share by year-end given the current market conditions.
    • MasterCard Inc (NYSE: MA) was started with an Add rating and $123 target, as the firm believes shares should perform well in an environment in which concerns over credit risk remain paramount.
  • CBS Corp (NYSE: CBS) was initiated with an Outperform rating at Wachovia, which expects accelerated growth in 2008.
  • CIBC started Dress Barn Inc (NASDAQ: DBRN) with a Sector Performer rating, citing valuation.
