Today was mired by awful spending and income data as many are actually now not believing that high GDP figure from yesterday. Earnings were virtually the same as earnings tend to beat estimates but because of cost cutting.

Analyst upgrades:

  • Jefferies upgraded Consolidated Edison (NYSE: ED) to Buy from Hold on expectations the company will be able to reach a settlement with the New York PSC Staff that will provide benefits to both ratepayers and shareholders. The firm raised its target on shares to $46 from $40.50.
  • Keefe Bruyette upgraded Public Storage (NYSE: PSA) to Market Perform from Underperform to reflect the company's balance sheet, industry leading position, and potential for accretive acquisitions. The firm raised its target on shares to $75 from $57.
  • JPMorgan upgraded Big Lots (NYSE: BIG) to Overweight from Neutral to reflect valuation and industry data points that suggest a pick-up in discretionary spending. The firm has a $30 target on the stock.
  • Alcoa (NYSE: AA) was upgraded to Buy from Hold at Deutsche Bank.
  • East West Bancorp (NASDAQ: EWBC) was upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at Keefe Bruyette.
  • Bronco Drilling (NYSE: BDC) was upgraded to Neutral from Sell at UBS.

Inferential Focus, Inc. was the subject of Barron's interview this past weekend. This research driven company combs the world looking for new investment trends.

One emerging trend that could prove profitable for investors is the Department of Defense's need for a new generation of military satellites and communications networks in general. Technology exists, and could easily get into the hands of potential enemies, that can jam communications between U.S. spacecraft and ground stations by messing up the current DOD satellites that serve as central communications point for all these devices. A simple ground station based in any country could potentially mess up the communications of our military.

To solve this potential problem, the DOD has embarked on a $34 billion project to build a whole new global networking system similar to the Internet called GIG, or Global Information Grid. The DOD's goal is to make this network the most secure communications network ever to exist.

The companies that are going to benefit from this build-out are Globecomm Systems Inc (NASDAQ: GCOM), SAIC Inc (NYSE: SAI) and Radvision Ltd (NASDAQ: RVSN).   • The Wall Street Journal (subscription required) reported that the Bush administration has agreed to join in regional talks with Iran and Syria over Iraq, which are being launched by the Iraqi government next month.
  • Also in the Wall Street Journal, billionaire investor Carl Icahn is pushing Blockbuster Inc's (NYSE: BBI) board to withhold some of CEO John Antioco's $7.6 million bonus.
  • In what could be good news for Merck & Co Inc's (NYSE: MRK) Gardasil vaccine, a study suggested the prevalence of HPV, which can cause cervical cancer, is greater than previous estimates had suggested, reported the Wall Street Journal.
  • According to the Financial Times (subscription required), Russia has increased the pressure on a key asset held by TNK-BP, BP p.l.c. ADS's (NYSE: BP) Russia venture, as BP CEO Lord Browne arrived in Moscow for talks of a possible transfer of part of a key asset to the state.

The Israeli stock market has been reaching record highs as economic growth has been strong. Despite today's GDP report showing a sharp drop due to the summer war, the Tel-Aviv Stock Exchange rebounded finishing the day on a positive note.

Some Israeli companies listed on the NASDAQ are having quite the day:

Orckit Communications Ltd. (NASDAQ:ORCT) is a manufacturer of telecommunications networking equipment. ORCT shares are up more than 9% today. Rumors in Israeli newspapers mention the company gaining a new important client in Asia. Market cap: $147.7 million. 52-week range: $6.75-$31.22. Afternoon price: $11.36.

NICE Systems Ltd. (NASDAQ:NICE) shares are up more than 5.5%. NICE makes data recording products for financial institutions and other companies to monitor interactions with their customers. Market cap: $1.1 billion. 52-week range: $21.55-$32.80. Afternoon price: $32.45.
