The producer of poultry products did pretty well in terms of beating expectations, but the stock came under pressure anyway. At the time of this writing, shares were off by 3% to $41.18. Volume was significant.<br />
<p>
According to <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-12-14/sanderson-farms-4q-profit-more-than-doubles.html">Bloomberg</a>, net income for fiscal Q4 calculated out to $2.08 per share. The overall consensus was set at $1.72 per share. Big difference. Investors should be impressed, correct?</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/14/sanderson-farms-down-after-earnings-beat/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sanderson Farms Down After Earnings Beat</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/14/sanderson-farms-down-after-earnings-beat/">Sanderson Farms Down After Earnings Beat</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 14 Dec 2010 15:40:00 EST. With less than three hours to go before the market closes its doors, shares of the company were up by 4.5%. The quote was $45.12.<br />
<br />
That's pretty interesting considering that the shares were initially weak today after the third-quarter report. As this article over at <a href="http://www.thestreet.com/story/10841953/1/summer-heat-wilts-sanderson-farms-profit.html?cm_ven=GOOGLEFI">TheStreet.com</a> indicates, per-share profit came in well below Wall Street's expectations. The business generated $1.55 per share, a number that was a little over thirty cents light.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/23/sanderson-farms-trading-up-on-q3-news/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sanderson Farms Trading Up on Q3 News</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/23/sanderson-farms-trading-up-on-q3-news/">Sanderson Farms Trading Up on Q3 News</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 23 Aug 2010 15:20:00 EST. The brokerage gave <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/tyson-foods-downgraded-to-neutral-at-jp-morgan-2009-11-11-73950">four reasons</a> for the downgrade: valuation, recent rises in corn and hog prices, a looming supply increase from competitor Sanderson Farms (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/sanderson-farms-inc/safm/nas">SAFM</a>), and uncertainty from Pilgrim's Pride. <br /><br />All of these reasons are perfectly valid for the downgrade, but I want to focus on the valuation aspect of the downgrade. Technically, TSN faces overhead resistance in the $14 region, which is significant as the shares are currently ascending through the upper $12 region. The $14 level spurned the shares earlier this year, sending them into a steady decline back to support at the $11 region.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/11/tyson-foods-downgraded-by-j-p-morgan/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tyson Foods downgraded by JPMorgan</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/11/tyson-foods-downgraded-by-j-p-morgan/">Tyson Foods downgraded by JPMorgan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 11 Nov 2009 10:00:00 EST. While Canadian banks on the whole held up better than their U.S. counterparts during the financial crisis, these five are expected to report that their earnings are still declining in the most recent quarter.</p>
<p>Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are looking for EPS for these banks to have fallen from 15% to 25% from a year ago. Their long-term EPS growth forecast is for between 10% and 12%, which is in the same range as U.S. rivals <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/jpmorgan-chase-and-co/jpm/nys">JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/jpmorgan-chase-and-co/jpm/nys">JPM</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wells-fargo-and-company/wfc/nys">Wells Fargo &amp; Co.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wells-fargo-and-company/wfc/nys">WFC</a>), but better than <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">Bank of America Corp.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">BAC</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys">Citigroup Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys">C</a>). Earnings multiples for these Canadian banks are 10x to 12x, but none of them have a First Call consensus recommendation is to buy. The Motley Fool, though, considers TD as <a href="http://www.fool.com/investing/value/2009/08/17/5-top-rated-value-stocks.aspx">a value stock</a> and RY a stock <a href="http://www.fool.com/investing/dividends-income/2009/07/28/4-star-stocks-poised-to-pop-rbc.aspx">poised to pop</a>. All of them are trading much closer to their 52-week highs than lows, and shares of all are up more than 100% since March lows.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/08/23/the-week-in-preview-canadian-banks-in-the-earnings-spotlight/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The week in preview: Canadian banks in the earnings spotlight</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/08/23/the-week-in-preview-canadian-banks-in-the-earnings-spotlight/">The week in preview: Canadian banks in the earnings spotlight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 23 Aug 2009 12:30:00 EST. But it may be the only one that does, as at least two of the Canadian banks scheduled to report fourth-quarter numbers this week have already released preliminary results that warn of lower earnings due to debt write-downs and trading losses.</p>
<p>Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect Toronto-based <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/canadian-imperial-bank-of-commerce/cm/nys">Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/canadian-imperial-bank-of-commerce/cm/nys">CM</a>) to post earnings 42.6% lower than a year ago, or $1.28 per share. CIBC beat estimates by a penny in the third quarter, but missed by a penny in the period before that. The bank faces <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/qp/pr/_a/brower-piven-encourages-investors-who/rfid144942732">a class-action lawsuit</a> related to investments in collateralized debt obligations consisting of U.S. subprime mortgages. Shares have climbed 20.7% from a recent 52-week low of $39.52, but are down 37.8% in the past three months. </p>
<p><a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-toronto-dominion-bank/td/nys">Toronto Dominion Bank</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-toronto-dominion-bank/td/nys">TD</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bank-of-nova-scotia-halifax/bns/nys">Bank of Nova Scotia</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bank-of-nova-scotia-halifax/bns/nys">BNS</a>), and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/royal-bk-cda-montreal-que/ry/nys">Royal Bank of Canada</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/royal-bk-cda-montreal-que/ry/nys">RY</a>) are expected to report more modest earnings declines of $1.01 per share, $0.73 per share, and $0.83 per share, respectively. All three Toronto-based banks topped estimates in the third quarter. Toronto Dominion and RBC have recently announced plans to <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsnews/idCAN2452730420081124?rpc=33">offer shares in order to raise capital</a>. <p><strong>Smithfield Foods</strong> said it lost $12.6 million, or 9 cents per share, in its fiscal first quarter due in part to a $20.1 million <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/_a/hog-producer-smithfield-foods-swings-to/n20080826103909990012?cid=1183">write-down in the value of commodity contracts</a>. The Smithfield, Va.-based company had reported a profit of $54.6 million, or 41 cents per share, a year ago.</p>
<p>Revenues rose 20% to $3.14 billion in the quarter. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters had forecast a loss of 4 cents per share on $2.87 billion in sales.</p>
<p>In addition to hurting from high costs for such ingredients as grain and fuel, Smithfield also faces an oversupply of meat on the market, which is keeping prices for pork lower. To help push prices up, meat producers such as Smithfield have announced intentions to cut supply.</p>
<p>Shares of Smithfield fell 88 cents, or 3.7%, to $22.71 in morning trading. That's up from a 52-week low of $16.61 in early July, but shares have fallen about 21% since the beginning of the year.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/08/26/feed-prices-put-the-squeeze-on-meat-producers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Feed prices put the squeeze on meat producers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/08/26/feed-prices-put-the-squeeze-on-meat-producers/">Feed prices put the squeeze on meat producers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 26 Aug 2008 14:55:00 EST.
