Analyst upgrades, downgrades and initiations: DRI, INTC, PALM, RSH, TXN, VZ ...

Analyst upgrades:

  • Verizon (NYSE: VZ) was upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at Wells Fargo, which believes Verizon wireline margins troughed in Q3 and that Street estimates have been reset to more achievable levels.
  • Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) was upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at FBR Capital, which believes the company is gaining analog market share and shares are attractively valued at current levels. The firm maintains a $31 price target.
  • Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) was upgraded at Wells Fargo to Outperform from Market Perform. The firm believes this year's run-up in the stock was primarily due to the company's spin-off of MSG, but the firm believes the stock can rise further based on fundamentals.
  • Cabot Oil & Gas (NYSE: COG) was upgraded to Overweight from Neutral at JPMorgan following the company's Q3 results due to valuation and its above-average growth. The firm raised its target to $51.50 from $47.
  • RadioShack (NYSE: RSH) was upgraded to Hold from Underweight at KeyBanc, which said that its recovering sales trends were encouraging.
  • Travelzoo (NASDAQ: TZOO) was upgraded to Outperform from Neutral at Wedbush as it believes the divestiture of its Asian business coupled with growth in its Fly.com unit will drive 2010 growth. The firm raised its target to $17 from $13.

  • Keefe Bruyette upgraded Intercontinental Exchange (NYSE: ICE) to Outperform from Market Perform on expectations that derivatives trading will increase in the coming quarters.
  • NutriSystem (NASDAQ: NTRI) was upgraded to Buy from Neutral by Janney Montgomery, which believes that the company's earnings have hit bottom, while the company could report better-than-expected Q1 results.
  • Harley-Davidson (NYSE: HOG) was upgraded to Outperform from Sector Perform at RBC Capital. The firm thinks the company is an early-cycle story that has significant upside potential.
  • UBS upgraded Walgreen (NYSE: WAG) to Buy from Neutral citing cost cutting efforts and slowing store growth.
  • Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) was upgraded to Buy from Hold at Benchmark Co.
  • Safeway (NYSE: SWY) was upgraded to Buy from Hold by BB&T.
  • Needham upgraded Targacept (NASDAQ: TRGT) to Buy from Hold.

Analyst upgrades:
  • Citigroup upgraded Sunoco Logistics (NYSE: SXL) to Buy from Hold on valuation and raised its target on shares to $60 from $56.50. The firm sees better value in Sunoco Logistics than Enbridge Energy Partners (NYSE: EEP), which it downgraded to Hold.
  • BofA/Merrill believes Raytheon (NYSE: RTN) offers the most potential upside in the larget cap defense sector. The firm upgraded shares to Buy from Neutral and has a $62 target on the stock.
  • Roth Capital upgraded Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) to Buy from Hold based on seasonality, multiple product cycles, and valuation. Roth's target remains $15.
  • Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL) was upgraded to Buy from Hold at Societe Generale.
  • EnerNOC (NASDAQ: ENOC) was upgraded to Outperform from Neutral at RW Baird.
  • American Express (NYSE: AXP) was upgraded to Neutral from Underweight at JP Morgan.

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Scientific Games, COTT Corp and Houston Wire & Cable were today's noteworthy upgrades:
  • Morgan Stanley upgraded Scientific Games (NASDAQ: SGMS) to Overweight from Equal Weight as they believe investors are underestimating the company's opportunity in China and sees potential upside to estimates.
  • CIBC upgraded COTT Corp (NYSE: COT) to Sector Outperformer from Sector Performer citing the company's re-focus on Retail Brands and adding talent to the board.
  • William Blair raised Houston Wire & Cable (NASDAQ: HWCC) to Outperform from Market Perform on valuation and the company's continued large project growth.
OTHER UPGRADES:

Analyst upgrades 3-05-07: Apple upgraded to Overweight at Prudential

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Some of today's notable upgrades were Apple Inc (AAPL), Comcast Corp (CMCSA) and Crosstex Energy LP (XTEX):
  • Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL) was upgraded to Overweight from Neutral at Prudential and raised their target to $105 from $100 after their checks indicated a late March launch of Leopard, which is sooner than expected. Prudential believes Leopard will serve as a catalyst for Mac sales.
  • Matrix USA upgraded shares of Comcast Corp (NASDAQ: CMCSA) to Hold from Sell as they believe the successful roll out of "triple play" product offering is driving sales growth.
  • Crosstex Energy LP (NASDAQ: XTEX) was upgraded to Neutral from Underperform at Credit Suisse based on valuation.
OTHER UPGRADES:
  • Citigroup upgraded shares of Seagate Technology Holdings (NYSE: STX) to Buy from Hold on valuation as they believe Friday's sell-off on concerns that Apple will use NAND Flash rather than disk drives in the next-generation video iPod was overdone. Citigroup doubts Apple will broadly move to NAND flash this year.
  • Jefferies upgraded shares of Universal Health Services Inc (NYSE: UHS) to Buy from Hold with a $67 target as they believe industry fundamentals are strong for behavioral health and the valuation is attractive at current levels.
  • Brean Murray upgraded shares of Scientific Games Corp (NASDAQ: SGMS) to Hold from Sell. The firm does not expect Scientific Games to hit its 2008 guidance of $2.00, but recognizes the long-term growth prospects should begin to flow to the bottom line.
  • Credit Suisse upgraded the Chicago Mercantile Exchange Holdings Inc (NYSE: CME) to Outperform from Neutral on valuation.
  • Baird upgraded Thomas Properties Group (NASDAQ: TPGI) to Outperform from Neutral.
  • Bear Stearns upgraded Group Danone ADS (NYSE: DA) to Outperform from Peer Perform.

Analyst initiations 12-13-06: MasterCard and American Express

MOST NOTEWORTHY: MasterCard (MA), American Express (AXP), Boyd Gaming (BYD) and Overstock.com (OSTK) were the most notable companies on the initiation list today:

  • Keefe Bruyette initiated MasterCard Inc. (NYSE:MA) with an Underperform and an $88 target, citing valuation, and American Express Co. (NYSE:AXP) with an Outperform rating and $72 target;
  • Coverage of Boyd Gaming Inc. (NYSE:BYD) was resumed with a Buy rating and $67 target, as the firm believes the company's assets are undervalued and investors will look at Boyd as a potential candidate to go private;
  • Overstock.com Inc. (NASDAQ:OSTK) was initiated with a Sell rating and $14 target at First Albany.

OTHER INITIATIONS:

  • BMO Capital initiated Harley-Davidson Inc. (NYSE:HOG) with a Market Perform and $70 target on valuation.
  • Susquehanna initiated The Knot Inc. (NASDAQ:KNOT) with a Positive rating, citing the recent buyback and cash infusion; the firm says Knot has an opportunity to capitalize on the growing value of quality online content and favorable sector trends.
  • Scientific Games Corp. (NASDAQ:SGMS) was initiated at Bear Sterns with a Peer Perform rating, citing valuation.
