Analyst upgrades:

  • Keefe Bruyette upgraded Popular (NASDAQ: BPOP) to Outperform from Market Perform as it believes the issuance of new common stock in exchange for outstanding preferred and trust preferred stock is a net positive. The firm has a $3.50 target on the stock.
  • Merriman upgraded Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ: SMCI) to Buy from Neutral as if finds the currrent valuation compelling and believes the company should directly benefit from improving IT budgets. The firm thinks fair value is in the $9.11-$11.13 range.
  • Kaufman Bros. upgraded Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) to Buy from Hold after its proprietary survey indicated the company is well positioned longer term. The firm finds the valuation on shares attractive at current levels and raised its target price to $53 from $48.
  • Taleo (NASDAQ: TLEO) was upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Janney Montgomery.
  • Boardwalk Pipeline (BWP) was upgraded to Neutral from Underperform at BofA/Merrill.
  • Lloyds Banking (NYSE: LYG) was upgraded to Buy from Hold at RBS.

Analyst upgrades, downgrades and initiations: GOOG, AAPL, CELG, NFLX ...

Analyst upgrades:
  • Merriman upgraded shares of Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) to Neutral from Sell as they believe consensus estimates for Q4 and FY09 are no longer too high. In addition, the firm believes Google's slowing capex spend will improve margins and their recent channel checks indicate the company's ad coverage has increased significantly during Q4.
  • Oppenheimer upgraded shares of Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) to Outperform from Perform following yesterday's disclosures regarding Steve Jobs' health. The firm has a $135 price target on Apple shares.
  • UBS upgraded BMC Software (NYSE: BMC) to Buy from Neutral and raised its target to $31 from $28 citing easier booking comps in the March quarter.
  • YRC Worldwide (NASDAQ: YRCW) was raised to Market Perform from Underperform at Wachovia.
  • Goldman removed Hewitt (NYSE: HEW) from its Conviction Sell List.
Analyst downgrades:
  • Stephens downgraded Emergency Medical Services (NYSE: EMS) to Equal Weight from Overweight on valuation, as they believe the stock is fairly valued at current levels. The firm maintains a $39 price target.
  • Merriman downgraded Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ: SMCI) to Neutral from Buy after Super Micro pre-announced a Q2 miss to reflect the company's "challenging" outlook.
  • Baird downgraded Celgene (NASDAQ: CELG) to Neutral from Outperform citing Revlimid growth concerns following their most recent survey and potential pressures on the European business and on Thalomid.
  • Medtronic (NYSE: MDT) was lowered to Market Perform from Outperform at Leerink.
  • Intercontinental Exchange (NYSE: ICE) was cut at Goldman to Neutral from Buy.
  • Devon Energy (NYSE: DVN) was downgraded to Equal Weight from Overweight at Barclays.
Analyst initiations:
  • Merriman believes Itron (NASDAQ: ITRI) is well-positioned to benefit from the upgrade to Advanced Metering Infrastructure by tier one utilities and finds the stock attractively valued. Shares were initiated with a Neutral rating.
  • Oppenheimer assumed Jones Lang LaSalle (NYSE: JLL) with a Perform rating and expects the company's growth to slow in 2009 given global credit concerns and the economic slowdown.
  • Citigroup started Telmex (NYSE: TMX) with a Sell rating and $15 target. The firm believes the company's inability to offer 3-play services could lead to accelerated market share loss in 2009.
  • Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) was initiated at Janney Montgomery with a Neutral rating and $31 fair value estimate.
  • Arthur J. Gallagher (NYSE: AJG) was initiated with a Neutral rating at Piper Jaffray.
  • Jesup & Lamont assumed UTi Worldwide (NASDAQ: UTIW) with a Buy rating and $18 target.

Analyst initiations: SMCI, GLW, VRTX, CVC, SIMO, BCO

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Super Micro Computer, Corning and Vertex Pharmaceuticals were today's noteworthy initiations:
  • Merriman believes Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ: SMCI) is a unique value in the Data Center sector and thinks it could trade to a range of $10-$12 in the near-term. Shares were initiated with a Buy rating.
  • Citigroup started Corning (NYSE: GLW) with a Hold rating and $23.50 target. The firm sees limited upside given the risks to LCD glass demand.
  • Vertex Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: VRTX) was assumed with an Overweight rating and $57 target at Thomas Weisel, as they are positive on its telaprevir opportunity.
OTHER INITIATIONS:
  • Lehman reinitiated Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) with an Equal Weight rating.
  • Silicon Motion (NASDAQ: SIMO) was initiated at Cowen with an Outperform rating.
  • Brinks (NYSE: BCO) was initiated with a Positive rating at Susquehanna.

Analyst initiations 5-09-07: ADBE, ADSK, DAL and DSX

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Delta Air Lines (DAL), Diana Shipping Inc (DSX), Adobe Systems Inc (ADBE), Eagle Materials, Inc (EXP), ACR Group (BRR) and Autodesk, Inc (ADSK) were today's noteworthy initiations:
  • Goldman is positive on Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL), starting shares with a Buy rating and $25 target based on above average growth, best-in-class unit costs, free cash flow and less labor cost risk.
  • Diana Shipping (NYSE: DSX) was started at JP Morgan with an Overweight rating based on valuation and positioning. Lazard started Diana with a Buy rating, expecting demand for dry bulk shipping will outperform supply through 2010.
  • Soleil expects Adobe Systems (NASDAQ: ADBE) recently released Creative Suite 3 to be the near-and-medium term growth driver and started shares with a Buy rating.
  • JP Morgan started Eagle Materials Inc (NYSE: EXP) with an Underweight rating, expecting a decline in wallboard industry profitability due to increased capacity and lower demand.
  • B. Riley started ACR Group (AMEX: BRR) with a Buy rating calling the stock "cheap."
  • Soleil believes a catch up on the Autodesk's (NASDAQ: ADSK) SEC filings and a strong Q1 will prove near-term catalysts and started shares off with a Buy rating and $56 target.
OTHER INITIATIONS:
  • Banc of American started Verigy Ltd (NASDAQ: VRGY) with a Buy rating and $32 target.
  • Stephens initiated Kaman Corp (NASDAQ: KAMN) with an Overweight rating and $34 target.
