Increase in Jobless Claims Blamed on ... Snow?

Earlier this morning, my colleague Melly Alazraki noted that jobless claims rose in the past week. Let's take a look at the numbers. Last week, the number of people filing initial jobless claims increased 22,000 to 496,000. Not only was this increase unexpected, but it also puts the number of jobless claims at their highest rate since mid-November. "Experts" predicted the number of claims would fall to 460,000 in the past week -- whoops.

Here's the best part: some are trying to blame the increase in claims to the snowstorms that have blanketed the East Coast ... seriously. According to the Associated Press report, heavy snow boosted layoffs.

Snow Costs Insurers $2 billion

The two winter storms that hit the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. brought with them $2 billion in insured losses. With wind gusts exceeding 50 mph and snow accumulations topping 30 inches in some places, the majority of insured losses, according to catastrophe modeling firm EQECAT, will be sustained from northern Virginia through the New York metropolitan area. Roof drainage, pipe breakage and water leaks from ice dam in eaves are the most common causes of monetary losses, which find their way up the risk supply chain to insurers.

Is Global Warming Dead? Stocks to Dump ...

With the failed global warming submit; leaked emails, faked numbers, suppressed data and major snow storms hitting both Europe and America global warning aka "climategate" seems to have taken a major hit recently. Some are even going as far as predicting the demise of global warming.

This could be a big turning point for global warming. Having been caught in a lie; they have lost massive amount of creditability and now face an uphill battle to convince a skeptical public. Certainly, global warming may regain public credibility, but it will face a lot of scrutiny as it tries.

Is U.S.'s Political Climate Preventing Even Snow Removal?

Washington Post (WPO) Business Columnist Steven Pearlstein says the nation's current political climate is not only jeopardizing our ability to tackle national problems, it's also preventing progress on such basic issues as snow removal.

Like many residents of the metropolitan Washington area, Pearlstein is grappling with back-to-back blizzards/heavy snow storms that have dumped more than 30 inches of snow on our nation's capital in a week. Washington, which has now received 54.9 inches of snow this year, broke its all-time record for most inches of snow in a year, 54.4 inches, which was set in the winter of 1898-99 (a winter that, incidentally, few of us remember).

Cramer on BloggingStocks: Snow puts further freeze on bulls

TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer snow's not good for stocks, particularly coupled with other disturbing news.

When I was long and it snowed, I would always be worried: Would the bulls stay home? Would they defend their turf?

And when the snow happened on Friday I just figured my portfolio would be a free fire zone: What bull comes to work on a snowday? They take off. The rigor, the toughness, the never miss guys, they are all bears!

I actually thought like that. So, when I woke up and saw the snow I figured, oh yeah, this will be such an easy market to push down, there is so little going for it.

And that's the real issue, isn't it? Other than rate cut possibilities and some good numbers from companies that do a lot of business overseas, this market has nothing going for it.
