(<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/staples-inc/spls/nas">SPLS</a>) has traded in a narrow range over the last year. The 52-week low is $17.45 while the 52-week high is $25. The stock closed today at $20.90, up a mere 0.2%. Volume was very heavy. <br />
<br />
The market had an earnings report from the office-supply retailer to evaluate this session. According to the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/article/staples-net-income-rises-in-4q/499877/">Associated Press</a>, fourth-quarter net profit came in at an adjusted 39 cents per share. Unfortunately, analysts wanted two more pennies for the bottom line. The top line also failed to deliver a beat.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/02/staples-buy-or-sell-after-q4-release/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Staples: Buy or Sell After Q4 Release?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/02/staples-buy-or-sell-after-q4-release/">Staples: Buy or Sell After Q4 Release?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 02 Mar 2011 17:45:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/staples-inc/spls/nas">SPLS</a>) $17 bottom, discussed in September, to scoop-up more shares, you made the correct move. <br />
<br />
Office supplies chain giant Staples Inc., first discussed here <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/04/21/getting-ahead-of-the-pack-with-staples/">on April 21, 2008</a>, at a price of $22.11, has moved smartly higher, and I still like the shares at this stage. <br />

Analysts had forecast a profit of 12 cents per share on revenue of $1.82 billion. This company has been struggling to deal with increased competition from Internet retailers like Amazon.com (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/amazon-com-inc/amzn/nas">AMZN</a>) and big-box stores like Staples (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/staples-inc/spls/nas">SPLS</a>), but today's earnings show some encouraging signs. If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on OMX.<br />
<br />
OMX opened this morning at $16.52. So far today the stock has hit a low of $16.34 and a high of $17.40. As of 12:10, OMX is trading at $16.93 up $2.08 (14.0%). The chart for OMX looks bearish and <a href="http://www.iotogo.com/spoutlookonline" target="_blank">S&amp;P</a> gives OMX a negative 2 STARS (out of 5) sell ranking.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/28/officemax-not-dead-yet/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>OfficeMax Not Dead Yet</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/28/officemax-not-dead-yet/">OfficeMax Not Dead Yet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 28 Oct 2010 13:30:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/staples-inc/spls/nas">SPLS</a>) here on April 21, 2008, at a price of $22.11. The question now is, has the office supplies chain giant put in a bottom near $17? The calculation here is that it has.</p>
<p>Look for Staples to post FY2011 sales growth of 2% to 4%, after a 5.2% increase in FY2010.</p>
<p>Staples should open about 40 net new stores this <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Fiscal%20Year,FY">fiscal year</a>, to total about 2,500, with both U.S., and international zones gaining stores. About 1,000 of Staples stores are located outside the U.S., with Canada (316) and Europe (about 190) hosting the bulk.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/27/has-staples-put-in-a-bottom-at-17/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Has Staples Put in a Bottom at $17?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/27/has-staples-put-in-a-bottom-at-17/">Has Staples Put in a Bottom at $17?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 27 Sep 2010 12:30:00 EST. <p>Goldman Sachs -- citing the firm's growing <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Market%20Share">market share</a> and moves to buy back stock -- recently placed Staples on its Conviction Buy List and raised its <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Price%20Target">price target</a> from $22 to $23.</p>
<p>Of course, the stock is going to have to break out of the <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Downtrend">downtrend</a> it has been in for the past few months before this looks like an attractive technical trade, but the fundamentals are starting to line up.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/09/staples-an-easy-button-to-profits/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Staples: An 'Easy Button' to Profits?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/09/staples-an-easy-button-to-profits/">Staples: An 'Easy Button' to Profits?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 09 Sep 2010 14:30:00 EST. <li>JPMorgan upgraded Anadarko Petroleum (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/anadarko-petroleum-corporation/apc/nys">APC</a>) to overweight from neutral on valuation as it views the recent pullback in shares as excessive. The stock is also well below the 52-week high of $9.19. What do the technical and fundamental factors tell us about the potential of this investment idea?</p>
<p>They're not telling us comforting things, in my opinion. The <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/office-depot-inc/odp/nys/tech-chart">one-year chart</a> doesn't look too bad. Like many other one-year charts, it shows a company that wants to head higher, albeit in a choppy way.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/28/avoid-office-depot-for-now/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Should Investors Avoid Office Depot for Now?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/28/avoid-office-depot-for-now/">Should Investors Avoid Office Depot for Now?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 28 Apr 2010 16:40:00 EST. Outside of February auto sales, we had very little economic data to absorb. The markets spent most of the day much higher, but profit taking and positions being lightened up seemed to take out the steam and the actual closing bell levels. A red or black day was not clear until the last few minutes. Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:<br />
<br />
DJIA: 10,405.98 (+0.02%)<br />
S&amp;P500: 1,118.31 (+0.23%)<br />
NASDAQ: 2,280.79 (+0.32%)<br />

This report is a compilation of anecdotal information on current economic conditions from each of the 12 Federal Reserve Bank districts, and it is released eight times a year. The data comes from interviews with business contacts, economists, market experts, and other sources. The previous report, released in January, showed <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/13/feds-beige-book-cites-some-improvement-in-economic-conditions/">some improvement</a> in most districts and growth in consumer spending over the holiday period, though unemployment remained high. The December report showed <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/02/feds-beige-book-reports-a-modest-improvement-in-the-economy/">modest improvement</a> in eight of the districts.</p>
<p>Retailers were in the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/category/earnings-reports/">earnings spotlight</a> last week and for the most part made <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/23/retail-earnings-roundup-bks-hd-m-shld-tgt/">a strong showing</a> of it. Even as the earnings season winds down, some more retailers are scheduled to release quarterly results this week.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/28/the-week-in-preview-feds-beige-book-more-retail-earnings-can/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Week in Preview: Fed's Beige Book, More Retail Earnings and Canadian Banks</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/28/the-week-in-preview-feds-beige-book-more-retail-earnings-can/">The Week in Preview: Fed's Beige Book, More Retail Earnings and Canadian Banks</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 28 Feb 2010 12:00:00 EST. In afternoon trading, the stock was bid higher by over 6%, with awesome volume backing the trade.
<p> According to the <a href="http://money.aol.com/rtn/pr/staples-inc-announces-third-quarter-2009-performance/rfid276010796?channel=pf">press release</a>, total sales decreased 6%. Earnings per diluted share declined as well, dropping 7% on an adjusted basis to 39 cents. That was good enough, though, to beat expectations by a penny, as indicated by our <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/30/staples-earnings-preview-shrinking-profit-seen-as-stock-hits-52/">preview piece</a>. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/01/staples-heads-higher-on-third-quarter-release/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Staples heads higher on third-quarter release</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/01/staples-heads-higher-on-third-quarter-release/">Staples heads higher on third-quarter release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 01 Dec 2009 14:40:00 EST.
