Nike + iPod Sport Kit hits shelves today

nike+ sport kitThe Nike and Apple collabration reported on in May has just yesterday hit shelves.

With launch events in NY, Chicago, and LA, the Nike + iPod Sport Kit launched to much fanfare and should sales and adoption prove high, will be a strong defensive measure to the purpoted Microsoft iPod killer due to launch later this year.

Apple's newest iTunes iteration provides full support and compatability with the Sport Kit, and additional new shoe models by Nike are due to launch.

Both companies have launched respective web-sites to cover the new product: Apple has a dedicated section on its website for the new product, and Nike has launched a new site NikePlus to feature the new collaboration.

The first piece of the system launched is the nike+ipod sport kit, priced very reasonably at $29.  The nike+ipod sport kit functions as a wireless receiver which works in combination with compatible Nike footwear that contain embedded sensors.  The sensors deliver real-time feedback to the nike+ipod sport kit while the user exercises.

The nike+ipod sport kit plugs directly to the base of the ipod Nano (currently the Nano is the only compatible iPod), and receives information on time, distance, calories burned, and pace.  The information is stored on the iPod, and can be displayed on its screen or delivered through the headphones.  The stored information on the iPod can later be synced to your computer.
