United Airlines (UAUA) recently completed a transatlantic test flight that resulted in significant fuel savings. United, using a Boeing (BA) 777 for the test, realized a fuel savings of 1,400 gallons in a transatlatic flight between Chicago and Frankfurt, Wired's Autopia reported. To achieve the fuel savings, United employed environment intuitive flight techniques, generally referred to as hypermiling. No special equipment was involved in the test.
