Stocks in the news: GM, F, JPM, KBH, TM, FNM, MO, HUN, AAPL, HON ... (update)

General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM) and Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) may get help from the Bush administration. President Bush said in an interview today that "an abrupt bankruptcy for the autos could be devastating for the economy." He signaled he may use TARP funds for that, but didn't provide a timeline or other details. GM shares are up 4.8% in premarket, Ford's shares are up 2%. Shares of both opened about 3% higher.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE: GS) and Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) probably will report fourth-quarter losses this week on shrinking asset values and a decline in fees for businesses. But even the deep cost cutting measures the investment firms -- now turned banks -- may not help help shareholders enough as the companies face another year of slumping revenue. The demand for their services is and will continue to be limited in what is the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. GS shares are down 2% in premarket trade.

Banco Santander (NYSE: STD), Nomura (NYSE: NMR) and Royal Bank of Scotland (NYSE: RBS) are among the victims ex-Nasdaq Chairman Bernard Madoff' $50 billion Ponzi scheme. Santander said its customers had an exposure of around $3.1 billion, while Japan's Nomura has an exposure of around $302 million. STD shares are down 1.5% and RBS shares up 1.7% in premarket trade.

JPMorgan (NYSE: JPM) shares slumped nearly 6% after a Merrill Lynch analyst downgraded JPM to Underperform from Neutral.
Honeywell (NYSE: HON) shares gained nearly 7.5% after the manufacturer affirmed a lower 2009 outlook and said it expects profits to fall 6% to 16% as the deepening global recession hits markets it serves.]

Banco Santander SA is one bank that's creating few jitters

On American exchanges, the banking and financial sectors are not preferred sectors right now, to say the least, but one bank worth a review is Banco Santander SA.

That's because Banco Santander, S.A. (ADR) (NYSE: STD) is one of Europe's leading banks, offering retail banking and consumer finance services in Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and other parts of Europe. The company also operates subsidiaries in Argentina and Mexico, and in 15 other Latin American countries.

Hence, it goes without saying that analysts like Banco's geographic footprint, lending base, and customer breadth. Most important, Banco appears to have been unaffected by the August 2007 subprime-driven financial turmoil.

Best Stocks for 2008: Latin America banks on Banco Santander (STD)

For 25 years, Steven Halpern, editor of TheStockAdvisors.com, has surveyed the leading financial newsletter advisors asking for their favorite stocks for the coming year. This article is one of 100+ ideas in the Best Stocks for 2008 report.

"Banco Santander (NYSE: STD) is a 'swashbuckling Spaniard,'" jests Frida Ghitis, contributing editor for Global Investing.

In referring to her conservative favorite for 2008 she explains, "While the big ships of the financial industry struggled to weather a storm of their own creation in the credit markets, a solidly built craft sailed full speed ahead undeterred by the turbulence, proudly flying the Spanish flag into new and old markets.

"Banco Santander, which trades as an ADR in the US, apparently managed to tack clear of the siren call of easy subprime money in America. Instead, following in the tradition of the conquistadors, it went in search of new riches in the old world and the new.

"With branches in Europe, Africa, and the Americas, Grupo Santander has grown to become the largest bank in Europe by market capitalization, even as its competitors see their market cap wither during difficult times.
