<br />
Suncor, which I first wrote about on February 5, 2009, at a price of $18.35, has chopped and bounced its way up to <a href="http://clearstation.etrade.com/cgi-bin/details?Symbol=su&amp;Refer=http://clearstation.etrade.com/cgi-bin/details%3fSymbol%3dpot">about $48</a>, primarily on oil's sustained, elevated price -- necessary to make higher-cost oil-sands extraction profitable -- and there's scope to $50 and beyond. <br />

<br />
But to say the rise has had its fits-and-starts would be an understatement: $4 weekly gains are followed $3 losses. <br />
<br />
Further, if you're in/at near $18.35, now may be a good time to consider taking some profits with SU. <p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/31/suncor-energy-chops-above-40/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Suncor Energy Chops Above $40</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/31/suncor-energy-chops-above-40/">Suncor Energy Chops Above $40</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 31 Jan 2011 16:30:00 EST. The stock <a href="http://clearstation.etrade.com/cgi-bin/details?Symbol=su&amp;Refer=http://clearstation.etrade.com/cgi-bin/details%3fSymbol%3dben">has cycled</a> above/below the $31 level for seven months.</p>
<p>Moreover, that technical indicator uncertainty typically would warrant kicking the stock, but Suncor's business model and energy sector status keeps the trade in play, for now. I'll review Suncor again in a month or as conditions warrant.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/05/suncor-energy-has-the-right-assets/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Suncor Energy Has the Right Assets for an Oil-Hungry World</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/05/suncor-energy-has-the-right-assets/">Suncor Energy Has the Right Assets for an Oil-Hungry World</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 05 Nov 2010 12:30:00 EST. Shares of the Canada-based oil sands play have meandered for the past three months, but I still like the business model. Here's why.</p>
<p>Recent volatility is in part due to the uncertainty surrounding future oil exploration regulations, as a result of the massive Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Oil sands recovery does not represent as large a risk to the environment as drilling a mile (or more) beneath the ocean, but land-based oil exploration may face tougher regulations, moving forward, nonetheless.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/12/suncor-energy-oil-sands-play/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Suncor Energy: Promising Oil Sands Play</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/12/suncor-energy-oil-sands-play/">Suncor Energy: Promising Oil Sands Play</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 12 Jul 2010 12:30:00 EST. Moreover, oil sands is the driver here, with the focus being Canada's Athabasca oil sands region: oil sands require a larger investment and hence a higher price, but the substantial sands resources of Canada will play a larger role in energy as the world's older, conventional oil fields continue to decline.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/16/consider-suncor-because-the-future-belongs-to-owners-of-oil-san/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Consider Suncor, because the future belongs to owners of oil sands </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/16/consider-suncor-because-the-future-belongs-to-owners-of-oil-san/">Consider Suncor, because the future belongs to owners of oil sands </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 16 Jul 2009 17:00:00 EST. It's not uncommon for the barons of the giant cartel to voice their interest in seeing oil at such-and-such a price.</p>
<p>Recently, OPEC reiterated its desire to see oil prices at $80 per barrel. This, they claim, is the price needed to spur additional investment in crude projects. In this market? You may ask, "How so?" <br /><br />True, the price of <a href="http://stockcharts.com/charts/gallery.html?$WTIC">oil collapsed 2008,</a> due to the departure of many leveraged investors after the financial crisis started, and due to the U.S. and global recessions. Hence, given oil's likely sluggish 2009 path, you have to investigate thoroughly (due diligence) and invest carefully when you're considering an oil play.<br /><br />That said, know this: oil 'taint' going to remain near $35-45 per barrel forever. When global GDP growth resumes (it's flat-lining now, or worse), oil will move back toward $60, and with the above in mind, <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/suncor-energy-inc/su/nys">Suncor Energy</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/suncor-energy-inc/su/nys">SU</a>) is worth a review.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/02/26/suncor-will-be-digging-up-profits-for-a-very-long-time/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Suncor will be 'digging up' profits for a very long time </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/02/26/suncor-will-be-digging-up-profits-for-a-very-long-time/">Suncor will be 'digging up' profits for a very long time </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 26 Feb 2009 17:50:00 EST. If 'buy low, sell high' means anything, we should be buying stocks now with whatever cash we can find. Otherwise, the ship will sail without us. Of course, given the exact market bottom is not knowable until after the fact. </p>
<p>"Indeed, new purchases may not be perfectly timed, but we continue to believe that it will be better than not buying at all. And because our policy with our 2-for-1 portfolio is to buy something every month, at least one of our purchases over the next several months will be very close to perfectly timed.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/04/01/suncor-se-a-stock-split-buy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Suncor (SU): A stock split buy</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/04/01/suncor-se-a-stock-split-buy/">Suncor (SU): A stock split buy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 01 Apr 2008 14:12:00 EST. Here's a look at his top oil plays.</p>
<p>He observes, "The hedgers at the NYMEX are protecting their crude oil positions in ways that indicate they see continuing upward pressure on prices." </p>
<p>Based on this hedging activity, he states, "The outlook for the next 12 expiration months that the by major players at the crude oil table suggest little lasting price weakness, and a general level prevailing above $70 over the remainder of the year."</p>
<p>What are the best stocks to buy to bet on the trend for firm oil prices? To decide, Peter Way looks at the buying patterns of market makers -- the big boys on the trading floor.</p>
<p>From their positions, he notes, "Among the large oil producers, China's <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/cnooc-ltd-ads/ceo/nys">CNOOC, Ltd.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/cnooc-ltd-ads/ceo/nys">CEO</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/canadian-natural-resources-limited/cnq/nys?tabs=quotesandnews">Canadian Natural Resources, Ltd.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/canadian-natural-resources-limited/cnq/nys?tabs=quotesandnews">CNQ</a>), and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/suncor-energy-inc/su/nys?tabs=quotesandnews">Suncor Energy</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/suncor-energy-inc/su/nys?tabs=quotesandnews">SU</a>) all combine historically strong odds and payoffs."</p>
<p>In addition, he notes positive market maker activity among oil exploration &amp; production stocks. He explains, "With significant quantities of low-cost reserves already found, and prospects for additional finds tied up, these companies inevitably will get acquired by bigger producers whose customer demands exceed their yearly reserve findings." </p>
<p>For many, he says, it's just a matter of time. Notable stocks in the stock, he adds, are <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/holly-corporation/hoc/nys?tabs=quotesandnews">Holly Corp.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/holly-corporation/hoc/nys?tabs=quotesandnews">HOC</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/carrizo-oil-and-gas-inc/crzo/nas?tabs=quotesandnews">Carrizo Oil &amp; Gas</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/carrizo-oil-and-gas-inc/crzo/nas?tabs=quotesandnews">CRZO</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/range-resources-corporation/rrc/nys?tabs=quotesandnews">Range Resources</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/range-resources-corporation/rrc/nys?tabs=quotesandnews">RRC</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/southwestern-energy-company/swn/nys?tabs=quotesandnews">Southwest Energy</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/southwestern-energy-company/swn/nys?tabs=quotesandnews">SWN</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/ultra-petroleum-corp/upl/ase?tabs=quotesandnews">Ultra Petroleum</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/ultra-petroleum-corp/upl/ase?tabs=quotesandnews">UPL</a>), and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/talisman-energy-inc/tlm/nys?tabs=quotesandnews">Talisman Energy</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/talisman-energy-inc/tlm/nys?tabs=quotesandnews">TLM</a>).</p>

All that is, except for <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/suncor-energy-inc/su/nys">Suncor Energy</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/suncor-energy-inc/su/nys">SU</a>) which has been boosted after an <a target="_blank" href="http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/suncor-energy-upgraded-buy-deutsche/story.aspx?guid=%7B4439B177%2D8AE2%2D48E2%2D9D35%2D7FA09C7E745A%7D">upgrade this morning</a>.<br /><br />Most oil stocks have traded flat to slightly up in today's market, but not Suncor. Traders have sent the stock trading up 3.45% to $76.76 picking up $2.53 at this point in the trading session.The stock had traded up as high as $77.59 earlier in the session before some profit taking came in to push prices down a bit.<br /><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" align="right" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.bloggingstocks.com/media/2007/03/su032807.png" alt="" /><br />This morning the company was upgraded by Deutsche Bank to a Buy from a Hold. According to Deutsche, the stock can be used as an effective hedge against the current geopolitical unrest in the world: "Suncor's massive oil sands position are expected to generate sustained production growth with no declines over the next 50 years."<br /><br />Wall Street seems to agree at this point. Let's check out a one year chart on the company:<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Michael Fowlkes has worked as a stock trader for seven years and spent the last two years working as an analyst for the online investment advisory service </span><a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.iotogo.com/aolblog_mf">Investor's Observer</a><span style="font-style: italic;"></span><span style="font-style: italic;">.</span><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/03/28/suncor-breaking-away-from-the-pack-and-earning-an-upgrade/">Suncor: Breaking away from the pack, and earning an upgrade</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 28 Mar 2007 14:45:00 EST.
