(<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/target-corporation/tgt/nys" class="inlinked">TGT</a>) is one of the top ten largest retailers in the U.S. by sales, competing mainly with Walmart (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys" class="inlinked">WMT</a>), Best Buy (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/best-buy-incorporated/bby/nys" class="inlinked">BBY</a>), Macy's (M), Sears (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/sears-holdings-corporation/shld/nas" class="inlinked">SHLD</a>) and Costco (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/costco-wholesale-corporation/cost/nas" class="inlinked">COST</a>). The recent economic environment has revealed that the firm is highly exposed to U.S. macro-economic trends that impact retail spending, such as high rising energy prices, lower <a href="http://realestate.aol.com/home-values" class="inlinked">home values</a> and downturns in the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/economy/" class="inlinked">economy</a>. Although Target positions itself as a "cheap chic" retailer, consumers are still cutting back on goods such as apparel and electronics, both of which play an important role in Target's total sales.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/18/positive-outlook-for-targets-u-s-store-revenues/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Positive Outlook for Target's U.S. Store Revenues</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/18/positive-outlook-for-targets-u-s-store-revenues/">Positive Outlook for Target's U.S. Store Revenues</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 18 Mar 2011 12:00:00 EST. Take a look at the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/target-corporation/tgt/nys/tech-chart">twelve-month chart</a>. Find where the shares were on Jan. 3. Got it? Now, do you see what happened since then? I don't think you can miss such a big drop.</p>
<p>The 52-week low for the retailer is $48.23; the 52-week high is $60.97. The equity finished down 0.7% to $51.30 on Monday. Volume, thankfully, was below average. That lack of conviction could be a saving grace.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/08/targets-pullback-trading-opportunity/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Target's Pullback: View It as a Trading Opportunity?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/08/targets-pullback-trading-opportunity/">Target's Pullback: View It as a Trading Opportunity?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 08 Mar 2011 10:00:00 EST. That was at $29.50. Know what the stock closed at yesterday? Its final price was $41.33. And that's rather close to the 52-week high of $42.27.<br />
<br />
To fully appreciate how dramatic the rise in the stock has been requires a look at the one-year <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/big-lots-inc/big/nys/tech-chart">chart</a>. Impressive, isn't it? I guess I should have been a stronger believer in the retailer. So, what should I be thinking now?</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/04/big-lots-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Big Lots Earnings: Should Investors Take Profits Now?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/04/big-lots-earnings/">Big Lots Earnings: Should Investors Take Profits Now?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 04 Mar 2011 09:20:00 EST. Don't worry folks, the experts are going to blame the <a href="http://www.aolnews.com/story/retailers-report-surprisingly-weak/616715/" target="_blank">poor December revenue</a> on different factors, including strong November sales taking away from December and post-Christmas sales suffering from the Northeast blizzard. <br />

First things first, not all retailers have reported their results -- a majority of heavy hitters will report today. Nevertheless, the results are being described as "slow and steady" rather than the expected blowout holiday shopping season. For example, Costco (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/costco-wholesale-corporation/cost/nas" target="_blank">COST</a>) reported sales that increased 6%. This is positive data, unfortunately expectations called for an increase of 6.2%. Target (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/target-corporation/tgt/nys" target="_blank">TGT</a>) saw sales increase 0.9%, well short of the expected 4%. Of course sales were better at Macy's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/macy-s-inc/m/nys" target="_blank">M</a>), right? I mean they are adding jobs and all. Wrong, sales did increase (3.9%) but missed expectations (4.5%).<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/06/holiday-sales-fall-short-of-expectations/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Holiday Sales Falling Short of Expectations</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/06/holiday-sales-fall-short-of-expectations/">Holiday Sales Falling Short of Expectations</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 06 Jan 2011 12:00:00 EST. (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">WMT</a>) from Bloomberg. The news outlet obtained an e-mail that was sent to Walmart managers instructing them to raise prices on an average of 1,800 types of toys per store. The managers were instructed to perform the price markups "as soon as possible" and were told that the price changes were "to better enable your store and the company to have a successful financial month."</p>
<p>Walmart stated that these price increases went into effect because temporary discounts on products (including toys) ended on November 30. Spokesman Ravi Jariwala, spokesman for Walmart, said in an e-mail, "Once a rollback ends, the item returns to its original everyday low price." That said, Eric Johnson director of the Center for Digital Strategies at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth noted that "In previous years Wal-Mart has come out and hammered everyone with unbelievably low toy prices ... They stepped away from that this year and after Thanksgiving their prices have crept back up."</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/16/walmart-raises-toy-prices/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Walmart Stores Raise Toy Prices for Christmas -- Surprised?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/16/walmart-raises-toy-prices/">Walmart Stores Raise Toy Prices for Christmas -- Surprised?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 12:00:00 EST. The stock is not too far from the 52-week high of $58.52. The one-year <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/target-corporation/tgt/nys/tech-chart">chart</a> shows some sideways action over the last several months. Overall, given the kind of business Target is in, I think one can say that the equity has been holding up fairly well in this tough market.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/17/target-up-on-q3-release/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Target Up on Q3 Release</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/17/target-up-on-q3-release/">Target Up on Q3 Release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 15:00:00 EST. Many more quarterly reports from retailers are due this week, and by and large expectations of analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are high.</p>
<p>Walmart (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys" class="inlinked" target="_blank">WMT</a>), the king of retailers, is expected to buck the trend, though. Analysts anticipate that the Bentonville-based company will report that its third-quarter earnings grew only 6.7% year-over-year to 90 cents per share. During the three months that ended in October, Walmart announced an <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/walmart-announces-intent-to-acquire-south-africa-based-massmart/rfid371091986/?channel=pf" target="_blank">acquisition in South Africa</a> and kicked-off the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/walmart-announces-early-savings-on-toys-to-kick-off-holiday-shopping-season/rfid375966082/?channel=pf" target="_blank">holiday shopping season</a>, and revenue for that period is predicted to have risen 3.0% to $102.4 billion. Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, analysts so far expect sequential and <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Year%20Over%20Year%20-%20YOY" target="_blank">year-over-year</a> growth of both earnings and revenue. Walmart results have not fallen short of consensus estimates in the past five quarters.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/14/week-in-preview-retailers-offer-up-earnings-wmt-anf-low-tgt/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Week in Preview: Retailers Offer Up Earnings (WMT, ANF, LOW, TGT)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/14/week-in-preview-retailers-offer-up-earnings-wmt-anf-low-tgt/">Week in Preview: Retailers Offer Up Earnings (WMT, ANF, LOW, TGT)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 14 Nov 2010 12:30:00 EST. The price war centers on toys because "parents will buy stuff for their kids even when the economy is awful."</p>
<p>The article adds that shoppers have attempted to buy the "biggest toy bargains" while "ignor[ing] stores' other offerings." However, the article is quick to point out improving economic conditions suggest that retailers have a reason to believe the shoppers will look around the store a bit more and be quicker to part with some cash. Is this a safe assumption? Yes, I think that it is. However, I have a couple of reservations.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/09/is-holiday-shopping-changing-walmart-and-target-think-so/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Is Holiday Shopping Changing? The one-year chart is a sad graphic for shareholders to look at. <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/big-lots-inc/big/nys/tech-chart">As can be seen</a>, the stock, which had previously displayed a significant amount of strength, is now in retreat mode. The attacking bears on Wall Street can be a scary force, to be sure. <br />

On Tuesday, shares of the retailer were off by 2.8%; at the end of the session, they settled at $30.86. That's still far off from the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/52-Week%20High,52-Week%20Low" class="inlinked">52-week low</a> of $23.04.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/25/big-lots-earnings-show-growth-what-about-the-stock/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Big Lots Earnings Show Growth -- What About the Stock?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/25/big-lots-earnings-show-growth-what-about-the-stock/">Big Lots Earnings Show Growth -- What About the Stock?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 25 Aug 2010 09:00:00 EST. <p>That's technically a positive sign, but I should point out that we're in a tough environment. You can't trust any gain if you're a trader. If you happened to buy the retailer for a quick move before earnings were released, I hope you got out Wednesday, because once the thesis is realized, it's best to book profits and wait for another entry point.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/19/target-rises-on-q2-earnings-news/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Target Rises on Q2 Earnings News</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/19/target-rises-on-q2-earnings-news/">Target Rises on Q2 Earnings News</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 19 Aug 2010 09:00:00 EST. Some are more meaningful than others. Yesterday's upward alteration of Target's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/target-corporation/tgt/nys">TGT</a>) quarterly payment was pretty notable, although it's not necessarily doing much for the stock. <br />
<br />
According to the corporate <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/target-corporation-increases-regular-quarterly-dividend-by-47-percent/rfid337156518/?channel=pf">press release</a>, the new dividend is 47% higher than the previous one. Investors in the retailer will now receive 25 cents per share every three months, translating into an annual payout of $1 per share. Interestingly enough, the stock concluded Thursday's session on a flat note, as our <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/09/closing-bell-a-curve-ball-day-bp-rmbs-tivo-tgt-tlab-wen/">Closing Bell</a> piece indicates. And today, the stock is higher by a little over 1% to $52.97 with roughly three hours to go before the final trade.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/10/targets-dividend-increase-is-a-positive-on-the-stock/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Target's Dividend Increase Is a Positive on the Stock</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/10/targets-dividend-increase-is-a-positive-on-the-stock/">Target's Dividend Increase Is a Positive on the Stock</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 10 Jun 2010 15:30:00 EST. Then, economic troubles appeared in Europe, and the bears came clawing their way to Wall Street to ruin the rally. Like many other stocks, Talbots got hit. And on Tuesday, it closed down 9.5% to $12.20. The 52-week high on the shares is $17.79.<br />
<br />
During the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/13/talbots-q4-earnings-smash-estimates/">fourth quarter</a>, the retailer beat estimates by a wide margin. This time around, it's more of the same. According to <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6572FP20100608?type=globalMarketsNews">Reuters</a>, adjusted profit from continuing operations calculated out to 38 cents per share, much higher than the call of 16 cents per share (and much better than the adjusted loss of 23 cents per share from continuing operations in the year-ago <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/talbots-reports-strong-first-quarter-results/rfid336637079/?channel=pf">period</a>).</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/09/talbots-first-quarter-profit/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Talbots Enjoys a First-Quarter Profit, but It Doesn't Help the Stock</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/09/talbots-first-quarter-profit/">Talbots Enjoys a First-Quarter Profit, but It Doesn't Help the Stock</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 09 Jun 2010 09:30:00 EST.
