The sequel is on its way to a domestic take of $400 million. And now, just this past weekend, the two companies have scored with <em>G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra</em>.</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Boxofficemojo</a>, <em>Joe</em> came in first with about $56 million as of early estimates available at the time of writing. That was more than enough to beat the second-place film, <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/sony-corporation/sne/nys">Sony</a>'s (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/sony-corporation/sne/nys">SNE</a>) <em>Julie &amp; Julia</em>. I'm sure this didn't surprise <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/time-warner-inc-new/twx/nys">Time Warner</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/time-warner-inc-new/twx/nys">TWX</a>) shareholders. The latest installment of the popular fantasy series took in about $79 million as of early estimates. However, <em>Prince</em> actually opened last Wednesday. If you add in monies derived from the Wednesday and Thursday showings, you've got a gross of about $159 million so far. </p>
<p>This compares favorably to <em>Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix</em>, which opened in July 2007. <em>Phoenix</em> <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=daily&amp;id=harrypotter5.htm">made just under $140 million</a> during its five-day debut. I like such growth. It shows that the franchise retains a good quantity of demand. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/20/time-warners-wizard-works-wonders-yet-again-at-the-box-office/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Time Warner's wizard works wonders yet again at the box office </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/20/time-warners-wizard-works-wonders-yet-again-at-the-box-office/">Time Warner's wizard works wonders yet again at the box office </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 20 Jul 2009 09:40:00 EST. According to <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Boxofficemojo</a>, at the time of this writing, the results are too close to call. Both <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/viacom-inc-cl-a/via/nys">Viacom</a>'s (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/viacom-inc-cl-a/via/nys">VIA</a>) <em>Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen</em> and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/news-corporation/nws/nas">News Corp.</a>'s (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/news-corporation/nws/nas">NWS</a>) <em>Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs</em> are credited with the same amount of money: $42.5 million. Boxofficemojo is giving <em>Dinosaurs</em> the edge for now and calling it the top movie, presumably because the per-theater average for the computer cartoon is slightly higher.</p>
<p>I previously discussed News Corp.'s <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/04/ice-age-sequel-off-to-good-start-what-does-this-say-about-d/">strong opening</a> with <em>Dinosaurs</em>, but unfortunately, I'm not so sure the movie lived up to it. When the second <em>Ice Age</em> was released back in 2006, it scored <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=iceage2.htm">$68 million</a> in its three-day debut weekend. <em>Dinosaurs</em> didn't do as well, but let's take into account the film's Wednesday opening, and tally up the gross for the five-day period, since some of the excitement that might have been reserved for the weekend could have been spread over the mid-week showings. Even by that standard, as of the current estimate, <em>Dinosaurs</em> has taken in a little less than the second <em>Ice Age</em>.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/06/were-news-corp-s-ice-age-sequel-and-ges-public-enemies-dis/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Were News Corp.'s 'Ice Age' sequel and GE's 'Public Enemies' disappointments? </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/06/were-news-corp-s-ice-age-sequel-and-ges-public-enemies-dis/">Were News Corp.'s 'Ice Age' sequel and GE's 'Public Enemies' disappointments? </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 06 Jul 2009 09:10:00 EST. It opened with $13.8 million on that day, which represents <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsnews/idINN0254763320090702?rpc=33">a record-breaking performance</a> for an animated feature released in the middle of the week. Now, just recently, I mentioned <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/06/26/viacom-scores-with-transformers-good-for-time-warners-pot/">how I hate it</a> when Hollywood promotes the breaking of a record. It tends to be very qualified. This situation is no different. Still, I'll give credit where credit is due. <em>Dinosaurs</em> is doing well so far. </p>
<p>We'll have to see how the weekend ultimately treats the new feature. The competition is stiff. It's the July 4th holiday, and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/viacom-inc-cl-a/via/nys">Viacom</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/viacom-inc-cl-a/via/nys">VIA</a>) is out there with <em>Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen</em>. Thankfully, News Corp. won't have too much to worry about from <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-walt-disney-company/dis/nys">Disney</a>'s (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-walt-disney-company/dis/nys">DIS</a>) Pixar cartoon <em>Up</em>. As can be seen by a <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/">Boxofficemojo chart</a>, the excitement surrounding <em>Up</em> has faded. News Corp. was naturally counting on this to happen by this point in time. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/04/ice-age-sequel-off-to-good-start-what-does-this-say-about-d/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>'Ice Age' sequel off to good start -- what does this say about Disney and Pixar?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/04/ice-age-sequel-off-to-good-start-what-does-this-say-about-d/">'Ice Age' sequel off to good start -- what does this say about Disney and Pixar?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 04 Jul 2009 12:00:00 EST. No surprise after observing what the film did <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/06/26/viacom-scores-with-transformers-good-for-time-warners-pot/">last Wednesday</a> when it opened. According to <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Boxofficemojo</a>, <em>Fallen</em>, as of early estimates, grossed $112 million during the three-day period starting Friday. The film has taken in over $200 million so far once the days leading up to the weekend are added in. Excellent business. Especially considering that the sequel is doing better than its predecessor at this point, according to a <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/showdowns/chart/?view=daily&amp;id=clangingmetal.htm">comparison chart</a> (this chart includes a comparison with <em>Iron Man</em> as well, so just focus on the <em>Transformers</em> franchise). </p>
<p>Growth. You've got to love it. I'm sure Viacom does. <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-walt-disney-company/dis/nys">Disney</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-walt-disney-company/dis/nys">DIS</a>) isn't doing badly, either. Although not a huge hit, <em>The Proposal</em> did respectable business. It came in second with $18 million. Turns out Mike had nothing to worry about. </p>
<p>This film is doing great. At the time of this writing, the film was estimated to have grossed <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=2598&amp;p=.htm">over $60 million</a> on its opening day, which was this past Wednesday. Now, I hate talking about the breaking of this record and that record. Hollywood loves to point out that <em>Movie X</em> achieved the highest gross for a film released on a cloudy day in late September when the moon was full and a new supernova was spotted in the constellation of Cygnus. I'd rather talk about how much profit was achieved, and how much return on capital was recorded (too bad media companies don't have to reveal such data). Nevertheless, I'll give Viacom and <em>Fallen</em> credit. It apparently scored the biggest Wednesday opening ever, and it should theoretically have a great weekend, assuming word of mouth is good. So far, I've only heard superlative things about this particular piece of celluloid, and I know of one person who immediately consulted her cell phone to schedule a time to see the picture with her friends when she heard how awesome it was. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/06/26/viacom-scores-with-transformers-good-for-time-warners-pot/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Viacom scores with 'Transformers' -- good for Time Warner's 'Potter'?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/06/26/viacom-scores-with-transformers-good-for-time-warners-pot/">Viacom scores with 'Transformers' -- good for Time Warner's 'Potter'?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 26 Jun 2009 17:30:00 EST. Michael Bay, according to <em><a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3i8071e0d9c25cb6b8f5dd267f7255f524">The Hollywood Reporter</a></em>, is upset with <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/viacom-inc-new/via/nys">Viacom</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/viacom-inc-new/via/nys">VIA</a>). Why? Well, there's a movie coming out this week called <em>Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen</em>. It's the sequel to the big summer hit from a couple years back that brought the <em>Transformers</em> brand into the multiplex culture. Bay directed both projects. And he apparently has taken a tantrum, a little baby-like tantrum, over the marketing of the new film.
<p>The <em>Reporter</em> article, which talks about the <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2009/06/21/michael-bay-transformers-2-steven-spielberg-jerry-bruckheimer-brad-grey-paramount-studios-mtv-l-a-times/">TMZ.com post</a> that brought an email Bay wrote in May to the world's attention, says that Bay believes the quality of the marketing support so far on the second <em>Transformers</em> is way below par. He feels no buzz equity surrounding the movie. He doesn't think that an appropriate zeitgeist of support has been synthetically manufactured by the powers that be at Paramount. And he wonders if it might have to do with money: "I cannot figure if this is a cash issue with your company?" Further, he proffers: "Right now we are not an event. We are just a sequel, which is different." </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/06/22/viacom-and-michael-bay-stop-whining-mike/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Viacom and Michael Bay: Stop whining, Mike</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/06/22/viacom-and-michael-bay-stop-whining-mike/">Viacom and Michael Bay: Stop whining, Mike</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 22 Jun 2009 15:40:00 EST. That reminded me that the <em>Transformers</em> sequel, <em>Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen</em>, is due out at the end of June. That further reminded me that it might be time to take a look at the stock of <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/mattel-inc/mat/nys">Mattel</a>'s (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/mattel-inc/mat/nys">MAT</a>) archrival.</p>
<p>Hasbro had a rough time last Christmas. When I covered the toy maker's earnings in February, I noted that they experienced <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/02/09/hasbro-shares-up-on-earnings-miss-does-this-mean-its-a-buy/">a significant drop</a> and that they missed analyst expectations. But I also noted something else: the company's shares rallied on the bad earnings release. That gave me pause. Could this be an interesting indication about Hasbro's future? Was the stock a buy?</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/04/11/should-you-be-looking-at-hasbro/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Should you be looking at Hasbro?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/04/11/should-you-be-looking-at-hasbro/">Should you be looking at Hasbro?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 11 Apr 2009 16:10:00 EST.
