Hurricane plays: Winners and losers

"I have four Hurricane Season stock picks -- two bullish, two bearish -- to play this summer's potentially wild weather," says Sean Broderick in his Uncommon Wisdom advisory.

"Last year's stormy weather spawned 16 named storms, which was higher than the long-term average of about 10 tropical storms and six hurricanes per year in a typical Atlantic hurricane season.

"The major hurricane forecasters have now made their predictions, and it's for a 'moderate' hurricane season. That's good news for America's oil and gas industry.

Tetra Technologies (TTI) earnings drag stock 26% lower

Shares of Tetra Technologies Inc. (NYSE: TTI) sank more than 26% Friday after the Texas oil and gas company reported disappointing second-quarter earnings.

Tetra posted a net income of $22.9 million, or 30 cents a share, on revenue of $258.1 million. Earnings per share were 22 cents less than analysts expected. Second-quarter net income last year was $29.2 million, or 39 cents per share, on revenue of $207.1 million.

Tetra was one of several energy companies to fall short of analysts' expectations Friday. Standing out to a lesser extent was Genesis Energy LP (AMEX: GEL), which posted a net loss of $1.4 million, or 9 cents per share, for the second quarter of 2007, compared to net income of $3.4 million or 24 cents in 2006. Analysts were expecting 16 cents per share.

Just before 2 p.m. Friday, shares of Tetra were selling at $19.44, nearly $7 under Thursday's close of $26.41.

Analyst upgrades 6-12-07: JDSU, MCD, PIR and TTWO

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Joseph A. Bank Clothiers, Inc (JOSB), Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc (TTWO), McDonald's Corp (MCD) and RF Micro Devices (RFMD) were today's more notable upgrades:
  • First Albany upgraded shares of Joseph A. Bank Clothiers (NASDAQ: JOSB) to Neutral from Sell, following the Q1 upside and indications that Q2 is off to a strong start.
  • Kaufman Brothers raised Take-Two Interactive Software (NASDAQ: TTWO) to Hold from Sell with an $18 target following the release of Q2 results, saying they see evidence the company is stabilizing. JP Morgan also upgraded TTWO shares to Overweight from Neutral, as the company considers shares attractive ahead of the Grand Theft Auto IV launch in October.
  • Goldman added McDonald's Corp (NYSE: MCD) to their Americas Conviction Buy List citing expectations for upward earnings revisions.
  • ThinkEquity upgraded shares of RF Micro Devices (NASDAQ: RFMD) to Buy from Source of Funds based on valuation.

Analyst upgrades 1-5-07: Abercrombie gets a boost

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Norfolk Southern and Abercrombie & Fitch were today's most notable upgrades.
  • Citigroup upgraded shares of Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC) on valuation as they believe the recent weakness has brought shares to an attractive level.
  • Merrill Lynch upgraded shares of Abercrombie & Fitch Co 'A' (NYSE: ANF), as the firm does not believe the stock's current valuation reflects the company's growth opportunities; additionally, the firm sees significant growth opportunities at the Hollister brand and expects free cash flow growth in 2007.

OTHER UPGRADES:
  • Goldman Sachs upgraded Wellpoint Inc (NYSE: WLP) to Buy from Neutral, believing the company is better positioned in comparison to their peers to weather increasing price competition.
  • Matrix USA upgraded TETRA Technologies (NYSE: TTI) to Buy from Hold, as Tetra continues to invest in expanding its well abandonment and decommissioning services in order to meet growing long-term demand forecasts, and its fluid division continues to benefit from higher bromine selling prices.
  • JP Morgan added Outperform rated DivX Inc (NASDAQ: DIVX) to their Focus List.
  • UBS upgraded Ingersoll-Rand (NYSE: IR) to Buy from Neutral.
