But according to its fourth-quarter report, it looks like the firm is finally getting back on its feet. Net income increased by 7.1% to $1.35 billion. Actually, the firm was profitable for all of 2010, which was the first time since 2006.

There were some headwinds in the quarter, though. One was the strength of the Swiss franc. Also, UBS had to make some adjustments because of the changes in the fixed income market.

Continue reading UBS: Getting the Trust Back

UBS: Getting the Trust Back originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 08 Feb 2011 12:30:00 EST. In the U.S., the Federal Reserve is buying $600 billion in treasuries in an attempt to keep interest rates low. Low interest rates encourage higher gold prices.

In Europe, the situation is still unstable. The European Central Bank (ECB) has stepped up its purchases of member nations' bonds. Spain is still on the table as a country teetering on verge of a bailout. Until the European mess is settled, gold remains a surrogate currency.

Continue reading Analysts Forecast Higher Gold Prices in 2011

Analysts Forecast Higher Gold Prices in 2011 originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sun, 02 Jan 2011 14:15:00 EST. The latest: iSoftStone Holding (ISS). This information technology services company priced its offering at $13, which was at the top of its $11 too $13 range. In Tuesday morning trading, the shares were up 30%.

iSoftStone provides its high-end consulting services to four main industry verticals, which include technology, communications, financial services and energy. No doubt, these are growing categories in China. In all, there are 71 clients.

Continue reading iSoftStone Continues the Chinese IPO Surge

iSoftStone Continues the Chinese IPO Surge originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 14 Dec 2010 12:00:00 EST. You could not have made this stuff up, it's so incredible.

The story deals with the behind the scenes activities of the Federal Reserve during the financial meltdown. The data revealed by the Fed and chronicled in the Wall Street Journal tell of the multi-trillion dollar loans the Fed made to financial institutions here in the US and abroad. In all, the Fed set up 10 different programs and lent some $3.3 trillion of credit.
Results also easily beat the consensus estimate. Furthermore, the company announced that it should have all the tax matters with the U.S. government settled by October.

The bank enjoyed strong performance from its investment banking sector, which saw pretax profit increase 10%. "This was a good result in volatile market conditions, and demonstrates the progress we are making," CEO Oswald Gruebel said in a statement.
The brokerage house upgraded SanDisk to buy from neutral and assigned a new target price of $55 per share, an elevation from $46 per share. UBS's analyst believes that strong second-half demand will outweigh any risks the stock may hold. The analyst predicts "better than expected ASP trends" continuing in the second half, combining with tight market supply to boost the shares.

Continue reading SanDisk Benefits from UBS Upgrade

SanDisk Benefits from UBS Upgrade originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 12 Jul 2010 11:40:00 EST. UBS upgraded the stock from a Neutral to a Buy yesterday, and FBR Capital jumped on the band wagon today with an upgrade from a Market Perform to Outperform.

The only difference in the outlooks for U.S. Bank from these two firms is UBS sees the stock rising to $29, while FBR Capital sees it rising to only $28 -- the high level U.S. Bank saw in mid-April before turning around and falling with the rest of the market.

I, too, like U.S. Bank's prospects in the future. As Congress continues to take teeth out of the financial reform legislation to try and find a way to get 60 votes in the Senate, future prospects for the financial industry continue to look better and better. And since the prospect of a heavier regulatory hand is already priced into these financial stocks, U.S. Bank looks like it could rebound quite nicely as traders adjust positively to watered-down reforms.

Continue reading Firms Lining Up to Upgrade U.S. Bank

Firms Lining Up to Upgrade U.S. Bank originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 30 Jun 2010 15:30:00 EST. Thursday, stocks got a boost from strong Chinese export data and as both European Central Bank and as Bank of England kept interest rates unchanged as traders awaited U.S. data on labor and trade balance.

Overseas, Asian and European markets rose after China said exports rose 48.5% in May, while imports jumped 48.3% last month. As concerns mounted that Europe and its sovereign debt problems would hamper global recovery, these figures provided relief to markets. Meanwhile, the euro rose as the European Central Bank said it is leaving its key interest rate unchanged at 1%. The Bank of England also left its base interest rate at a record low of 0.5% as the economic recovery remains fragile.
Continue reading Before the Bell: Futures Higher on China Exports; Ahead of Data

Before the Bell: Futures Higher on China Exports; Ahead of Data originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 10 Jun 2010 08:30:00 EST.
Nationalist and left-wing lawmakers blocked a treaty with the U.S. that would have allowed UBS to hand over said files. This "treaty" was reached last August between the Swiss government and Washington in order to put to rest a disagreement about UBS's supposed role in tax evasion. The boondoggle was that the Social Democrats wanted a commitment from the government to tax bankers' bonuses and the People's Party wanted a vote against the tax before dealing with the U.S. tax treaty.

Continue reading Swiss Lawmakers Reject Deal to Name American Clients of UBS

Swiss Lawmakers Reject Deal to Name American Clients of UBS originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 08 Jun 2010 11:00:00 EST.
