Earnings surprises: Quant picks 'best buy' trio

"We screened our database for standouts based on meaningful profit surprises," says quantitative analyst Richard Moroney.

In Upside, a service focused on applying in-depth quantitative analysis to small to mid-cap growth companies, he looks at a trio of stocks earning his "Best Buy" rating -- Priceline (NASDAQ: PCLN), Sybase (NYSE: SY), and Synaptics (NASDAQ: SYNA).

"All things equal, the better a stock's earnings momentum and profit outlook, the more likely it is to outperform in the year ahead.

Helix Energy Solutions (HLX): A 'Best Buy' in energy

"First recommended in September 2004, Helix Energy Solutions (NYSE: HLX) is the oldest holding on our Buy List - and the biggest winner, gaining 133%," notes Richard Moroney.

Here, the editor of Upside explain, "Considering its bright profit-growth prospects, reasonable valuation, and impressive Quadrix scores, Helix remains among our very best ideas and a top pick in the oil patch."

"Helix serves energy producers worldwide, providing such contract services (36% of total revenue for the nine months ended September) as deepwater pipe-laying, well operations, robotics, and reservoir services.

"The shelf-contracting business (34%) consists of 59%-owned Cal Dive International (NYSE: DVR), a provider of dive-related and shallow-water construction services.

"The fast-growing oil and natural gas production business (30%) focuses on marginal, mature, and smaller fields - properties no longer significant or viable for large energy companies. Fueled partly by high energy prices, petroleum companies are increasingly targeting mature and small reservoirs.

Best energy ideas: Drilling for value in oil services

"The energy sector has been the U.S. stock market's best performer over the past three and five years -- and among the best so far in 2007," says Richard Moroney in his Upside newsletter.

He says, "Shares of energy companies, especially equipment and services concerns, seem unduly cheap -- even if per-barrel oil prices retreat by $10 or $15." Here he looks at Gardner Denver Inc. (NYSE: GDI) and NATCO Group Inc. (NYSE: NTG).

"Over the last three years, spending on capital expenditures has grown at an impressive 28% annual clip. Even if oil and gas prices drop sharply, which seems unlikely given supply and demand forecasts -- capital spending should remain robust.

"Gardner Denver is one of the largest providers of reciprocating pumps used in oil and gas drilling and production. For full-year 2007, management lifted its per-share profit guidance to a range of $3.10 to $3.18, up from the $2.49 earned in 2006. Gardner Denver, positioned to exceed consensus profit estimates, is a Best Buy.
