(UAUA) was singled out for a directionally neutral spread strategy on Wednesday, with one options trader betting on near-term volatility for the airline issue. Shortly after the opening bell, a block of 325 contracts changed hands on UAUA's June 24 call for the ask price of $1.32, indicating they were purchased. Simultaneously, a matching block of 325 June 16 puts traded at the ask price of $0.50, revealing these contracts were also bought.
Continue reading Strangle Player Bets on a Big Move for UAL Corp.

Strangle Player Bets on a Big Move for UAL Corp. originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 15 Apr 2010 12:40:00 EST. Now the shares are attracting even more attention, thanks to an industry report suggesting that average summer airfares could rise 25% on a year-over-year basis.

As a result, LCC's call options have been drawing a crowd. On Tuesday alone, call volume surged to more than double the norm, with 7,345 contracts crossing the tape. During the course of the session, traders on the International Securities Exchange (ISE) alone bought to open 4,129 calls on the airline, compared to just one put.

Continue reading Call Buying Climbs on US Airways Group

Call Buying Climbs on US Airways Group originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 14 Apr 2010 12:20:00 EST. Spirit Airlines, out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is going to start charging a fee on August 1, 2010. The only group that is not chagrined are probably the nudists that travel light when vacationing.

Given all the fees the airlines are tacking on they might as well evolve into banks. Actually I think this is another instance where business has learned a bad lesson from government agencies. The government may require legislative action to raise taxes but bureaucrats the world over seem to be able to add new fees at will.
Continue reading Spirit Airlines Adds Carry-on Fee -- Nudist's Delight?

Spirit Airlines Adds Carry-on Fee -- Nudist's Delight? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 09 Apr 2010 17:00:00 EST. Excluding items such as hedging write-downs, US Airways' loss was only 20 cents per share, down from $1.94 in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Meanwhile, revenue dwindled 4.9% to $2.6 billion. Passenger revenue per available seat mile dropped 7%, while load factor backpedaled from 80% to 79.8%. US Airways was able to boost its bottom line even as top-line results suffered, thanks to a 17% decline in operating expenses (mostly due to more favorable fuel costs).

Continue reading US Airways Rises After 4Q Report, but Still Faces Challenges

US Airways Rises After 4Q Report, but Still Faces Challenges originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 28 Jan 2010 12:30:00 EST. The airline had hoped not to cut this many positions, anticipating that resignations and departures would do the hard work for it. But employee attrition fell sharply from last year - probably because this isn't exactly the best market for job hunting. Unfortunately, the same reasons that cause employees to stay force US Airways to cut them loose.

At nine airports, US Airways is moving to outside contractors for ramp work. The Las Vegas US Airways Club will close and its staff cut. Also, the walk-up ticket counter at the airline's Tempe, AZ headquarters is on the chopping block.

Continue reading US Airways to slash 600 jobs, asks 400 flight attendants to take furlough

US Airways to slash 600 jobs, asks 400 flight attendants to take furlough originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 15 Jul 2009 10:30:00 EST. Leonard Bauer, independent stock analyst, told BloggingStocks Tuesday the potential United-US Airways union would benefit the sector in that it would be the second merger this year among major airlines in the United States, also known as the legacy carriers.

Shares of UAL Corp. (NYSE: UAUA), parent of United Airlines, are down 88 cents to $14.10, while US Airways (NYSE: LCC) are down 55 cents to $7.79 in Tuesday trading.

Sector right-sizing

"The deal would take another legacy carrier off the table, after the Delta-Northwest merger, and that can only help the sector from an earnings standpoint," Bauer said. "The United States airline sector leads the league in airline route redundancy and duplicate hubs. This second deal would further tighten the sector."

Continue reading United-US Airways merger would benefit sector, analyst says

United-US Airways merger would benefit sector, analyst says originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 06 May 2008 16:53:00 EST. (NASDAQ: UAUA) opened today at $43.89. So far today the stock has hit a low of $43.55 and a high of $44.67. UAUA is now trading at $44.35, up $0.80 (1.8%).

After hitting a one-year high of $51.57 two weeks ago, the stock has tumbled recently after a bad earnings release and downgrades in the sector. With crude oil slumping this morning and U.S. Airways Group (NYSE:LCC) raising its bid for Delta, airline stocks in general are rising a bit. The technicals for UAUA have been bullish but deteriorating recently and S&P gives the stock a 3 STAR hold rating.

For a bullish hedged play on this stock, I would consider a March bull-put credit spread below the $35 range.

Brent Archer is an analyst on the move at Investors Observer.

DISCLOSURE: Mr. Archer owns and/or controls diversified portfolios of long and short stock and option positions that may include holdings in companies he writes about.
United Airlines on the move ... originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 29 Jan 2007 11:35:00 EST.
