I don't know whether the Martian planet needs moms or not, but the Mouse certainly could have used a few more of them to bring their kids to theaters this past weekend.

Box Office Mojo says that the motion-capture-fueled Moms made $6.9 million at domestic screens during its debut outing. That's $6.9 million over three days. But wait, there's more: that's $6.9 million over three days for a movie produced by Robert Zemeckis. What the heck happened?

Continue reading Disney's 'Mars Needs Moms' Bombs on Opening Weekend

Disney's 'Mars Needs Moms' Bombs on Opening Weekend originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 15 Mar 2011 10:30:00 EST. Here are the highlights:

Tuesday: Weekly chain-store sales

Wednesday: Federal budget balance for January

Thursday: Wholesale trade data in December

Friday: Trade balance in December and the weekly inflation survey

However, three iconic companies -- Walt Disney (DIS), Coca-Cola (KO) and Hasbro (HAS) -- highlight this week's quarterly results. Here's a look at what analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are anticipating from these and others.

Continue reading Week in Preview: Coca-Cola, Disney and Hasbro Earnings

Week in Preview: Coca-Cola, Disney and Hasbro Earnings originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sun, 06 Feb 2011 12:30:00 EST.
I am not as interested in the earnings results as I am in the news that my colleague Steven Mallas touched on in the first paragraph, the earnings were released earlier than expected. The company was supposed to report the earnings after the closing bell sounded, but the results were leaked nearly 30 minutes ahead of the final bell.

Continue reading What's Behind the Leak of Disney's Earnings Report?

What's Behind the Leak of Disney's Earnings Report? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 10:50:00 EST. (AAPL). The ever increasing pile of cash at Apple increases the temptation to do something, but what?

Steve Jobs is reticent to start paying a dividend primarily for symbolic reasons. To give Apple's cash stash some perspective, the cash in of itself, without the actual company would represent the 45th largest company in the United States, right behind, Boeing Co. (BA) at $50.27 billion and ahead of Home Depot (HD) at $48.19 billion. It is even conceivable that the cash exceeds Boeing's capitalization, since six weeks have passed since the quarter ended.
Continue reading Chasing Value: Apple's Holding $48 Billion -- For What?

Chasing Value: Apple's Holding $48 Billion -- For What? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 09 Aug 2010 15:30:00 EST. We'll see Monday how Wall Street rewards Walt Disney Company's (DIS) shares, but this weekend's box-office receipts indicate that moviegoers very much care about the continuing adventures of Buzz, Woody, and the rest of the gang. Fans were waiting anxiously for the latest installment of the Tom-Hanks-led franchise, which hit theaters initially in 1995 (part 2 was released in 1999).

The film was a strong number-one at the box office this weekend (the 11th Pixar title to nab the top spot) and secured $109 million in North American ticket sales. Analysts are now targeting a domestic gross of more than $400 million. This was Pixar's best opening ever (even when adjusting for inflation).

Continue reading 'Toy Story' Franchise Is Alive and Well

'Toy Story' Franchise Is Alive and Well originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 21 Jun 2010 09:00:00 EST.
Taking a closer look at the day's put volume, the June 32 strike was most active. This front-month put saw 5,858 contracts change hands on Thursday, with the majority trading at the ask price -- confirming they were purchased.
Analysts are looking for Coinstar Inc. (CSTR), which distributes coin-counting, DVD-rental, and other self-service kiosks, to report that its fourth-quarter earnings more than doubled from a year ago to $0.32 per share. Revenue for the three months that ended in December is expected to have jumped 26.1% to $329.2 million. The analysts' forecast for the full year calls for earnings of $0.94 per share (+46.8%) on $1.2 billion in revenue (+25.9%). Coinstar has beat earnings estimates in the past three quarters, by as much as six cents per share.

Continue reading The Week in Preview: High Hopes for Coinstar, Agilent, Chipotle, Baidu, Hasbro

The Week in Preview: High Hopes for Coinstar, Agilent, Chipotle, Baidu, Hasbro originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sun, 07 Feb 2010 12:30:00 EST. That wonderful destination where I can re-acquaint myself with my favorite Justin-Timberlake-on-SNL moments, catch up on episodes of Greek, and search for those old Silver Spoons clips I remember so fondly. The two-year-old website is a joint venture between Walt Disney's (DIS) ABC Network, General Electric's (GE) NBC Universal division, and News Corp.'s (NWS) FOX Entertainment Group, and is partially funded by Providence Equity Partners.

One can only imagine who might be her guests.

In syndication across the country, Oprah's eponymous program is the top-rated U.S. daytime show (take that, Days of Our Lives!), with an average viewership of 7.1 million this year.

While not entirely unexpected, the news is likely a bit of a blow to CBS Corporation (CBS), as its CBS Television Distribution arm syndicates the program. Additionally, Walt Disney (DIS) might feel the sting of an Oprah departure as Disney-owned ABC is the primary network that airs the show. And will it impact O, Oprah's monthly magazine published by the Heart Corporation? To say nothing of all of the manic women in the audience who long for a chance at one of Oprah's favorite things.

The NYSE Financial Future Challenge, operated by the NYSE Foundation, By Kids for Kids, K12 Inc. and the United Investors Association, is in full swing, with five finalists just identified. To reach this level, the participants had to develop a new product, idea or process that would "excite, educate and motivate their peers" to become interested in the financial marketplace. The eventual winner lurks within this subset and will receive a $2,500 prize -- a great way to get that portfolio started. And, he or she will be feted at a closing bell ceremony at the NYSE (NYX) on January 11, 2010.

The finalists presented a variety of ideas which are sure to generate some buzz. Kelsey Foss, a 12-year-old from Mountainville, NY, proposed a new television show, "Stock Market Tycoon Idol," which would harness the popularity of reality TV while amping up the content. The program would involve the journeys of 10 kids as they seek to make money or lose it, with the possibility of becoming virtual millionaires along the way. The show would be set at a mock NYSE studio on Wall Street, and exports would be brought out to mentor the contestants. The reality TV reach would help engage a younger audience.

And consumer spending arises out of consumer confidence. Unfortunately, the signals along the road to economic recovery are mixed, what with the rising GDP growth and the dismal unemployment numbers. Its enough to leave investors scratching their heads. What barometers of consumer confidence will the coming week bring?

By focusing on music, videos and games, it hopes to recapture some of its luster. With the MySpace refugees mounting, it's time for some new blood to make some brilliant, future-changing decisions. This week, the company is holding a conference for its global ad sales team to explore ways to bring in traffic and beef up ad spending.

MySpace is poised to haul in $495 million in ad revenue this year, down 15% from last year's $585 million, according to research firm eMarketer. In August, MySpace attracted 64.2 million unique visitors from the United States, off 15% from August 2008, according to comScore, while Facebook pulled in 92.2 million unique U.S. visitors - up more than 100% year-over-year.

Disney is hoping that by completely revamping its retail stores that it will be able to lure in more customers, keep them longer, and encourage more sales.
So, 14 of the largest players in the space -- including programmers, advertisers, and ad buyers -- are shelling out some cash to see if there's a better way.
