Consumer confidence was higher and jobless claims were lower and the dollar was trying to show some strength. Still, housing data was mixed and inflation was picking up in the Philadelphia Fed report this morning. The biggest issue today is that many of these stocks were just up too much ahead of earnings. Despite the caution, the DJIA and S&amp;P500 were close to and even above the red-line for part of the day. <br />

The company announced this morning that it is considering <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/article/wendysarbys-group-considering-arbys-sale/1526580/">selling the struggling Arby's chain</a> in order to focus more on the Wendy's hamburger chain. <br />
<p>
Both sides of the company's eateries, Wendy's and Arby's, have seen sales slump, but Arby's has had the most problems thanks mainly to sandwiches that can cost more than five bucks. With such a price tag , those sandwiches weren't selling wel in the current economic atmosphere.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/20/wendys-arbys-group-may-sell-arbys/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wendy's/Arby's Group May Sell Arby's</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/20/wendys-arbys-group-may-sell-arbys/">Wendy's/Arby's Group May Sell Arby's</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 20 Jan 2011 09:30:00 EST. Even more troubling, the restaurateur said it's not yet prepared to offer financial guidance for 2011.</p>
<p>For the recently concluded quarter, Wendy's swallowed a net loss of $900,000 -- which translates to a negligible per-share deficit -- down from its year-ago profit of $14.69 million, or 3 cents per share. Revenue for the period slipped 4.7% to $861.2 million. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters were anticipating a profit of 4 cents per share on $882.6 million in revenue.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/12/wendys-arbys-group-sinks-after-q3-loss/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wendy's/Arby's Group Sinks After Q3 Loss</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/12/wendys-arbys-group-sinks-after-q3-loss/">Wendy's/Arby's Group Sinks After Q3 Loss</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 12:30:00 EST. Brands (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/yum-brands-inc/yum/nys">YUM</a>), a restaurant entity whose multiple concepts compete with McDonald's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/mcdonald-s-corporation/mcd/nys">MCD</a>) and Wendy's/Arby's Group (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wendy-s-arby-s-group-inc/wen/nys">WEN</a>), gave shareholders some great news this week: their dividend is going up! According to the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/yum-brands-inc-announces-19percent-increase-in-quarterly-dividend-raises-annual-dividend-rate-to-1-00-per-share/rfid367073667/?channel=pf">press release</a>, the quarterly payment is now 19% higher, coming in at 25 cents per share.</p>
<p>Not bad at all. Looks like management is feeling good about future cash flows. As we all know, dividend increases can be indicative of fundamental fiscal strength. And I like it when a dividend is backed by a strong portfolio that is well-recognized by consumers. Establishments like KFC and Taco Bell are strong trademarks.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/18/yum-brands-increases-dividend/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Yum! <p>Burger King said <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Net%20Income">net income</a> fell to $49 million, or 36 cents a share, during its fiscal fourth quarter, compared to $58.9 million, or 44 cents a share, a year earlier.</p>
<p>It looks like Burger King's successful attempt to court young males with its brash commercials and willingness to indulge a less-than-healthy appetite has hurt the company during the <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Recession">recession</a> -- as this demographic has been disproportionately hit with job losses in construction and manufacturing.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/24/burger-king-lays-a-whopper-invest-in-the-big-mac/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Burger King Lays a Whopper ... The fast-food entity beat expectations. But, as far as I'm concerned, it wasn't any big deal. In fact, the market sort of agreed with me. By the end of the trading session, shares were off by a mere penny, settling out at a price of $4.14. Volume wasn't that interesting, either.</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/briefing/wen-tops-q2-expectations/rfid357263370/?channel=pf">Briefing.com</a>, net profit of 6 cents per share went beyond the estimate by a penny. I hope investors weren't paying attention to the bears who were in control of the fast-food giant's shares. To me, the stock seems to be in good shape, and in the kind of trading climate we're in, it could be a useful instrument for the cautious player.</p>
<p>I'm seeing a quote of around $70 go by on my screen. Not bad in the least, considering that the 52-week high is $71.84. It shows the kind of resilience the stock possesses. Indeed, considering how many equities have pulled back from their 52-week highs, you've got to enjoy this element of the story.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/23/mcdonalds-receives-bearish-reaction-to-latest-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>McDonald's Receives Bearish Reaction to Latest Earnings</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/23/mcdonalds-receives-bearish-reaction-to-latest-earnings/">McDonald's Receives Bearish Reaction to Latest Earnings</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 23 Jul 2010 17:30:00 EST. Brands (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/yum-brands-inc/yum/nys">YUM</a>). The company has some high-profile trademarks in its portfolio, and it competes vigorously with Burger King (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/burger-king-holdings-inc/bkc/nys">BKC</a>), McDonald's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/mcdonald-s-corporation/mcd/nys">MCD</a>), and Wendy's/Arby's Group (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wendy-s-arby-s-group-inc/wen/nys">WEN</a>). It's a competent player in its field. Sometimes, though, that just isn't enough. Tuesday, during the after-hours action, the stock was sold off, losing over 3% of its value.<br />
<br />
And this was after the owner of KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell beat earnings expectations in the second quarter. It's a funny thing, though: You can top estimates all you want, but if your guidance isn't so hot, your stock isn't guaranteed to respond in the positive direction.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/14/yum-brands-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Yum! It just doesn't seem as safe as stocks like Burger King (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/burger-king-holdings-inc/bkc/nys">BKC</a>), McDonald's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/mcdonald-s-corporation/mcd/nys">MCD</a>), or Yum! Brands (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/yum-brands-inc/yum/nys">YUM</a>). Of course, I'm certain I did nothing more than state the obvious. <br />
<br />
As a low-priced equity, Wendy's/Arby's Group always possesses the risk of volatility. Today, the shares are off by over 3% in afternoon trading; at the time of this writing, I saw a share price of $4.93. Hey, it's better than the day low of $4.86. The company had reported earnings results for the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/wendyand-x2019-s-arbyand-x2019-s-group-reports-1st-quarter-2010-results/rfid328891884/?channel=pf">first quarter</a> Thursday morning. Do the numbers make the company look more or less attractive?</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/13/wendys-arbys-group-avoid-after-q1/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wendy's/Arby's Group: Avoid After Q1?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/13/wendys-arbys-group-avoid-after-q1/">Wendy's/Arby's Group: Avoid After Q1?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 13 May 2010 16:00:00 EST. <br />
Carhops on roller skates are making a comeback as Sonic (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/sonic-corp/sonc/nas">SONC</a>) forges ahead with plans to revive wheeled waitstaff at its drive in restaurants across the U.S. Sonic is planning a new TV ad campaign that will highlight this nostalgic feature of Sonic stores that many diners may have forgotten -- or that younger customers didn't even know existed -- in an effort to reconnect with consumers.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/13/back-on-fast-food-menus-roller-skates/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Back on Fast-Food Menus: Roller Skates</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/13/back-on-fast-food-menus-roller-skates/">Back on Fast-Food Menus: Roller Skates</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 13 Apr 2010 18:00:00 EST. The restaurant is adding more lower-priced items to its menu including a small roast beef sandwich, curly fries and a "jamocha" shake -- and operator Wendy's/Arby's Group (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wendy-s-arby-s-group-inc/wen/nys">WEN</a>) is backing them with an expensive new advertising campaign. <br />
<br />
It's part of a big push by the higher priced fast-food joint to woo back cost-conscious customers who fled the pricier restaurant for cheaper rivals during the recession. Since Arby's ownership group Triarc bought the Wendy's name in 2008, it has seen its Arby's stores stuck in a steady downward spiral -- sped up by the recession.<br />
<br />
But will this latest gambit help, or is Arby's a dying chain?<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/13/can-value-menu-turn-around-arbys/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Can Value Menu Turn Around Arby's?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/13/can-value-menu-turn-around-arbys/">Can Value Menu Turn Around Arby's?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 13 Apr 2010 11:30:00 EST. <li>JPMorgan upgraded TiVo (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/tivo-inc/tivo/nas">TIVO</a>) to overweight from neutral as it believes Thursday's appeal win against DISH Network could lead to revenue upside. The firm raised its target price for shares to $23 from $15.</li>
    <li>Collins Stewart upgraded DISH Network (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/dish-network-corporation/dish/nas">DISH</a>) to buy from hold on valuation, as it believes much of the impact from the negative appeals ruling is priced into the stock. It's not what I would call a quality name. If you want to play the fast-food sector, you'd be better off with McDonald's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/mcdonald-s-corporation/mcd/nys">MCD</a>) or Yum! Brands (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/yum-brands-inc/yum/nys">YUM</a>).</p>
<p>Burger King (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/burger-king-holdings-inc/bkc/nys">BKC</a>), although not my favorite member of the list, might also be a more attractive selection than Wendy's/Arby's Group. I don't mean to be down on the fast-food entity, but it just isn't in the same league as those other investment ideas. Plus, a look at the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/wendyand-x2019-s-arbyand-x2019-s-group-reports-4th-quarter-and-full-year-2009-results/rfid305512874/?channel=pf">fourth-quarter report</a> shows that management has quite a bit of work to do.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/05/wendys-arbys-group-q4-comps-dont-inspire/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wendy's/Arby's Group: Q4 Comps Don't Inspire</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/05/wendys-arbys-group-q4-comps-dont-inspire/">Wendy's/Arby's Group: Q4 Comps Don't Inspire</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 05 Mar 2010 10:00:00 EST. This report is a compilation of anecdotal information on current economic conditions from each of the 12 Federal Reserve Bank districts, and it is released eight times a year. The data comes from interviews with business contacts, economists, market experts, and other sources. The previous report, released in January, showed <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/13/feds-beige-book-cites-some-improvement-in-economic-conditions/">some improvement</a> in most districts and growth in consumer spending over the holiday period, though unemployment remained high. The December report showed <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/02/feds-beige-book-reports-a-modest-improvement-in-the-economy/">modest improvement</a> in eight of the districts.</p>
<p>Retailers were in the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/category/earnings-reports/">earnings spotlight</a> last week and for the most part made <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/23/retail-earnings-roundup-bks-hd-m-shld-tgt/">a strong showing</a> of it. Even as the earnings season winds down, some more retailers are scheduled to release quarterly results this week.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/28/the-week-in-preview-feds-beige-book-more-retail-earnings-can/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Week in Preview: Fed's Beige Book, More Retail Earnings and Canadian Banks</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/28/the-week-in-preview-feds-beige-book-more-retail-earnings-can/">The Week in Preview: Fed's Beige Book, More Retail Earnings and Canadian Banks</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 28 Feb 2010 12:00:00 EST.
