Week in Preview: Walmart, Home Depot and More Retail Earnings
Barnes & Noble, the Gap, RadioShack, and Sears -- that may sound like the lineup at the local mall, but in fact they are just a few of the retailers scheduled to step into the earnings spotlight this week. Following last week's disappointing January retail sales numbers from the Commerce Department but strong fourth-quarter reports from Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) and Nordstrom (JWN), the coming week will offer plenty more data on the sector for investors to mull over.
Walmart
Bentonville-based Walmart (WMT) offered free holiday shipping, closed its Moscow office and named a chief merchandising officer during its fourth quarter. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters forecast earnings for that period to come to $1.31 per share, up from $1.17 in the same quarter of last year. The world's largest retailer also is expected to post revenues of $117.7 billion for the three months that ended in January. That's 3.5% more than a year earlier.

Closing Bell: The Burst of the Pessimism Bubble (AA, ITT, JPM, LULU, NVDA, ZLC)
A slight economic upgrade from the Federal Reserve met higher commodity and higher equity prices today. The reality is that most equity markets were up around the globe today as investors are getting more of an appetite for risk. Even a Freddie Mac outlook for 2011 with higher interest rates and a 'narrower' budget deficit of $80 billion in December failed to temper optimism. Here are the unofficial closing bell levels:
Dow Jones 11,755.44 +83.56 (0.72%)
S&P 500 1,285.96 +11.48 (0.90%)
Nasdaq 2,737.33 +20.50 (0.75%)

2008 Trades Gone Bad #1: Going long the specialty retailers
If you made a bet on the specialty retailers leading up to the first $600 taxpayer rebate stimulus package, you got hammered.
Talk about a government plan backfiring big time.
That $300 billion in checks that fell out of the sky from government helicopters back in the March to May timeframe didn't find its way to the malls at all.
Instead, people paid down credit card debt, and tuition, medical and other bills, leaving little for spending on non-essentials.
The result was a litany of store closings nationwide, with several old-line, brand-name retailers going out of business.
It's game over for names like Circuit City (OTC: CCTYQ), Cache (NASDAQ: CACH), Talbots (NYSE: TLB), J. Jill, Wickes Furniture, Levitz, Bombay, Linens 'n Things, Movie Gallery, Wilson Leather, KB Toys and The Sharper Image.
Traders that leveraged into darling names, like hedge fund idol Eddie Lampert's Sears Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ: SHLD), got smoked. Shares of SHLD were trading at $105 when the checks when out. Today the stock is around $40.
Even Costco (NASDAQ: COST) -- the obvious slam dunk, aside from Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) -- got slammed, falling from $75 to $45 following the so-called stimulus package.
